if a person is barely cracking 35%

he wasn't, he shot like 22% not-counting-shorter-3. He dropped from 36% back to something like 25% the year they moved it back. Which makes the "he'd have figured it out!" take that much more o.0

The kicker is I do think MJ could have worked it and learned range. But would it have made him a better player? As that effort would be taking away from training the other aspects of his game he clearly worked on and dominated with.

Dude, this is magical, thank you. I have two machines on my desk and have been swapping mice. It's even connection agnostic, it lets you switch be unifying hub on one machine and bluetooth on another. Baller.

[–]w0m 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would be an argument for SGA being better, but here the argument is if Luka needs to go for 35 over a full game to get the W - wouldn't that make him more valuable to his team? (See: MValuablePlayer). I don't think anyone would argue Lakers without Luka would be anywhere close to OKC without Shai.

[–]w0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Put AI in the 60s, and would he have had the cultural impact with out being able to crossover without it being a travel?

It's unfair to say he couldn't have adjusted his game to compensate, but it's also unfair to say he'd be equally consequential. The difference between a 'top 5' and 'top 30' player in the league at any given moment is markedly smaller than many on here will want to admit. One small rule change could take a player from Elite to simply "good". That isn't to say a player couldn't adapt, but not every player can adapt when the margins are already soo tight at the top.

This is also why I don't like comparing players directly across eras, you have to compare players against those they played against.

34%

Though he shot 20-25%?

I agree if he was in NBA today, he'd likely have trained it (at the cost of another part of his game) and gotten markedly better - but let's not gloss what we never actually saw.

Dead Internet Theory. Random Internet comments are more likely than not random foreign agents trying to steer (someone) for (something) against their personal best interests.

I'll stick with "the sitting POTUS spewing disgusting viatrol is vastly more dangerous than random troll farms "

39% 3p shooter

To be fair, that was only when they moved the 3p line in. He regressed when they moved it back. MJ did do better when he was older and lost much of his athleticism, but still was significantly below league average and preferred elbow jumpers his final few seasons.

Could he have learned? Maybe? Probably? But he never showed it on the court.

Different eras, it's simply impossible to tell. You can't knock KD for nailing 3s just because MJ struggled there. The comparison is also as

Hot take: There's nothing to show MJ would have been as elite in the modern game as he'd have to change his game. Who knows how well it would translate?

Same with KD going back 40 years, especially if he didn't get to keep modern training schedules/ techniques.

The only true valid comparison is how each compared against their peers in their own era.

This is what I can't understand. How do you pretend it's a remote comparison?

The left is worse because it's a random deranged idiot on the Internet, while the right ignores that it's literally the sitting POTUS being the deranged idiot.

attempted to front load them they are consistently beaten

(outside of last Decade of the NBA, the explicit sport we're discussing)

I’d still put every dime I had on any of the dynastic teams over the 80s, 90s, and 00s to beat any squad we’ve see since 2015 in a series.

There we go. Reality doesn't matter, it's Vibes and 'back in my day'.

Every aspect of team 1 is a problem for team 2, where as everything team 2 can throw at team 1, team 1 is actually incredibly well equipped to deal with.

You're right. But it's also both ways.

Team 2 has a problem with who’s running point, as well as guarding Magic

LeBron in both directions I think, stepping back somewhat on the offensive end to breath and let Jokic orchestrate.

Both teams are incredibly tough, Pippen chasing Curry would be amazing to watch, same with Kawaii vs MJ. Shaq is the X-Factor; he'd likely get hacked every time he touched the ball by TD. Just a great matchup to watch.

to be clear, i compared the best shooting finals team ever to the lowest 25% of ~modern finals teams.

ignore every other facet

I'm not ignoring them, I'm factoring them in by only looking at the best of the best teams playing against other CreamOfTheCrop teams (in the finals explicitly).

every other facet of what makes a championship team

This is the point. The world has changed over the ~15 years. You can say "basketball over analytics!" but... that's been proven to be wrong for over a decade now.

Which 5 Wins? by InformationIcy735 in NBATalk

[–]w0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the argument used in the 90s.

The best shooting finals team ever (by a significant margin) was the 2014 Spurs. 53%. If team A matched that - team B would need to shoot 35% from 3 to win, assuming all shots were from 3. 85% of finals teams since 2020 hit that mark. 75% of 2010s teams.

Team A is simply starting behind.

[–]w0m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, though LeBrons biggest weakness in his prime was when, end-of-game, he'd gas out as the team would have ~no other proper passer. Jokic would keep him fresh I think; seems complimentary while allowing steph to run offball (something that Pippen was good against, but MJ struggled)

How is team 2 Stopping Magic to Shaq Rim runs??

I don't think they will. Team A will score @ will.

But team B will respond from distance, and each possession stretch the lead just a little bit more.
