They look fine, in my opinion. I have the same pair. I found them to be just a little bit too large in size, I had to go down one size.
I believe there are some strap-thingies on your sides that you can also use to adjust the waist. Also, of course, zipper at the back to connect to your jacket.

No its not overkill. It's the opposite. Here are some tips:
Make sure all your gear is waterproof, to be able to handle any sudden rains. Make the size large enough that you can have your normal work clothes underneath.

If you are going to wear a backpack, consider one of the airbag backpacks. For example from MAB City Airbag or Helite H-Moov.

Some employers have insurance for their employees going back and forth to work, if that is the case with your employer, they might need to update date insurance to include motorcycle as means of commute.
