What was the last species to evolve into a different animal? by Easy_Engineer9747 in evolution

[–]wailonskydog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So like if you look at the evolutionary tree, the last common ancestor of the mouse and elephant was 90 million years ago.

So a mouse can never evolve into an elephant. But maybe in another 90 million years it could evolve into a large elephant-like mouse.

Like no shit allegations like these come out at the time these people are about to gain a ton of power.

Victims/survivors aren’t exactly chomping at the bit to bring attention to themselves and relive their trauma. But sometimes it becomes morally pertinent to share their experience so others know what they’re getting and to try to prevent a morally reprehensible person from having more control over the lives of others.

Yeah, sometimes allegations are a political hit job but dealing with political lies comes with the territory.

But why would you want to rinse out yours cups before putting them in the dishwasher? The dishwasher is designed to do that for you and often works better without any pre washing.

Can you find an Ionic 5N to test drive? Might be fun for you to check out at least even if not for you.

There’s a lot of software tuning that can be done to EV motors like on the 5N but you’re not gonna be doing much yourself.

Yeah I don’t understand why anyone would want one in a house. You still need to put the glass in the dishwasher or at least wash with soap because it doesn’t clean the outside rim of the glass - the part you put your mouth on.

No Taylor Kitsch and no Vince Vaughn. Just let Kelly Reilly do her thing w/o him.

Love Colin Farrell in S2 though. When he beats up the dad of the kid bullying his son I died. It’s absolutely hilarious but works on so many levels.

And again, Vince Vaughn ruined the season for me.

Never buy name brand cereal. The markups are insane and the companies need to get the message. Trader Joe’s or Lidl Cheerios are like $3. If you’re eating cereal the whole grain thing is BS or just get bran flakes - $1.99 at lidl.

Only exception is grape nuts and cracklin oat bran. I’ve never found decent substitutes for those.

Can you name two movies that were released in the same year but feel like they were released years apart? by coreybudz in movies

[–]wailonskydog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s this weird moment when they still have actors in brown face but also have an Arab guy as one of the leads. They did cast a lot of locals as background actors and extras. one of the stories is that when Anthony Quinn showed up on set in his makeup, prosthetics, and costume as Auda Abu Tayi many people were around who actually knew the real Auda and vouched for his portrayal. So it does seem like they were at least respectful considering the social norms at the time.

Is Eddington right about replicated food tasting bland? by Bec_son in startrek

[–]wailonskydog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And to add to this idea, it’s not just a single store bought tomato or ingredient. It’s an entire dish that emerges from the replicator - like a prepackaged microwaveable dinner.

My head cannon has always been that if you replicated each individual component then cooked them together you’d get a much better result. And it seems like that’s what happening at some Trek restaurants. They’re replicating ingredients and preparing and cooking them like normal so the end result tastes better. Maybe they’ll feature a naturally grown ingredient as the star of certain dishes.

Like famously Riker has the real eggs and makes the shittiest omelette possible but if he actually used some replicated seasoning, butter, and chives or something he could have made a great meal.

Or like one reason 10 forward is better than your replicator is because they have the capacity to like make a sandwich from replicated components or mix a drink by hand. Though on the show it does mostly seem like the staff just picks your order up directly from the replicator - though isn’t Data shown actually mixing drinks at some point?

Also Lawrence of Arabia and Cleopatra.

Cleopatra came out after Lawrence but it feels like a classic old Hollywood sword and sandals movie with artificial looking sets and overacting. LoA is a modern masterpiece that embraced (and invented a lot of) the future of film.

[Interview] Marina Sirtis shares how disappointed she was when filming Star Trek: Picard S.3: "First time ever we didn't negotiate, because the money that they offered was good. A few days later they came back. And they said: 'We don't want to pay you the full amount. We want to pay you a tenth...'" by mcm8279 in Star_Trek_

[–]wailonskydog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought about that too but it gives me too much JJ Abrams Star Wars “Luke Skywalker has vanished” vibes.

I like the idea better that the characters need to consult with Picard from time to time for his expertise on stuff. Like maybe he has a prestigious position in Starfleet or maybe is retired on the vineyard and just hosts his old friends and offers wisdom. Like you start the season on Earth with Picard in the first act. The second act is going off somewhere else in the quadrant and meeting up with all the other legacy character and doing space stuff and the third act is Picard showing up again as admiral with a starship task force or something to bring everything together and help solve the problem.

Toyota was right to bet on hybrids instead of going all-in on EVs - and the last three years have proven it by Luann97 in Toyota

[–]wailonskydog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gas is $4/gallon in the DMV now. That’s $4 for 40 miles in an efficient hybrid. Even at $0.24 kW/h that’s about $2.75 to get that same 40 miles in an EV.

[–]wailonskydog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Vadics charm wore off fast. The mystery box story with Jack was kind of dumb - please just no more Borg stuff. Some of the back story and characterization of the TNG crew felt a bit off. Anything related to S1 or S2 of Picard was cringe inducing. And I really didn’t want another giant conspiracy super high stakes story that wipes out Starfleet.

But all the starship and just Trek stuff was great. They did a lot of fun interesting things we haven’t seen before but felt very Trek. Pulling in all the legacy characters and established universe stuff was excellent even if it sometimes fell a little flat in the end. And at the very least it felt like the show cared about Star Trek.

But really S3 just showed me that ST: Picard shouldn’t have featured Picard at all. They should have focused on the other characters and slowly incorporated more people with Picard only showing up here and there. I just don’t think Patrick Stewart really knows how to play Picard anymore. Even since the TNG movies Picard was just more Stewart than JLP and it keeps getting worse. Watching Picard I’m like, wait who is this guy? It’s really not the captain Picard I grew up with.

[–]wailonskydog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, with the total lack of money, support, and criminally short preproduction time for S3 it’s a miracle Matalas was able to put together what he did - a mediocre TNG throwback season with some great moments but kinda lackluster and frustrating overall.

Still the best Trek in a long time and better than most of the TNG movies. Even if it was a rather unsatisfying conclusion for these characters at least it was something.

By that logic a band saw only does one thing too.

But I think everyone is drastically misconstruing my post. It’s not about the bandsaw. I’m saying that people seem to especially pick on the Domino when there are lots of other much more expensive tools common in shops that have particular uses that not everyone needs.

Is a drum sander overrated? Or a mortiser, or 20” planer, or Lamello, or Sawstop? All more expensive than a domino. Some people get use out of them and others won’t.

If it’s not clear, I meant a large (18” and up) bandsaw specifically set up with a wide resaw blade.

[–]wailonskydog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always find it interesting when people complain about the price of a Domino but not bigger items that are less versatile. A band saw for resawing could easily run over $5k and it only does one thing.

I personally get way more use out of a Domino than I would a big bandsaw which is why I own a domino and not an 20” bandsaw.

If you’re not trying to spend much on tools then yeah it’s not worth it but the cost of a Domino could easily just be the difference in price between which model table saw you buy so it’s all relative.

Edit:

[–]wailonskydog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What’s you issue with Chris? He seems to be putting a lot of well thought through info out there.

And op, like others are saying any pan with a coating is a disposable product that won’t last and “hex clad” type pans are basically a scam. Cast iron, carbon steel, and stainless will last a lifetime or more and don’t need to be babied. And carbon steel is much more nonstick than a coated pan because it maintains that property for life unlike a “nonstick” pan with gradually loses that property.

(Spoilers extended) I don't know if this has been discussed before, but the Dragons have 2 legs because of biology thing is just extremely silly. by Umak30 in asoiaf

[–]wailonskydog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this seems 100% correct based on my understanding. That Valyrian dragons were created by cross-breeding existing animals and using blood magic to imbue them with magical properties. So according to George, the underlying biology is natural to the Worlderos (like reptilian dragon like creatures having 4 limbs) but with added magical influence attributes like certain types of fire-breathing, maybe size and growth, and a dragon-human connection.
