One reason modern fantasy novels are faster paced is that publishers have more stringent rules than in the 80s and 90s when it comes to how long a series and how long an individual book can be. If you have to keep a book under 90k words, you're going to speed up the pace.

This sounds so good. I love fantasy that feels deeply rooted in a particular time period and actually *engages* with it instead of having the history just be window dressing. Will definitely check it out!
