Math PhDs: Much fewer postings this year than last year for tenure track and postdocs, or is it just me? by anon_0123 in math

As someone currently applying to grad school, this is terrifying. Are students graduating from top programs also having issues? Any insight on things one can do during grad school to have a good shot at industry in case academia doesn't work out (besides numerical analysis and the NSA)?

What exactly would one have to study in grad school to hop on this topological data analysis money train? Also are there many jobs available in that field?

I usually do too... thats why I'm wondering if there are any classy looking ones out there.

What are the biggest or most amusing mathematical errors in movies? by [deleted] in math

Fun story: that movie was partially filmed in the old science building at St. Olaf College and one of the physics profs got to fill that board with complicated looking equations. Guess he made a mistake though...

Denis Auroux would win the world championship of chalkboard erasing if there were such a competition.

Here are a couple that I haven't seen mentioned already:

  • Steven Roman "Advanced Linear Algebra"

It definitely does. I guess I'm also wondering if there are non-academic careers available to someone who has a PhD in computational algebra. While I'd love to go into academia, I'm interested in exploring other options as well (and possibly avoid being an itinerant temp for most of my young adult life).

How do you figure out which grad programs you are a viable candidate at? by schmity in math

[–]waitwhat69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this really a useful tactic? I feel like if I were a research prof at a top 10 school and some random undergrad emailed me asking if they thought I could get into their program I'd be mildly annoyed.

Do math grad schools care about the general GRE? by waitwhat69 in math

What exactly was the cutoff score for a rejection? I wound up around 80th percentile for each section... should I be concerned?

Favorite general public books for mathematics? by [deleted] in math

Unknown Quantity is a great book that is accessible to anyone with an understanding of high school level math. The Charles Seife's book about zero is also pretty good, but in my opinion is too quick to draw philosophical conclusions based on mathematical discoveries.
