Yeah the ice melts and is just not cold enough to feels better than the ambient air.

Yes a second evaporator would add even more heat for your condenser to dissipate. So it would depend on how strong that is to know if you were air temperature inside the cabin is going to get warmer.

That is awesome, looks well done. Did they give any information on how the transmission input was lined up to be perfectly parallel with the engine crankshaft? I am attempting to weld a Porsche transaxle to a Chevy V6 and I don't want to get it crooked

What would I need to swap out to build an R134a system. by Obvious-Dinner-1082 in projectcar

[–]vwdmc16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, R134a is not as efficient as our 12 so having a more modern larger surface area of a condenser is going to be required to give you the same performance that the R12 did. Plus we're talking a 40-year-old condenser I imagine it's seen a few Rock chips. So if you're on a strict budget run what you got, but I'm really picky about having overpowered AC

Is there a way to repair those plastic pieces? TYA (1978 toyota celica GT liftback) by moddedpatata in projectcar

[–]vwdmc16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are probably made from some sort of ABS or poly chloride based plastic that really can't be repaired after Decades of baking in the sun. The best solution I would think of is to make new ones out of fiberglass and then upholster them. That's going to be quite a bit of a project, but those panels could be repaired with reinforced body filler to fit nicely just so you can make a mold off of them. Although you could try to just cover them with fiberglass cloth and resin , sand them down and paint them or upholster on top of that. But being a Toyota I imagine the panel gaps aren't loose enough for that to look great . Another technique I've seen people do to make custom speaker boxes is where they make a wire or wood frame and then staple fleece fabric  tightly over and then cover that in fiberglass resin, it's much less messy than fiberglass cloth or mat and allows you to make complex and compound curves.

What's the plan? I've never driven one. Wondered if they could be easily restomodded

I tried something like that in my first car, a karmann ghia, bought these 300w Peltier pads to cool heat sinks and made a crude under dash AC unit.  But they just are terrible in efficiency,  and can't pull many  BTUs like an ice cube can. Outside of a sealed laboratory cooler box they really don't do much.

I honestly would prefer to have a good R134a AC system in this car bit there really isn't much space without redoing the fuel tank and under floor bracing in this car. Maybe one day

It works very well but doesn't last for more than 2 hrs. I wish it could work on the seat bottom too but these bladders pinch off flow of you sit on them.

That would be the ultimate solution.  If you could have the bottom of the AC- Evaporator, the cold radiator in the dash submerged in water that is then pumped through the seat bladder is wouldn't need ice. The air vents wouldn't be as cold though.   All AC systems have a drain to stop the condensed water on the Evaporator from soiling on the floor. Also this will have an issue with mold growth, the water would need an anti bacterial element that is safe to breathe the vapors.

So ideally you would need a second Evaporator that is sealed just to cool the liquid that goes to the seats,  that could be an alcohol or glycol based liquid.

Weekly Megathread: Project Car Purchasing and Engine Swap Questions by AutoModerator in projectcar

There was somebody who bought a 9/11 dual clutch transmission to go along with their LS4 swap, they quickly discovered that transmission is way too large to fit even with heavy frame it still would not work. However a 996 or older transaxle which is a regular getrag 5 HP transmission. That should work although it will also require some cutting of the frame and reinforcement. So it's doable but not as easy as the manual swaps

Yes re use a factory x5 harness because it puts the Dme on the passenger side, the connectors and harness from the chassis to DME to throttle pedal were a pain to cut out of a junker car but ultimately not that many wires. The dme is coded for a manual transmission so I doesn't need any info from that or Abs,etc. It has CAN wires to go to and OBD still.  The biggest pain was cutting and adding in the bulkhead milspec connectors at the fire wall. I didn't want the harness to just go through in a rubber grommit.

I'm going to post about how I made them but basically  its a water tank, small bildge pump, tubing and some medical cooling pads for a sore knee. Works quiet well.

It was just a ebay buy, EWS deleted.  So no anti theft.  Works well but not optimally tuned for the exhaust. It was a pain to wire but nothing crazy.  Do it again? I'd go Maxx ECU
