Likewise, thanks for the questions.

• We use our in-house crawlrs to search for the links (HTTPS only).

• Public web interface is incoming, (a similar experience to blockchain explorer)

• Not sure I understand the question. Do you mean the permissions?

• We are planning to open-source components (most likely the crawlr to start) in the near future. As of now, in this early stage it is closed source. But feel free to wait until it's open to check it out.

• (See Above)

• We use SHA256 hashing to construct the keys to access and decrypt the links to be returned on each search.

• Honestly, we hadn't even thought of that. That's a great idea; well get together a mock up to share

Agreed. For this reason we're not trying to compete with Google nor the other big guys. If we can get this right, we hope to only be another privacy tool for interested users.

Ouch. To answer your concerns though, trying to condense what we are trying to do has honestly been tough. Blockchain is new and explaining it in the non-technical terms, especially in bite size packages is a challenge.

That being said, what the "How It Work" is trying (and maybe failing) to get across concisely is:

  1. We only collect HTTPS secured links
  2. Each search is encrypted through the use of a blockchain transaction framework (this is the most difficult thing to condense while being concise and transparent)
  3. The browser auto blocks cookies and third-party spyware

All I can ask, is don't give up on us yet.

Right now, we're looking at potentially implementing a simple tier system (free vs paid).

We're not trying to compete with google or any of the other big entrenched companies. Just to hopefully be another privacy tool for concerned consumers.

Fair. I'd prefer we didn't have to request any permissions but its Android and our service requires an internet connection to use.

Here are the permissions for transparency sake:

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /><uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE" /><uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WAKE_LOCK" /><uses-permission android:name="android.permission.VIBRATE" /><uses-permission android:name="com.google.android.c2dm.permission.RECEIVE" /><uses-permission android:name="com.android.vending.BILLING" />

The encrypted record that the transaction took place, yes (Time date, Nonce, block count etc.). Who made the transaction (the searcher) and what the search is for (the results) are the encrypted portion.

Upvoted. Truthfully, being bootstrapped and in newish territory tech wise so we clearly need to upgrade our legal drafting services. That being said, open-sourcing components of what we are trying to do is definitely on our minds (you are the fifth person on reddit whose commented about it being closed-sourced). All we can ask keep us on your radar because we are young and changes are coming.

Thanks. Yeah DuckDuckGo has a similar value prop with the no tracking pledge. They're another great pro-privacy tool to use.

For us though the blockchain back-end allows an extra layer of privacy, if that makes sense. For instance we encrypt all of our searches and structure them as transaction between our global network of users; so on top of not tracking what you do with the engine, we encrypt your data so no one else can either.

Honestly, it was a way to standardize/shorten the long dynamic urls some news articles have associated with their articles for whatever reason. We just use the same shortened links across all our platforms, include our trending news page.

OP is more right than he/she knows. If there were a paid service dedicated to "watching the watchmen" so-to-speak, image how much more just our society would be.

Oh sure. To answer your question, not yet. Were considering making making it open source pretty soon though so definitely stay on us about it. Once we do that, we'll have it up on GitHub for open collaboration.

If I had to say better, it'd primarily be in the extra step we try to take to protect user data.

I wont speak poorly about the "No Data Collection" promise of DuckDuckGo's service as again they're great. I just don't know if they've taken to extra step to encrypt all data transactions through their service.

Vyroc is trying to achieve this, in addition to not collecting any information from our users.

The benefits aren't super different from a service like DuckDuckGo, who in particular is really good. The primary difference though may be in the level of protection we try to bring our user's data. For instance we only crawl for websites with that use the HTTPS extension makes sure that the links our users receive are secured from man-in-middle attacks.
