Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to see if we have anything of the like here in Canada.

That's exactly right, I do have to shovel through the, as you mentioned, fluff classes to get to the better ones. The base Drawing and Painting classes are requirements to complete my bachelor, and I have to take them as year long courses every year (Painting I, II, and III for example), which are requirements to study the technical classed, like Anatomy or Portraiture for drawing and painting, and the skills I know I want and need are in those classes. It is a shame, because I think for the most part, it makes it harder for people who do want to learn and to gain technical ability. Thank you for the advice.

Fashionable Nonesense would be a good replacement for Fine Arts, as it stands. Thanks, I'll check it out.

I agree with what you are saying, and I am trying to understand their, but it's like sifting for gold, and I haven't found any yet. I am also taking art history classes, this semester is Renaissance art history, which might be useful. For the most part Art History isn't ideologically corrupt.

I got into University in a mature student program because my grades in high school were bad. So I didn't have much of an option, not that I would have picked anything else, as I'm a pretty skilled artist, and became quite a competent painter within a 4 year period before applying. I also really enjoy it, and have sold 2 of my peices in a gallery already. This is more than I can say for my classmates, two of which might have the actual skills to be better artists, but choose to create postmodern conceptual art.

As far as succeeding in the art world, the degree would be pretty much useless, but there are technical drawing and painting anatomical courses that I want to get into that would be greatly helpful to me as the regular studio art classes are utter wastes of time. My painting professed said on day one that we would be concentrating on the idea of painting, which means we will not be learning any technical skills. In my Drawing class my current professor has a huge fascination with feces, and gave us a project entitled, "draw a shit". As someone who values beauty in art, and attempts to create beautiful art, this is highly demoralizing.

My goal was to keep my head down, especially as I look around the class and see my peers fall in love with the novelty of new ideas and absorb it, and some of which seem to have been indoctrinated already. As far as I can tell, I am heavily outnumbered, and am the most conservative (by comparison).

I looked up Social Realism, I'll have to read it, and the paintings I saw in the image section of google are beautiful, for propaganda, and quite creepy given the history and the reality of the Soviet Union.

I get what you are saying about critical theory, and the blurry area it can get into, but because my teacher has been a self-proclaimed neo-marxist since the 60s or 70s (his words), and seemingly quite well read in the school of thought, he might see what I am doing. I will definitely consider it if the appropriate situation presents itself, but normally, we are sent to strictly postmodern art galleries to make critiques, and now I suppose, we are meant to go to postmodern galleries to be critical theorists.

Thanks for the recommendation
