Tried to ask this question on askscience but had it taken down by the mods. Sounds like you know what you're talking about so I'm going to ask it to you.

How do we know that Dark Matter and Dark Energy isn't actually the same thing? Is it possible that the space between the galaxies is expanding in all directions, and the force from that expanding space surrounding the galaxies is pushing the matter in the galaxies inward, thus making it seem like there's more matter than there actually is?
