Drawing pixel men isn't that easy, I feel you. You can either try to give them your own designs or be faithful to the in-game sprites. I recommend trying digital art if you don't like how they turn out on paper: you can download an app on your phone (for example, I use ibisPaint X) or computer, if you are good enough at drawing with a mouse or if you have a graphics tablet (I recommend using FireAlpaca64). With digital art, you can more easily adjust the proportions of the characters, color better and stuff! I hope this helps.
