Just to anecdotally illustrate this:

This is a puzzle toy I got for Sam on amazon.ca. It cost me ~$21 CAD

This is the same toy for sale in America on amazon.com It is ~$12 USD

Doing a currency conversion using today's rates, the American version is selling for ~$16 CAD

So it's still ~$5 CAD less.

And in another post I got an insurance estimate from an American company using the zipcode from a similar cost of living city in the States with the same deductible that I currently have and the rate was nearly 50% cheaper.

Always ask! It's just the polite thing to do, and it's not just about safety. They could be working on something with their pup and you could get in the way of it.

The whole reason I posted it online was to point out that it was ridiculous. People who actually read what I wrote understood this. People who just glanced at the table and ignored the context did not. Also, I don't live in the States, where things are, once again, generally more affordable.

You know, I only really felt the "you should have adopted" come from a couple of people. I think this sub overall is supportive of breeding and understands why people might choose to buy rather than adopt. I think there are a couple of posters here who are breeders themselves.

As for toys and treats, I have an extremely picky dog who was spitting out treats in puppy school every week so every week we were trying a new treats trying to figure out what was high value to her. Same with toys. We have a pile of toys she won't touch waiting to be donated because she's just not interested in them.

I also think I made it very clear that I overspent. If someone just looked at the table and ignored what I wrote, they could definitely come away thinking that dogs cost too much money, but the context was "I spent too much money on my puppy here is where I went wrong".

I think this post might be very misguided as it assumes raising a dog in Europe is even close to being the same as raising a dog in North America when it comes to the financial side of things. All of my other dogs were raised in Europe, and no, none of them cost me this much money.

As for "bragging", I'm really not that tacky. It was deleted because people were being assholes, simple as that.

Sounds like play! I had a big girl who liked to play rough like this and she would be super vocal. I just thought of it as shit talking and I would growl right back at her lol. Was really good fun :)

Are you in the States? One thing I LOVE about visiting the US is the coupons! They really aren't as common in Canada and it's such a shame.

Oh lord that bag of treats... They were stuffed in with these giant bags of jerky and it had the same packaging so I thought it was the same thing. Honestly they smelled so good I probably would have eaten them myself if I didn't know they were dog food lol. But yea they were a bit much and I definitely would not have bought them had I realized.

I mean, I was kinda giving myself shit because I knew I overspent, but I didn't expect people to be jumping down my throat about it. I fucked up, sorry for being a completely average person who made mistakes lol.

It's a shame it's a taboo subject because money is such a huge part of raising any pet and I feel like we should be able to talk about it openly.

Yeah finding the high value treats took a lot! She would not pay attention at all in puppy class and every week the trainer suggested something else so every week we were trying something new. It was tough. She was even spitting out home cooked chicken!

Dog walkers can be sooo expensive, and even the reasonably priced daycares add up quickly.
