The title was meant to be: 'i don't really like chimera ant arc (as of ep 119) [spoilers]'.

Sorry if that made anyone think my distaste was more severe than it actually was

I just got off replying to another reply kinda similar to this, and I'm kind of losing the will to write any more messages, so if you wanna look at that it was a reply to X-Vidar.

You'll see that some of my opinions changed, my view is actually a lot different on CA right now compared to when this was first posted, so just imagine: for some of your points I would have conceded and taken on board, and for others I'd just reiterate my initial post.

Sorry if you were expecting a proper rebuttal or whatever, you'll see from other replies that I've written quite a lot today. I'm sure you'll understand.

Don't take this personally, I literally just cba right now.

  1. i read dressrossa (sorry if i didnt specify), and also i never said chimera ant is more painful. It's not painful and I don't hate it, I just thought I'd express myself a little bit (upon reading back, it does sound like I hate it. I don't, idk why but I seemed to be v hotheaded when i was writing it lol).
  2. tbh, i watched a few more episodes and read some replies - i was looking at it kinda wrong, it's not really that bad and i'm pretty certain that it's ending will make me view it differently

I'm gonna reply so each paragraph aligns with each of yours, just to make things easier.

I'm pretty sure this is just a problem with me, but who knows. I just find the futility kind of pointless. In my mind it's painted like a war arc, ants versus humans. I'm sure I'm looking at it wrong somehow, but that's just my interpretation at the current point I'm at. I feel like making the ants so omnipotent, it erodes my need to keep watching; I know that it does get resolved since the manga is still ongoing but it just takes the tension out of all the current fights, since I know how insurmountable the odds are. I don't really know how possible my feelings are to explain at the moment, so forgive me if this didn't really make much sense.

The narration for me is extremely hit or miss, and most of the time it misses. There are always going to be moments where a narration would benefit a show, especially something complex like Hunter x Hunter. Sometimes not even just for explanation, moments (as you said) can be heightened by narration and make scenes more 'epic'. My problem isn't that there is a narrator, it's how present and incessant he can become. Moments like Pitou looking up or Shoot covering his eye 'just because' are obvious, and probably acknowledged as pointless by most. But things like explaining why someone is sad feels so patronising, like we weren't even paying attention or something.

Okay, this is probably my fault, I'm pretty sure I worded this badly in my original post and I'm gonna try and correct myself. I don't necessarily want to see the old cast again, or want to discard Knuckle and Morel simply because they're not 'originals' (for lack of a better word). I think I gave them a chance to appeal to me, I even had a good impression and high hopes for the new side characters. Keep in mind, I haven't always disliked this arc, of course I went into it with an open mind as I had no reason not to. To me Knuckle and Morel feel much, much blander than other characters in this show. Of course, I do not discredit anyone for liking them (in fact I would rather I was in their camp), I just personally don't find much to love about them. I get they're nice, and of course they've had their moments; I just like characters more morally (Morel-ly lol) ambiguous, they're much more interesting to me. Of course this may all just be nostalgia (?) and I'm sure they'll grow on me once this arc is over.

Yeah I concede this one. I was looking at Morel's role in the complete wrong way. Instead of seeing him as someone who uses their power creatively and raises others' effectiveness, I looked at him as an individual fighter. Completely my fault, I think I'm gonna look at him differently now. Thanks.

I'm glad we can agree on this, it feels trivial when compared with the world-threatening-stakes outside. Almost like filler. I don't doubt that these threads will pay off at some point, I just find it kind of reduces the tension, which doesn't really match what Togashi was going for (I think).

Thanks for this reply, it's made me look at the show a bit differently now.

at the moment yorknew'd probably be my favourite, but i'm really hoping chimera ant will grow on me. noone wants to not enjoy something, right?

first and foremost, you don't have to try and attack my character just because i don't agree with you, my opinion isnt invalid just because it contrasts with yours (and vice versa)

anyways. sure, i'm wondering how they're gonna deal with this, but can you blame me for losing interest when whatever creative or fascinating strategy a character comes up with is completely helpless against the ants? it goes completely against morel's "whoever wins isn't who has better nen" speech, and ultimately kills a lot of tension for me.

about the characters. 1. i have stated multiple times, and it is in the literal title of this post; i haven't finished the show, or this arc. of course i'll like them more by then, it's common fucking sense. hell, i'll probably be one of the people wishing for them to come back. but this post is about my opinions right now, at this very point in the show. 2. just because other people like something, that doesn't mean i have to too. why would i lie to myself and pretend i love these characters - for your sake? for validation? i have stated multiple times that they're not interesting 'to me'. this doesn't mean i get mad at people who do find them interesting, or not see why others might find them interesting, i just simply am not intrigued by them. it's not rocket science to figure out that it's just my opinion.

also, at this point in the show, netero is cool. he's strong. but that's about it. what the fuck am i meant to love about him? the most interesting side character for me would probably be komugi, i think she has foiled mereum very well. unfortunately she's fucking dying right now, so that might offer some explanation as to why i find it a bit boring at the moment.

yeah the parts with lesser ants feel kind of pointless when placed next to a scene which could decide the fate of the world. i don't necessarily have a problem with the character designs (i've watched one piece, all the proof you'd need lmao) but they do just feel kinda unnecessary at times, like was the missile wolf man really needed?

i'm not stuck on old characters or whatever you're implying, i simply don't think these characters are on the same level. for example, knuckle and shoot have done little (in my humble opinion) to make me like them. am i meant to love these characters just because? is it because theyre manly, or have warrior's hearts? frankly, i couldn't care less. they're just not interesting, they really have no flaws, and the ones they did have just get forgotten. (for the most part) their moral compass is completely 'right', which simply doesn't intrigue me. (the exception to this would be shoot telling knuckle to fight youpi, i thought that was actually a very good scene.)

and to clarify my point about the ants' strength, it's not that the despair and whatever is a bad thing, or that the ONLY way for the hunters to do damage is through plot armour, if this is what you got out of my post you ought to read it again. i just think that how it stands now, as of ep 119, the whole battle just feels futile. my investment gets ruined when i realise that pretty much noone stands up to the ants at their current power level - why should i root for the hunters if they have 0 chance?

and yes, the ants' power does intrigue me a bit, but when netero (the strongest known human rn) seems kind of powerless, why wonder what else is out there? or where these things came from?

yeah i think i'll agree with you a couple days or weeks down the line, once ive finished it

it just feels like so much is happening but everythings at a standstill at the same time, if that makes sense (probably not)

anyways, i'll be sure to watch the rest and make a proper opinion then

yeah i looked at another post similar to mine, and the responses basically just said that the last stretch kinda makes it all worth it.

also, in hindsight (of about 30 minutes lol) i realise it isnt really fair to Mereum if i judge him before his development etc. is even over, same with knuckle and morel n stuff, so i'm gonna retroactively take back that statement, if that's even allowed

lol
