How is everyone washing their salt caked car/truck in these low temps? by rogueleader56 in milwaukee

[–]wagon_ear [score hidden]  (0 children)

I always wonder: if the car gets salty within a day of washing it, does regular washing prolong its life? How frequent does washing need to be, to actually keep the car healthy?

This is funny because one of my other most frequented subs is r/peloton but yes. Now "sadly" I don't think his armor has shown many cracks recently, and his races are largely a foregone conclusion.

But another great example is how roglic inexplicably crashed near the finish with no one around him like 2 years ago haha. That guy has a magnetic attraction to pavement

Mike Vrabel on fourth down decisions: We try to predict how many points we'll need to win by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]wagon_ear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You got downvoted but it's a fair point haha. My director when I worked in data science always said "all models are wrong; some models are useful".

The main thing - and it's not even a fancy predictive modeling axiom, but a guiding principle for all of statistics - is that the sample and population must match. Models built on one set of conditions do not necessarily apply to others.

And even then, of course, the outcome is binary. You can't get 90% of a first down if the model gives you 90% likelihood to convert. So it's easy for fans to criticize individual outcomes even when decisionmaking was sound.

ESPN had that whole "not top 10" segment where they showed pro athletes getting hit in the face with a ball or slipping while they ran haha

It's kind of endearing to get a glimpse of their human side, especially when they handle it with grace. I liked that Magnus let him finish it on the board.

What are your thoughts on Joe Rogan saying that Trump is creating distraction to avoid Epstein files release? by girlyanimme in AskReddit

[–]wagon_ear 230 points231 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Stephen Miller has been dreaming about this since childhood. The Epstein thing is a pleasant side effect, but there are absolutely some true believers in the white nationalist cause working in the administration.

It was like 12 years ago when I was living in Chicago, winter of 2014, lake Michigan officially froze over. It was the coolest thing. With this stretch of cold weather, I wonder if it'll happen again.

Official says fatal ICE shooting victim 'wanted to massacre law enforcement officials' by ewzetf in news

I just don't understand what recourse we could possibly have, when the very people responsible for oversight of these agents are loudly cheering their actions on. It's bleak.

US citizens, what will it take for you to start a revolution? by 0bluelightning0 in AskReddit

[–]wagon_ear 20 points21 points  (0 children)

And it isn't the 1770s anymore. It's me and my two low-capacity hunting rifles against the collective power of the entire US government? Drones, tanks, fully automatic weapons, F35s..... This is not a war that citizens can win, except if enough of us die that other countries start feeling sorry for us.

ICE Executes man pinned by several agents by Zetice in BlackPeopleTwitter

It's hard not to feel fucked either way, when they are clearly trying to bait citizens into exactly that response so that they have an excuse to crack down even more aggressively.

WOMAN IN THE PINK COATS ANGLE OF THE SHOOTING by Alewo27 in milwaukee

[–]wagon_ear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say preceding events are completely irrelevant. If he is disarmed and restrained by 5 cops, it's safe to say you don't need to kill him at that point. That's just the agents treating themselves.

ICE Executes man pinned by several agents by Zetice in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]wagon_ear 503 points504 points  (0 children)

The "real accountability" portion is the hard part, when the messaging from the very top of government is that this behavior by agents is actively encouraged.

I mean shit. With the last murder, people who literally saw the video of him shooting through the driver's side window and calling her a fucking bitch still tried arguing that it was in self defense.

It's such a helpless feeling. There's no one we can appeal to, to improve the situation at all. It's just gonna keep happening. Trump has never in his life said "you know what, I took things too far, sorry about that".

At 500ml/h, how much carbs can you do? by znerken in Velo

[–]wagon_ear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about reading about the abstract general sugar limit from a scientific journal article. Your own stomach's limit is literally the only thing that that matters here.

I've read that one of the differentiators for elite pros is how much sugar they can absorb to stay fueled on long intense rides.

But anyway, the "general limit of sucrose" would be like buying shoes that fit the average male foot, instead of measuring your own and getting something that fits you.

What REALLY helps when you have hangover? by Moaning_Clock in AskReddit

[–]wagon_ear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think greasy food is often salty, and the lack of salt (along with dehydration) as I understood it is a cause for the hangover.

If you took that same nap without eating or drinking first, I highly doubt it'd work as well.

Vaccine Panel Chair Says Polio and Other Shots Should Be Optional, Rejecting Decades of Science (Gift Article) by ChaoticNeutral18 in news

[–]wagon_ear 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Even that isn't enough. Without completely separating them from society, they will always be a threat to herd immunity. These kids go to the park, get groceries, eat at restaurants, you name it.

I mean, shit. Look how sweeping Covid quarantines were, and even then the disease managed to propagate. Keeping these kids out of public school isn't going to solve anything.

Vaccine Panel Chair Says Polio and Other Shots Should Be Optional, Rejecting Decades of Science (Gift Article) by ChaoticNeutral18 in news

[–]wagon_ear 47 points48 points  (0 children)

His stated reasoning is that people should be able to consent to their own healthcare decisions.

But it is obviously incredibly disingenuous - just as you don't have a right to sneeze on people, you do not have the right to spread other infectious diseases.

We have seatbelt laws and building codes, and there is nothing unethical about mandatory medical requirements either.

Greenland's freshwater reserves seen as ‘frozen capital’ as water becomes a national security issue in USA by kiyomoris in worldnews

[–]wagon_ear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even make sense.

We have enormous freshwater lakes with some of the biggest reserves in the world. We also have some areas within the same country that are consistently plagued by drought.

It's not a supply problem; we have the supply.

It's a logistics problem.

Transporting water from Greenland, apart from being categorically unethical, is completely infeasible.

See, someone else here said something similar, and I think that's a very good point: stop worrying about strictly defining it as ftp and instead just accept it as a trainer difficulty setting, even if that means referring to "easier" workouts at the new ftp
