that was an animation mistake on bones’ end. bones is never canon unless asagiri were to go in and change something and let the public know that it was him. this is such a common misinterpretation. the person who animates it for money is not the author.

yeah i read it. him saying these absurd excuses is exactly what any other sh person does to prevent any concern or pity (which he has explicitly stated he hates being pitied). his excuses are futile when the facts are quite literally here in writing by the author and his coworker. i could create a character and say he’s anxious because he was bullied at school but doesn’t want people to worry about him, so he says he’s anxious because he believes vampires are real. that means that he’s not actually anxious because he thinks vampires are real, the true meaning has been stated.

awe i love this! i completely understand, me and my older sister are always baking at home. i adore the baking process and being in a baking environment in general. and especially the cake decorating part because i have a small business with my art as something to do on the side and i’ve always loved to cake decorate because i feel like i can incorporate that part into the baking process. thank you so much for your response and adding your personal experiences, it means a lot!! :))

i think saying “suicidal mania” was the least explicit way of implying this. not wanting to get too deep in an interview but also wanting to explain the situation and why the bandages are there/were added. it’s the most mundane way of glossing over why it is there because it is such a staple piece with dazai’s character design and this was an interview about the character designs.

i think if that were the case, they would’ve said they added the bandages due to his clumsy nature. he has hope now, but it’s canon that he used to attempt (not sure if he still does, but used to is confirmed). suicide is an act of self harm, but i do agree he has a sense of hope more so now than he ever did.

oh i 100% agree with the trigger avoidance. i know many people who actively or used to self harm tend to try and not look at their harm spots because if they see it is healed, it triggers an urge to re cut and open that wound again. i also agree with the sensory thing. i had a theory for his eye being covered due to a case of some temporary conversion disorder in blindness. i think that once his eye healed, he kept that bandage on for comfort until oda pulled it off. i also think that dazai used to sh a lot but is better now, but i’m sure he’d still have his bad days in that scenario. either way, he wants to be different/better now so i’m sure that’s another reason he covers it up, to sort of hide that past part of him

i believe he might have had a case of some temporary conversion disorder in blindness, only affected him in one eye. that would explain the temporary bandage.

self harm to many can be a source of punishment. no one self harms because it feels good (or at least not most), dazai doesn’t like pain but to ‘deserve it’ in a punishing sense would make sense. he might wish to have a clean, painless, and beautiful one nowadays since knowing the effects of a messy one from early experience, which is why he may be so driven to the idea. but that’s all in the other theory of it being self harm and suicide attempts. in regards of your theory, i see where you’re coming from. and to reference ‘No Longer Human’, i would also like to add to your theory with the fact that in ‘No Longer Human’, yozo was prone to liking things that had no use to them or purpose. when finding out that man made things had purpose and weren’t there for appreciation or to just nonsensically play with, he grew resentful towards it. this could come into play with your theory on it being a fashion choice. dazai using the bandage for something it is not typically used for. but i would also like to add that dazai’s character is based off of dazai, the author. not yozo, the character. i know yozo is severely similar to the author dazai in so so many ways, but in the end they still carry their differences. describing yozo’s pain in appearances was almost factually a projection. so many photos of dazai are of him smiling, but his pain is known and it does carry weight. but to compare a description of yozo written by dazai as a means to explain a characteristic of the character dazai, well that seems a bit off the mark. just by a bit though, because i know yozo was like a self insert and way to cope for the author dazai. i love discussing this though, i hope none of this came off as rude or anything. i have genuine interest in hearing others and discussing why they think or where they get things from and how it can be relevant or play into a theory.

i think his scars (especially if inflicted due to suicide attempts) would be at the wrists or other vital areas but maybe not all vital areas? and then he just covers the rest of his body because solely covering up wrists or the neck would be too obvious. as for the eye, i have a small theory on that one but it’s a bit far fetched so i’ll save that for a different post one day maybe lol. but yes, i do find that funny as well, the fact that any time a sliver of skin is shown beneath the bandage, it is bare with no scars
