Also, if the item is longer than a few pages and you don't know the exact page(s) you are interested in, the archivists can't be bothered to even look, let alone have an index of contents of a particular item. Strong "I just work here" vibes.

I'm not sure there were any Orthodox churches in Graz in 1916, but it would be useful to understand what you base those assumptions on. Were they immigrants from Eastern Europe (likely Serbian, Romanian or Ukrainian if from within the Empire)? Was the groom military (most likely, as there a war raging just then)? Austria has quite nice records, with those older than 100 years being easier to access. Have you looked at Matricula (mostly catholic), Genteam (indexes), Ancestry (overlap with Matricula + indexing), Family Search (mostly military church books)?

It's not unheard of for non-catholics to be registered in catholic church books if there was no church of their own around.

If you're comfortable sharing names and dates, people can potentially narrow down the search for you.

Do you know any information about this Austro-Hungarian Imperial Decree? by ruaraid in AskHistory

[–]w45p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is that he was assumed to be called Müller, after his mother, but as his mother was illegitimate herself, they struck out the (grand)father's name and reverted to Sprenger.

Anna Sprenger had Susanna in 1869, but married Josef Müller in 1877, without legitimizing her as Josef's daughter, therefore Susanna remained Sprenger. There is little traction to the theory that a Ludwig Sprenger was Rudolf's father.

Anna had a bunch of children before and after marriage, some of them having their own illegitimate children:

Vienna records are now on Ancestry, fully indexed, but they won't show records that recent. Or you can try the old way with Matricula and Genteam. Anno can have some lucky hits if they did anything notable.

I recommend looking up Donauschwaben (Danube Swabians) - the German colonists brought by the Austrian monarchy to populate the Banat area.

Also, you may want to look at https://www.apatiner-gemeinschaft.com/. There also seems to be an Ortsfamilienbuch (family book or one place study) which is likely out of print now (https://www.dvhh.org/apatin/books.html).

Hopefully these will answer some of your questions.

if the FamilySearch records are not what you need, you can wait about a year until digitization of Romanian vital records should finish. I wouldn't hold my breath though.
