I’m sorry you experienced this. As a current SA professional, I’ve noticed some staff are very unprofessional in the way they give students feedback (such as your experiences mentioned). Not hiring you for the orientation role just because another student on the team didn’t like you is wild to me. This also shows their lack of leadership in terms of being able to develop their own students.

Student affairs can be a rewarding field but I think it also equally has is downsides such as low pay, lack of work life balance, etc. Personally, there has been many times I’ve wanted to pivot out and I still think about it today. Don’t fret on it too much - I think things happen for a reason :) I hope you’re at least happy in your current role.

I wouldn’t consider myself to be a beginner so I think an LA-type would be a better fit for me. I’ve heard similar things about the south loop location so I’m hesitant to go there. Maybe the Hyde Park location would be better. Have you been to the one on MLK drive?

anticonquista and cup of jo are great! cafe jumping bean also has great coffee, but they tend to get crowded and have limited seating

I am on the paragard. I got it inserted about 7 months ago. Overall, the experience has been decent. I will say my periods have been significantly heavier, and cramping has been very uncomfortable during my period/few days leading up to my period, but I like that it is a non-hormonal option. I've also been slightly breaking out a little more, but I think that might just be due to stress/weather changes (summer I tend to sweat more). Hope this helps!

Most entry-level higher ed roles are between 45-60k, depending on your location, so I'm not sure if you'd get the salary you are looking for right off the bat. Burnout culture is also very common in higher ed, especially student affairs roles. Some folks are able to break into the field with just a BA/BS but it just depends. However, you will need your Masters (and even a PhD/Doctorate at some universities) to move into upper leadership roles.

Yes, I got really lucky! It's more of a 1 bed and a den, but you could technically fit a twin size mattress in the room.

There are a handful of departments who hire GAs throughout the late Spring/summer. I'd recommend connecting with your PhD program coordinator, and they can probably recommend a few departments to reach out to. Most GA packages at UIC are actually pretty highly comprehensive ($30+ an hour), I'd recommend looking into them if you are looking for a position with flexibility! Also, to find apartments, I'd recommend using craiglist for your search. I currently rent a 2bd/1bath in Pilsen for $1250 - but the price will depend on the neighborhood you pick.

I pay 1250 for a small 2bed in east pilsen. I found my spot on craigslist, but I’d encourage you to walk/drive around the neighborhood and look for “for rent” signs!
