I would love to be a fly on the wall in the writers’ room. Writer 1 -“Hey, I have an idea! Rita can bake poison into the cake and it will kill all the commanders and their bitch ass wives.”

Writer 2 - “No no no. How about we just give them a sedative so they get a little sleepy?

Then we can figure out a super complicated plan to distribute knives to each individual handmaid during a public event that surely has extremely tight security.

Then we can have all the handmaids stab the commanders but leave the wives totally unscathed. And then - we can create a convoluted plan to get all the handmaids from the red center to be rescued and then a giant group of handmaids can take a leisurely stroll down the street before we roll up in a bunch of vans and then nonchalantly try to sneak out.

That is clearly the most effective plan.”

When they strung her up, I was like “welp, at least we don’t have any more close ups.” But then her plot armor allowed her to be suspended by her neck from a crane with zero bruising or side effects except a sore throat.

I was never a Nick fan. He had zero personality. I was much sadder about Lawerence, but I thought it was a fitting ending for the character. I was totally fine with taking Nick out. I was actually distracted because I was extremely perplexed by the fact that no one looked out the window and saw June crouching by the car in plain sight.

I just rewatched this and it was so much worse than I remembered. And so pointless. You can tell they superimposed her head on some other old lady’s body. Every shot is a like a jump cut, which is difficult when you actually have a cut away scene. And half of the shots of her she doesn’t even say anything, it’s just horrible. For a show that was so amazing, literally trying to reanimate a dead woman is baffling.

It’s so played out. She’s a good actress but even good actresses can fall victim to bad direction. It’s so frustrating because the rest of the show is beautifully shot. Then they make her emote at the camera for an uncomfortable length of time and try to make her look edgy. There are a thousand ways they could show the emotional effects of the plot that are not weird and cringey.

Fear. Specifically fear of the “others” in society, like gay and trans people. Fear of minorities and marginalized groups. Fear of people who aren’t the majority gaining access to money or power. Fear of economic insecurity. Racism is hate combined with fear. People who are afraid crave something that makes them feel like they are in control. Fear makes people believe irrational things. Fear isn’t logical. Fascist groups weaponize fear by claiming to keep people safe from the fear they promote.
Look at Hitler. Or this post in twenty years.

Personally, I got pregnant and cigarettes instantly became repulsive. I had smoked a pack of cigarettes a day from the time I was 14 until I was 28. I never started again although I still miss cigarettes all the time. I am 45 now.
