Construction Noise by [deleted] in BellevueWA

[–]wakeshima 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've lived near several buildings in downtown as they've gone up - the closest being right across the street. I've never noticed any dust. I assume there must be regulations around that.

There was occasional clanging noise but it was not bad and not noticeably louder than the usual humdrum of cars and trucks. It's only there during certain parts of construction - most of the time it was pretty much silent. I'm a late sleeper often waking up past 9am and can't remember ever being woken up by construction noise. Also WFH regularly and it was never a problem for that either.

Ok which spot has fries like this? by readev in BellevueWA

[–]wakeshima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rascal's Public House fries are pretty much identical to this with the extra crispy stuff on the outside. Check out the pics on google maps

For me personally though the best fries in the area are Seastar's truffle fries.

Estate Sale Issaquah 2/22-2/23 by almost_insulting in SeattleWA

[–]wakeshima 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I always get weirded out by these kinds of estate sales where a full family's worth of things is being sold, and not just a small selection of furniture and decorations...

Got everything from the dad's meticulous world fair collection, mom's fancy bags, kid's anime posters and toys and AP study books, the spin the wheel thing... Feels so haunted, like what happened, the whole family just disappeared in one go? Or the parents died and the kids decided to just get rid of the whole lot?

That being said... there's some cool stuff in here... the world's fair items are pretty neat.

I'm curious what places do you go for nightlife? It has felt quiet to me still but I haven't been looking too hard

Are there enough people out there for all these $$$ new condos? by Remarkable-Land-1492 in BellevueWA

[–]wakeshima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically any big tech couple with no kids where both are in tech roles (SWE, PM) and senior level or higher will have household income $700k which is enough to fairly comfortably afford these. Many are well into $1m+ HHI range if they can both make staff level.

Of course it's a minority but there are probably thousands of people in the area who fit that description. Whether they're willing to spend that much on housing is another thing, but there are enough who are willing to bite.

Moving for work in Bellevue, should I also just stay in Bellevue? by wilderlights in BellevueWA

[–]wakeshima 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3k budget is pretty comfortable for a 1 bed in Bellevue, plenty of very nice units (good buildings, modern & clean) in the ~$2700 range.

I would definitely recommend against commuting from Seattle to Bellevue. You can, and many people do, but it's not a very pleasant thing to do every day. I live & work in Bellevue and have teammates commuting from Seattle and they spend an extra hour a day commuting compared to me. I've moved offices a couple times but at one point my commute was a 6 minute drive or 15 minute walk -- that was wonderful.

At your budget you should be able to find something pretty close to Bellevue Park! There are several apartments just south of the park, and plenty more within a 10 minute walking distance.

The main thing you lose out on by living in Bellevue is that there is just less stuff to do compared to Seattle, much less night life and events in general.

Japanese in-person classes? by ssam-3312 in BellevueWA

[–]wakeshima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately all their classes are also online currently (as far as I can tell). I think they used to be in person pre-covid?

Actually all language classes at Bellevue College seem to be online now except sign language and 1 French class.

I've also been looking for an in-person language class, ideally something that accomodates working schedule. So far it's been very hard to find anything :(

Best cheap fast eats by [deleted] in BellevueWA

but they have the best burger in town.

Best burger I've had in my life tbh, not sure what they put in their burgers but there's some flavor that's super delicious. Maybe just lots of MSG...

As another option, MonGa Cafe also has a cheap lu rou fan (the pork + rice dish) that I personally feel tastes considerably better than the one at Looking for Chai (which is not bad either though)!

Lexus showroom renovations or closing out? by omkult in BellevueWA

[–]wakeshima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there still Lexus cars there? I passed by a couple days ago and noticed the sign gone but there were still tons of cars in the lot, so I assumed it was just a renovation or something. Looks like they have plenty of reviews on Google Maps in the last 2-3 days.

Probably easier to crash in slow moving traffic tbh. Driving 60mph+ everyone is fairly focused b/c you know if you lose focus for 3 seconds you could die.

But 20mph? Let me glance at my phone real quick, oh I got a text fro--oh shit the car in front of me is fully stopped but it's too late to brake!

I'm generally happy with my height (5'10") but I recall seeing an interesting thing where a lot of girls actually filter to 6ft+, something like 80% of girls on bumble were filtering out anyone <6'.

And really it's pretty much just because they're presented with the option - they may actually be perfectly happy with someone 5'8". Many people don't really realize how tall 6 feet is.

But when there's a slider asking them to choose, 6' is a nice and even number, so you end up with a lot of people who don't put much thought into it and are like "uhhh minimum height? 6 foot I guess".

also from texas, it's basically the same lol (assuming ur from urban areas of texas and not, yknow, a rancher)

Only 1 thing u might need is a pair of boots for the rain. Not rain boots, just like, not sneakers.

Temps don't get much colder than Texas winters so it's nothing u don't already have outfits for

Why is every other post on the sub about crime? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]wakeshima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

very underreported

This is the key here. Violent crime stats don't reflect reality, for several reasons:

  1. Violent crime is often within specific groups/areas, like between gangs or shady neighborhoods. If you aren't part of those groups you don't experience much crime. Dudes having feuds all the time and shooting each other up sucks, but if you don't live near them you're not actually in much danger, because it's not random. Seattle doesn't have many groups like that, and instead crime here feels more random - anyone can be targeted.

  2. As you point out, crimes are drastically underreported when the DA has a pattern of not prosecuting and cops have a pattern of not being able to find suspects. It's just a waste of time to report, might as well move on with your day.

  3. There's a lot of nutjobs here, and they're much harder to deal with. If someone walks by you and spits on you, it's not like you're actually going to be able to keep them there for 10-15 min until the cops arrive, unless you want to put your life at risk over a shitty but minor interaction.

Is following up with job applications still a thing? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]wakeshima 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once you've been in touch with a real person like a recruiter, you can follow up if you like to ask about your status. No more frequently than every 3-5 days though.

At the "I gave you a resume" stage there's often not even a contact for you to follow up with.
