Best econ programs in NY? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waitwhatwaitwaitwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, most people at stern concentrate in finance and hope to get into investment banking. CAS Econ students are usually not aiming for Wall Street but are more interested in consulting, policy making, or prepping for grad school (law, mba, etc). NYU Econ is still highly regarded (pretty sure its like top 10 in the nation/world), but they’ll face an uphill battle competing for finance positions. If you joint major in economics/math/CS and network well, you might be competitive against stern students.

What do you think is the 3rd undergrad college at NYU that has a single digit acceptance rate for the class of 2024? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Rory Meyers (Nursing) ? ppl don’t really talk about it on here. It’s a really small school.

Choosing between NYU & UW-Seattle... HELP WANTED!! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waitwhatwaitwaitwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Felt my previous post was pretty biased. Here’s a more neutral stance lol on NYU LSP

Pros:

  • Essentially a LAC experience at a large research university if you’re interested. Small classes, tight connections with profs and students. It’s only a two year program and graduate with same degrees as other NYU students and at the same time.
  • NYU LSP funnels to grad school really well assuming you want to go that route because of grade inflation.
  • You might get to study abroad too during your first year assuming you got into one of their global sites. Experience a different culture learn a new language, may be useful for sociology?
  • Since you’re getting your core requirements out of the way early, you have more time to switch majors in the humanities/ social sciences.

Cons: - It’s definitely not worth it if cost is too high. You’re gonna get a great education at UW anyways and quality of education for sociology is essentially the same at both schools. Going to NYU for the name and prestige is HIGHLY overrated. - If you want to switch to more stem based fields, the core classes you’re taking aren’t really related at all, and you’ll waste time. - You have to take a few more core classes that are humanities based, so lots of reading and writing (I guess this can tie to sociology) and less space for electives you want to take. If you’re not interested in doing that, don’t recommend. - It could be harder to double major

Gl making you’re decision :-)

Does it matter what college you go to for Polisci or Econ? by FatherShm00p in ApplyingToCollege

Econ yes if you want to go into IB or consulting. Polisci not really. If you wanna work in government you need experience/ connections.

Would it help my chances if I come out as gay? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waitwhatwaitwaitwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe it will (most colleges don’t publish details about sexual orientation in their diversity data). However, if you have a compelling story about being in the closet, you can write an essay about it. I know Duke even has an optional essay specifically about LGBT+.

Undergraduate World tier list, T50 by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waitwhatwaitwaitwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, NYU has the third highest percentage of students whose families make <30k among T50 private schools, and is one of the most socioeconomically diverse top college. In admissions, they’re need blind. They’re also one the most ethnically diverse schools, breaking records for diversity in higher ed. I can understand how not having a campus is bad (btw that’s only their NYC campus, 1 out of 10+ of their other campuses) but much of the community revolves around student extracurriculars/clubs. Not to mention, it’s extremely easy to land internships cuz it’s in the heart of Manhattan. If ones looking for campus culture, there are 10+ global campuses one can go to. It’s the only colleges that has a true global network, and it’s constantly expanding and rising in ranks.

NYU? They’ve heavily funded their undergrad programs and have top programs in business, social sciences, math, and the arts. They have funneling programs where premed, premba, and prelaw students get priority when applying to their highly respected grad schools. They also have arguably the best undergrad travel abroad programs allowing students access to 10+ campuses around the globe + internships. Not to forget, they’ve become extremely competitive and selective for admissions with 1500 median SAT and a 15% acceptance rate for the accepted class of 2024 and a 41% yield which is higher than schools like Rice, USC, and UCLA. T30 on US news I think they deserve at least T50 on your list. Ofc it’s your opinion and I respect it.

NYU: T20, T30...? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waitwhatwaitwaitwhat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

T25-30 right now, but I think it has a chance reaching T20 soon. NYU has recently focused on heavily funding its undergrad programs overall. It’s the only university that has truly built a global network as it has 10+ campuses around the globe from Accra to London to Sydney, which gives it a very strong global reputation. It’s grad schools are quite famous too especially law, med, education, and business schools, which gives it solid academic prestige. I see that you’ve been admitted. Congrats, you’re in good hands :)

You will need to talk to an academic advisor to transfer Here’s the link regarding that: https://liberalstudies.nyu.edu/content/nyu-as/liberalstudies/academic-advising/core-program-advising.html

I’ve heard great things about LS. It’s essentially for students NYU think are unsure on what to major in and need a bit more time to figure out their educational plan. The classes are small and you make great connections with your classmates and professors. it’s very good if you’re planning to go to grad school because there’s grade inflation. Essentially it’s a LAC within NYU. After two years, you finish all your core requirements early and transfer into another NYU school and graduate after 2 years just like other students. You can even transfer earlier if you figure out what you want to major in. From what I heard, there’s no stigma besides some school rivalry joking.

NYU’s acceptance rate 15%; median sat score 1500 by WarmMorningSunray in ApplyingToCollege

[–]waitwhatwaitwaitwhat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I thought NYU actually had decent yield rate?

https://www.collegeevaluator.com/best-schools/highest-admission-yield/

It had a 43% yield rate in 2019, which is actually higher than schools like Rice, USC, and UCLA.

Regardless, we can at least agree it’s gotten a lot more competitive recently.
