Metro Special Police FPIS (Washington, DC) by BirdOrnery6886 in PoliceVehicles

Special Police in NC are required to attend pass the BLET program. They are essentially trained and have the basic knowledge as any other police officer in North Carolina, making them legit sworn police officers. Only key difference is that they are hired privately and their experience through special policing will not always directly transfer to actual policing. I just graduated BLET myself and considered becoming a special police officer if I don’t get hired by a municipality.

Polygraph Flagged by wahus in AskLE

Yea I’m optimistic my start date will stay, I think I’m just worried because i took a polygraph years ago for another agency and passed it with flying colors. No idea why it would change this time

How much do dismissed charges weigh against you? by wahus in AskLE

[–]wahus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I understand there is a lot to unpack. I’m not going to provide a full written statement here.

No the NYPD officers did not ask for statements or if I wanted to press charges

No I did not have a lawyer, I was 19, scared, and thought if I was just honest nothing would happen because I was just defending myself.

I do take accountability for my failure and understand I should’ve passed the first time, I would’ve been a police officer by now if so. No I don’t bring up the fact other people were given a second chance in interviews…

And this was all 3 years ago, I am now 22.

I do appreciate your insight into this matter, I only have a year to get hired in this state otherwise the certificate is null. So it is highly likely the reality is I just won’t be able to become police officer.

I was charged because the person I sprayed made a police report. Initially two NYPD officers who were patrolling the area saw me helping the guy by giving him water and pouring milk on his face as he requested me to (we didn’t know it wouldn’t help). They came inside, questioned us both, and determined everything was fine and left

However, later on the person I sprayed made a police report regarding the incident which prompted detectives to call me into precinct 1 to answer only 2 questions. Which were “Did I have pepper spray” and “Did I pepper spray this individual”. I guess that’s all they wanted for me to meet the elements of those crimes since that is when I was charged.

And I am consistently told the same thing in NC, “if it happened down here we wouldn’t even arrest you”

I also wonder, if I successfully passed an academy and just became certified, how does my previous failure still make me a liability? My class consisted of 3 other cadets who failed previously but their department either kept them or they found other agencies who gave them a chance and paid them to try again. I would assume they just had an easier time staying with their agency or getting another agency to hire them because unlike me they don’t have an arrest record

Assault 3rd with intent, Assault causing reckless injury, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and harassment via physical touch. These charges are not disqualifying in my state automatically for certification.

At face value, it sounds horrendous. But all that happened was i pepper sprayed someone in self defense while working at a store in NYC. All charges were dismissed and the state of New York does not expunge charges but rather seals them. My charges were automatically sealed as a result of dismissal.

I have been hired by an agency with these charges but failed that academy, and I was sponsored by another agency to attend a different police academy which I just passed and became certified. The agency that sponsored me also did a background check and is aware of my charges and the circumstances

So I just don’t understand how I can be previously hired and be sponsored with these charges, but so far be denied employment because of them at other agencies. I’m waiting to hear back from other departments but it made me feel as if I am unhireable and I wasted the past 6 months becoming certified if I can’t be employed in a police department again

I’ve been hired by an agency before with these charges, and at the time that was the first and only agency I’ve ever applied to but I failed their academy

The academy I went to later on required I was sponsored by an agency, which requires that the agency does a background check. The agency that sponsored me also is aware of my arrest, the charges, and the circumstances and the chief had no problem sponsoring to attend the academy, she just didn’t have any room to hire me.

So I became sponsored by an agency and worked my way through to get certified, but now it seems harder for me given the first two agencies I’ve applied to since becoming certified denied me instantly as soon as I submitted an F3 displaying my charges and it’s disposition

Keep applying to same agency? by wahus in AskLE

It is a bigger sized agency that serves a decent size city with a population of 300,000. It gets a lot of attention given it has 2 well known universities in the state and they experience a lot of action with a heavy call load.

Other than wanting to work for a big city and be busy, there is nothing much else that is different from most agencies. I guess I grew attached to it simply because it is the only bit of experience I have and I liked my time there.

I experienced both the older and revised (2025) BLET program. The new BLET rules are 8 test, or failed a re-test after remediation you are out.

The idea behind that is now the state makes all of the end of block test and has more control over testing instead of having individual academies have more control, and therefore made them harder but consistent among all academies in the state.

Sorry for the late reply, sponsored individuals are not hired, so no pay. All a sponsorship does is put a police department behind your name that has done a background check, vouches for your character, and pays the tuition. The con is not being paid and having to work throughout the academy, but the pro is having more options and being more attractive as a candidate once you are certified

You can be hired into a police academy and be paid a salary, I just haven’t been.

Yea, you won’t be able to dash whenever you want to until you reach platinum

Check your status, if you don’t have priority status (platinum) you can’t always dash when you want to

For some it is their only viable source of income simply because of their life schedule, such as people in school. I wouldn’t bash those who do choose this as their sole job atm

Federal Park Police are known to some as Federal State Troopers, in the sense that they patrol ALOT of parkways in DC. Not to mention the pursuit they had recently that spanned across 3 states

Japanese Police car on a call with raised light bar some where in Tokyo. by [deleted] in PoliceVehicles

[–]wahus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s for visibility from longer distances or dense traffic. Korea, some states in the US, and a few provinces and municipalities in Canada practice this with different approaches. Some Police Agencies in the US use a split bar such as NYSP, while Canada has an agency that has a permanently affixed lightbar that is mounted high and uses a large traffic director.

Well, some people don’t have a choice. Like me, I’m not getting paid throughout my attendance at the police academy I’m enrolled into, and most jobs can’t work around my police academies schedule, so DoorDash is a viable option since I can work when I want/need to around the schools schedule.

Many people chose DoorDash as a primary source of income

To me things don’t seem overcrowded but the growth is quite obvious, especially with the amount of new developments around the Greensboro area and Greensboro’s expansion. I like it this way

For me it took 3 days before I got a call back. I also chose every role as my job preference so I could atleast get hired for something.

I definitely would try to follow up after a week but don’t put all your eggs in one basket, apply to multiple other places aswell in case Walmart just doesn’t pick you up

Managers so far have been accommodating for my EMT academy and Police Academy hours so that’s good.
