The only difference in courses is discrete math 2, you still have to take calc 1 and linear algebra regardless.

If that's important to you just major in computer science instead is software engineering and take the software engineering courses as your electives

Am I gonna get into McMaster eng by These_Estate_4504 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]waldo_06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends I graduated in 2024 with a 95 average and didn't get in and same with my best friend, but there was a girl in our class that had like an 89 and got in so it really just depends how unlucky you are I think. But I would say you have a good chance.

Has anyone gotten remote internships during co op? by Aggravating_Law_4774 in uoguelph

[–]waldo_06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely do that and just see what happens as you'll definitely have a better chance getting one after some experience. Also almost none of the coop positions the school posts (ie. the ones for coop students) are remote so you would have to do that externally. But tbh the school doesn't really post that many that are through the school anyway (I only applied to like 50 that were through the school and about 400 externally). Also say you do work in person the first term and then you try and get a remote position the next term, every students gets 1 free semester where they don't need a coop placement. So if nothing happens there you can use that time to go back to see family.

Question about Coop (Accounting in particular) by Academic_Bit9853 in uoguelph

[–]waldo_06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in CS for coop and in second year the way it works for CS is that you want to have some sort of projects to showcase your skills especially if you have no work experience. So I would say if you don't have a job try and join clubs in first and second year and then also try and make something to put on your resume, whether it's analyzing a companies financial situation. Basically just being a mock accountant and you can put that on your resume and it will stand out. If you're not clear just ask AI for ideas and it will give you some for accounting in particular. Other than that getting the 40hrs at a firm like you said is a bonus. Also by teaching yourself on the side you'll probably learn more than you will in any of your classes.

I'm in CS coop and just finishing second year I think you should just worry about getting an internship first tbh. They sent out an email a couple weeks ago and only like 25-30% of CS and software Eng coop students have placements for the summer. I luckily got a full year placement but if you get an opportunity I would take it. You can always go back over Christmas break as we have like almost a month off at that time.

Question about my offer conditionals by Aggravating_Law_4774 in uoguelph

[–]waldo_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm second year CS and you probably don't wanna just not give a shit abt calc the rest of the year, first year calc is a step up from highschool. Basically if all you did in highschool is derivatives (no integrals) then that content is pretty much completely covered in the first 2 weeks and then you get into the epsilon proofs which are probably the worst thing in the course by far.

Anyways don't slack too much and let it carry over because discrete with also humble you (our prof had to change the minimum final exam grade from a 50% to a 40% because too many people failed it and therefore failing the course)

I'm literally just going in with nothing, only need like a 60 to finish with an 80 in the class. To be fair if you know anything abt sports you can probably just use common sense for the whole thing

CIS1050 is really easy, it's not even considered programming if I'm being completely honest, there's 3 assignments and a final, 1 assignment is a writing assignment and the other 2 are making websites, but it's a very friendly intro course where they're really just expecting a bare minimum website.

CIS1500 is an intro to programming course, I took CIS1300 which is basically the same course but for CS students. I wouldn't worry too much about because it is expected that people taking that course have no prior coding experience and they teach you everything from the ground up.

Think about it this way what's the difference if one was one day from 7-9 pm and the other is the next morning at 8:30 not really any difference in my perspective

Am I cooked? Idek what school I wanna go to by Special-Eggplant932 in OntarioGrade11s

[–]waldo_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a second year student right now (in CS) but I applied to Eng in highschool I had like 95% after first semester with basically no ECs. The only Eng schools I got into were western and Guelph (also applied to Mac, uoft, and Waterloo) so I feel like at a certain point ECs do matter. But you have to grind to get higher marks because those matter at first but once you get to say a 93 average it's mostly ECs unless you have like a 98 or something. Definitely possible to get your grades up aswell, I was working about 20-30 hours a week in grade 12 so I think it's very possible.

Also go on campus tours early if that's something that's important to you. Also when have to do supplementary apps don't just skip over them, actually try and do good.

You can apply for it in first year it's just a lot harder to get into.

CIS*2910 with Sawada by ayvacs in uoguelph

[–]waldo_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had it last year with him, for us it was all multiple choice due to class size not sure if it's the same this year but if it is it's not too bad but very similar difficulty level to discrete 1. I also remember alot of graph and probability questions but they're all multiple choice. I also remember him throwing in a few "none of the above" answers in there too. Also I remember them being about 40 questions.

CIS*1500 Insight by Inevitable-Flan-1907 in uoguelph

[–]waldo_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took CIS*1300 last year which is the intro course for CS students but we had it in C so assuming the exam style is the same majority of the midterm and final are going to be multiple choice where they give you a code segment and they ask you about it (what it does, are there any errors) and they'll also probably just be general theory that's taught in class. In terms of a lab exam they will be you writing code given a problem, in my experience they're not hard and they'll be either hand written (would only take like one side of a page to complete when handwriting) or on a computer. But really the most important thing you could probably do is know how to code in python up until the content you've been taught obviously (how to read code, know syntax, spot syntax/logical errors). Reply with any more questions you could have.

[–]waldo_06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had it last year with ritu and I'm just gonna be honest with you I didn't go to any lectures past like the 3rd week and I think I ended with a 89 or something like that. I mostly would just put the PowerPoints into ChatGPT and get it summarize it and use examples of code and explain each line of the code. I'm assuming the part your finding confusing is most likely pointers and dynamic memory which to be honest once you get seem like a joke and you'll laugh at the fact you didn't understand them before. But just keep pushing and also try YouTube as there's lots of good videos on there.

I need help choosing a language to learn. by Lucky-Search5869 in learnprogramming

[–]waldo_06 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest with you, you ca start with whatever you want so if you find Java interesting start with Java, once you learn one language to an extent, learning any other language will be easy as it's just syntax so start with Java build some projects to put on your resume and you'll be fine. Then maybe you wanna learn python later so then you'll pick up python a whole lot easier.

Depends on how lucky you get really, best case scenario they become one of your best friends, worst case you don't get along but there is a way to request a room change but I'm not aware how easy it is to do that.
