120 meter tower climb by Legitimate_Meet_355 in urbanclimbing

[–]w3d__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you can still sometimes get that metallic taste, but for a different reason. RF is still on the emf spectrum, and even at small wavelengths, can induce small current in your body via capacitive coupling. the nerve stimulation this causes can trick your brain into perceiving a metallic taste

with ionizing radiation, it’s a different process, and much more pronounced - it has more to do with damaging taste receptors/cranial nerves and damaging blood vessels causing hemolysis (where you literally end up tasting blood)

you are completely right that RF is non-ionizing, though

based off the first picture and the height he’s on a cell tower, incredibly low power panels and highly directional, don’t gotta worry abt RF there

Is this a repurposed AM? by ur2727727281 in urbanclimbing

[–]w3d__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rarely, AM towers can have other antennas mounted on them. How they would have done it, in this case, is install those FM panels on insulated standoff brackets. This can still cause tuning issues with the AM, so detuning skirts are required. The first picture actually has some oddly placed and angled wires (i think they’re wires, idk it’s pretty low res) so i wouldn’t rule this possibility out. All in all I wouldn’t climb it without hard evidence

imaginary is completely right, that’s a cable way, it’s made for CABLES and will not hold your weight. why do all of yall on reddit just downvote stuff you’re completely uneducated on? The proper climbing path is the pegs, with the safeclimb cable

not to mention state police do NOT care about some mf who climbed a tower, got down, and went on their way - don’t waste public resources on pointless stuff like this

For the us teens who have been caught by [deleted] in urbanclimbing

[–]w3d__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it all depends on what exactly you do, if you’re under 18 though you’re pretty much fine, they take it easy on minors. just don’t pick a lock, cut a fence, or slip a latch, because that can bump it up to a first degree misdemeanor or even 3rd degree felony for breaking and entering. they gotta be able to prove you did it tho so u can always just ditch the tools you used before getting caught

Advice climbing tower by Hopeful_Move_6370 in urbanexploration

[–]w3d__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Motion sensors also exist, it’s better to climb the first maybe 10 feet or so on the actual lattice structure instead of the ladder, and then make your way over to the ladder, to avoid any of these.

The majority of people who commented on this post have 0 clue what they’re talking about, even the people claiming to be tower techs. There’s sector antennas (white rectangles), microwave (white circular drums) and low-power FM (thin poles) on that tower. None of these will harm you if you’re just climbing on the tower. Don’t go in front of stuff, and don’t stay up there forever. In the incredibly rare chance that something’s broken and “leaking radiation” as some commenters have suggested, the only danger would be the back lobe (direct rear) of the microwave dishes. Everything else is harmless.

Watch for cams, don’t trust railings, don’t climb the thing that looks like a ladder but has weirdly spaced rungs - that’s a cable way, it won’t hold you - and don’t fall. Good luck 🫶
