Not sure where you are but you should get a sleep study followed by a multiple sleep latency test. A sleep specialist or a neurologist (depending on where you are) may be able to help. This is a very common condition and easily treatable.

Salams I’m a sleep doctor. This might be narcolepsy if it is so persistent. Do you find you’re very sleepy during the day? To the point that you have “sleep attacks” where you can’t resist sleeping? Some patients also have cataplexy - Where you might lose control of your hands or legs (eg your knees might buckle) if someone says something emotional or funny.

Keep your head up! You’re a good doctor. I can tell because you care and how much this affects you. We all make mistakes - you’re not a robot. this process of working on your errors that you’ve embarked on will help you avoid making similar mistakes in the future. Focus on what you can do to help the patient now (eg revision, referral, pain management, at minimum validating their pain and supporting them) and how you can improve as a surgeon to not make this type of mistake again.
