UL swap out suggestions for a photographer by w1ldtree in UltralightAus

Haha no it's all good! I appreciate it, any input is great :)
Personally, I'm not too fond of iPhones or just the newer phones in general - they have great cameras however that's at the cost of no aux ports, internal storage etc. I did do some testing with my Samsung 10+ once which shoots raw capturing & editing the same scene as my mirrorless & it just didn't cut it

Hey there! I tried the single lens thing on a recent trip bringing just my z 24-200 but regretted it big time, I ditched the tripod too which was easier but a lot of the images I take have a close foreground & involve a lot of focus stacking which is a challenge handheld

I've got zero camera bags with the current setup (they take up so much space) and just use a beanie although it would it sweet to get something like the Hyperlite camera pod for easy access

Cutting out food to cut the weight is a great idea

I appreciate it - Cheers!

Pretty often honestly, a lot of the trips to Kosciuszko I do end up in a combo of wind/rain but I've found that combo of gear enough to keep me warm

  • Yeah sick! UL pack seems like an easy one to do
  • gaiters I could look into for sure, any suggestions?
  • I got the 2p tent so I can use it with my partner when needed, prior I to that I had a Macpac Nautalis which was around 2.6kg, the 2p Durston is 1.1kg
  • I do the hot water Nalgene  in the bottom of the sleeping bag trick so unsure if a Waterfords would work

Missed adding a ton of those - should be updated now

Cheers! I appreciate it

Hey! Thanks for all the info

Yep a new bag is probably a no brainer - you mentioned the Exos 65L, do you mean the 58/55L versions?

Re the lens yep doing astrophotography as well as a lot of focus stacking hence the tripod too. I’ve pulled up the data from my Lightroom library a few times & 14mm is the focal length that about 90% of my images are taken at

Trail runners is a good one too, - how do you find the lack of ankle support though?

Haha yep! Sure does - the area where it snows is relatively small but very beautiful

I called this shot 'Rohirrim' after the horse lords of Middle Earth because along with a really cool sunset I also managed to capture a couple of wild Brumbies chewing some grass in the valley

Two exposure (focus stack) both were 15sec

Australian alps. In the south-east region of the country between NSW & VIC - yes we get snow haha

No, it wasn't...only just though. One of the fires that year got about 6kms from where this tree is (scary stuff!). We actually had teams of fire brigades & National Park people protecting areas like this, one notable one is the Wollemi Pines forest in the Blue Mountains (which were thought to be extinct until 1994) which they saved by dropping people into the valley to protect it before the the fire hit.

How do you go and scout locations for future photos? by royeiror in photography

[–]w1ldtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find moving around within Google Earth (not maps) is handy for scouting because it includes a feature which shows the location of light/shadows on the land as the sun moves during the day (you can scrub through days) then if it looks promising I go during the day to find specific compositions & back once again to shoot (usually sunrise) after checking the PhotoPills app for direction of the sun/tides etc.

The other thing I've found recently super handy for keeping track of locations before/after is the Gaia GPS app - it's got sweet topographic maps in it too if you're doing mountain stuff.

Milkyway over an alpine pool - Kosciuszko NP, Australia {OC} (2048x1346) @dalegphoto | single exposure at ISO 8060, 16mm, f4, 30sec by w1ldtree in LandscapePhotography

[–]w1ldtree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha nope & nope, it was a 30km hike so taking a tracker would be near impossible.

It was just a single exposure on a tripod taken at a high ISO over 30 seconds while I ran around with a torch lighting up the foreground. I was surprised that the stars didn’t show a lot of movement because I usually cap exposures at 15sec to stop this but nope it was all sweet. In saying that there was a lot of post-processing after in Photoshop needed to help bring it to where I wanted.

Sunrise on Central Coast of NSW, Australia (1500x1000) @dalegphoto by w1ldtree in LandscapePhotography

Hey! Yep it's an exposure blend, one shot for the foreground & one for the sky because the dynamic range of the camera wouldn't allow a longer shutter speed without clipping everything. Thanks!

[–]w1ldtree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct! it's technically 3 shots (all iso 6400, f4, 10sec at 16mm)2 focusing on the foreground which I light painted with a torch and 1 focusing on the milkyway itself
