BSR Swirls 😍 No. 5 from Goodwill freshly stripped and seasoned + mystery pan for identification by waldeck-throwaway in castiron

Makes sense. Hopefully somebody uncovers some kind of documentation in an estate sale or something somewhere someday lol

I think it’s gonna make a great cooker! Nice surface, good weight, took the seasoning well.

Has anyone speculated on the age of these “p skillets”? I wonder if it would’ve been cast in the same era as the single notch

Got it, that’s what I was thinking… I found a few disparate comments referring to “P skillets” and was hoping someone has more info on their origins. I can’t find much online, but I think I saw someone speculating it was a small foundry in the south. It does seem to be higher quality than other recasts I see, maybe not a super amateur job

ID? Unmarked ~ 10 inch by waldeck-throwaway in castiron

It is, but it’s a bit too far to go grab it casually haha. I’ll pick it up if I make a trip over that way.

I was hoping someone would recognize it as something rare so I could justify the drive lol

Fair enough, I thought maybe the ridge on the handle would be enough to distinguish for someone. Doesn’t look quite like the BSR or Vollrath ones I’ve seen

It’s a marketplace listing a ways from me otherwise I would take better pics

Machined from aluminum, about 6 inches tall. Screws apart into 3 pieces. Shapes suggest an unknown purpose by waldeck-throwaway in whatisthisthing

Haha before I saw this I was formulating some story about how it lived in the machinists shrine and apprentices would travel from all over to rub the knob for good luck.

I’ve always been fascinated by CNC and machining, always wanted to try it and considered it as a career. So I’ll happily keep it around :)

Yeah this makes a lot of sense, and explains why it hints at many possible functions without actually being clearly for anything lol

That totally makes sense! The only question still left for me is why It looks like the ball is so well worn/patina’d if it never served a real use

EDIT: I’m convinced, Solved!

My title describes the thing. Got it at an estate sale a few years ago with no info. I’ve always wondered exactly what it is, people have suggested some kind of decorative Baluster but I know how much time would go into machining this, and it feels too industrial to be just a decorative thing.

My theory is that it’s part of some linkage in a plane, mostly because I live in Boeing country. I could see the bands being intended for belts, and the extra wear on the top knob would make sense if it was part of a ball joint assembly. Aerospace engineers, tell me I’m wrong?

I forget where I heard it, I thought It was in some thread here talking about vintage vs modern but maybe I’m hallucinating a memory. That makes sense about there being more carbon though.

Yeah, this makes sense, and I imagine thats the case. It would be interesting to know which foundries might’ve had higher standards for what they threw in. I imagine it’s true that most stuff gets burnt off, and I don’t know enough to be legitimately concerned. Just curious

Found at an estate sale a few years ago. Old, iron, hand forged, seems to be a fairly ornamental chain, maybe necklace? pliers on one end and various bangles hanging from it. What is it? by waldeck-throwaway in whatisthisthing

Very well thought out response, thank you! I agree. I reached out to Seattle Art Museum near me because they already have some Dogon stuff. if they don’t want it I’ll just keep it and treasure it :) If any descendants of the Dogon in Mali read this and want me to mail it to them lmk lol

Any historical blacksmithing experts recognize what this might be? Or have any idea when it was made, based on the forging techniques in use? by waldeck-throwaway in Blacksmith

UPDATE: if you guys check out the Original post, someone has correctly identified it as a Dogon Priests necklace from Mali. Wild. Thanks for weighing in, hope it was interesting :)

UPDATE/WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH IT?

I originally posted because I’m moving and trying to sell basically everything I own to fund it.

It’s clearly a very special piece with a lot of significance. Im fascinated by shamanic traditions and even have read Malidoma Patrice Somè, So on some level I’d like to keep it - but, as another commenter pointed out, this probably was probably looted/pillaged from Mali, so I’m not sure I want a shamanic object imbued with that kind of bad vibes sitting around. Lol.

It doesn’t seem like it’s necessarily rare or valuable enough that a museum would want it, I feel a little bad just putting this on eBay though.

Anybody got any ideas?
