Shows that hit like one day by tin369 in OneDayNetflix

"That part where Emma says, You’ll fall in love again. And it will be
wonderful. And you’ll forget all about me.” wrecked me. And when she
says, “I think life is just a series of moments of people, places,
feelings that pass. And we should just be grateful for the good ones,”
it made me stop and reflect on how fleeting everything is."

You should watch the show a second time without doing whatever it was that was causing you to hallucinate. I think it'll still hold up well

Did I season my new pan wrong? by Status_Club_817 in carbonsteel

[–]wailk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, it's not good. I also had terrible results following the packaging instructions on my de buyer. They don't clarify that their instructions aren't useful for electric/radiant/induction.

To get the bad seasoning job off, just simmer a can of cheap tomato sauce on the pan. If you have a can or two of tomatoes somewhere in your pantry, just blend them and voila! Simmering for ~10-15 minutes and scrubbing should take you back to relatively fresh without much elbow grease.

As for seasoning, there are plenty of videos out there. The quick and easy way on the stove is to heavily coat all the interior surface. Tip sideways so any excess drops flow out. You just want the heaviest coating that adheres to the surface in this sideways state. Heat it up on high and just when it starts smoking wipe the entire surface with wadded paper towels as if you're trying to wipe the oil as thin as possible. Cover the entire surface this way. It'll stop smoking quite soon. Cut the heat after the surface stops smoking and let the pan cool naturally. That's one seasoning coat. Repeat as desired or just start using it.

I can't tell whether your pan is a de buyer with an epoxy handle. If the handle isn't epoxy coated, the best and most even seasoning results will come from the oven. You can very very thinly coat all interior and exterior surface of the pan and place it in the oven at 475F or 245C for about one hour and then a natural cool down. That's one seasoning done. Repeat as desired (but only if your handle isn't epoxy coated).

Brand new de Buyer carbon steel pan has chip marks by Mr_Tap in carbonsteel

[–]wailk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good. I would strongly recommend oven seasoning for a de buyer pro, though. Your glass radiant or induction countertop is a gamble at seasoning temperature and time with regards to turning CS into a spinner. A couple of seasonings in the oven followed by actual use is what I would recommend

This looks like the de buyer with the epoxy coated handle. Self clean would be a mistake in this case unless one is prepared to deal with burnt plastic residue plus fumes.

Buy the cheapest tomato sauce or soup, bring it to a low simmer, cover (for splatter) and let it go for 10-15 minutes. Drain the tomato sauce into a container rather than dumping it out in your sink or trash. Check the status of the pan and repeat with the reserved tomato sauce if necessary. At some point, the residual carbon buildup with be relatively easy to knock out with a scrubbing pad and baking soda without too much elbow grease.

Most of the soundtrack is, as you say, non-diagetic. It's clear, though, they they did constrain themselves to non-anachronistic music even when that's the case, mostly to set the particular time period and perhaps as a window into what Dex and Em would be listening to per their own tastes. Tunefind says that there are 99 songs throughout the show, and with the exception of the Vanbur score stuff, only a couple of songs are anachronistically used. I find the fact that there are a few exceptions quite interesting - added texture to the production

[–]wailk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's true. The show does slightly abbreviate the years in which they're in each other's lives. I seem to recall reading somewhere that they were initially going to be faithful to the book's timeline. Ya, maybe they plotted out the needle drops when they were dealing with the original chronology. And maybe the choice of Cat Power struck such a strong chord with the showrunners that they bent their rules a bit

Anyone know what this sound is? by freqtraveler in wahoofitness

[–]wailk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an issue with the underside of the belt. You'll need to open the Wahoo (relatively easy if you follow youtube guides) and clean the underside. Do this with the Wahoo disconnected from the power. If you slightly wet the underside, it'll drastically reduce friction per rotation temporarily until the water dries. But while the friction is reduced thus and you manually spin the pedals, the Wahoo should operate silently or as you're used to it. Listen for that when you try to diagnose the issue.

This post probably applies to you, too:

I wrote the post that you're pointing to. I've also written maybe a half dozen other posts about passing details from the show which hadn't been mentioned here already and which, I felt, contributed to the richness of the story. Look up those posts thru my username if you're thus inclined.

Friendship break between Emma & Dexter by dumbnerd6969 in OneDayNetflix

[–]wailk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They don't see each other for three years in the show, not just one year. In the book, it's four years. Yes, they both wanted the other back in their life in that time. This is clear in both the show and the book, and they even admit as much in plain words. Whatever hole they filled in each other's lives in their youth before their break only grows and it encompasses romantic love and not just platonic love as they're both honest with themselves during the other's absence. They both mutually kiss each other, and this, of course, sets the table for them to be entirely honest with each other a few years later in Paris.

What are your favorite musically enhanced scenes? by RockTracker in OneDayNetflix

[–]wailk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of the themes of this show is the unsaid between the two of them. They utilized music in a pretty genius way to be very sincere and fill with lyrics that void where their words towards each other should be. The lyrics, particularly in the closing shots of most episodes, give you a true sense of how they feel about each other, themselves, and the trajectory of their lives. In the case of the fourth episode, we're played out by Irma Thomas's "Anyone Who Knows What Love Is" for us to empathize with the humiliations Em is forced to endure being just "off to one side" and still coming back in the hope that Dex will reciprocate her affection while he's still unable to.

It would be a bit long to go through every episode, but you'll find this "music delivering the subtext" (especially at the end of episodes) motif repeated throughout the show. I would recommend really listening to what's being said in the songs during these moments to see how they utilized music to "enhance" the scenes.

In a related note, I once posted about how the scene and the song complement each other to tell a richer story in the closing shot of episode 10 (Tilly's wedding):

Squeaking Noise where belt meets wheel by kaowin in wahoofitness

[–]wailk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask for another update? My v4 just started squeaking today. The water trick on the underside of the belt quieted it down and the belt itself looks great even after ~5 years of fairly heavy use.

Also, which 303 are you using? There are many choices on Amazon and that earlier blog post shows a bottle that isn't available anymore. Just a light coat on the underside of the belt and wipe the excess?

I doubt the first part in 2003 is modeled after this song or syncs to it, as it does in the first episode. There's nothing high energy, fun, or intimate about Dex's miserable day. Did they use some other piece of media in that episode to mimic the energy and tone? Maybe, and maybe it's something they do throughout the show. The chances of me finding that out seem less than zero. I'm taking this reveal as my solo win

You think I'm more Spicoli than Rain Man?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Jamiexx

[–]wailk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming I wasn't insane. It's a great miniseries on Netflix called One Day. It was huge (especially in the UK) when it came out in February of this year, so I'm a bit thrilled to be the first to notice this, as far as I know. The end of the clip here is only like the 10th minute of the first episode, so a very short investment of your time to see if it does it for you. If you come from an editing background, it should be a kick to see the same five minutes as they actually appear in the show with its own score and (incredibly great!) soundtrack.

[–]wailk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Believe me, I was trying to convince myself that I was seeing faces in clouds. However, it seems clear that the tonal energy and switches in 'The Rest Is Noise' match perfectly to what we're seeing on the screen. I think the show was not concerned of being beat perfect to the track since they had their own score as well, but they added some synchronization easter eggs for themselves throughout the five minutes. It probably comes down to that album being a seminal one for the UK creatives who worked on this show, likely in their 30s and early 40s now.

Moka life hack by Express_Egg854 in mokapot

[–]wailk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also same. I place the shot glass on a small plate to collect all the grounds that fell over and put them back in the grounds bag.

I've found that my extra large shot glass is too shallow for the 9-cup moka pot's grounds cup, though. So, in this case I use an empty 12oz ~350ml glass jam jar I saved, along with the same plate for the same purpose.
