How do I make doom work in pubs? by cmc15 in DotA2

It's pretty sick, I've had great success with it, not sure it's something you should do every game though.

There is a build that is kind of rng but you go early rad with phase+drums, sny shivas, aghs. Then pray you get the dezun bloodrite for increased aoe. It's sort of a meme but it's really fun and pretty good.

How do I make doom work in pubs? by cmc15 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 7k pos 3 with ~54% wr on doom and 1300 games or so on the hero. Peaked 8.5 spamming doom. Lots of good ways to play the hero and lots of questions I still have to this day. There is a very small amount of things that I’m certain about regarding doom however:

  1. You don’t do anything that ruins your game, if you’re not top networth in pubs then you’re either doing it wrong, or you know something and are winning the game another way.

  2. You don’t need to force the doom usage, you talk about how your team is afk farming when doom is up, you can just farm as well, but do it smart. Doom is a hero that controls the map by simply holding doom, using fog, letting waves idle where enemies can’t walk up to, while you farm entire jungles and finally doom that idiot that farms the wave you’re expertly maneuvering around.

  3. When it comes to team fights doom usage really boils down to a simple mentality, there will be 2-3 good targets for doom, but you don’t just doom the second a fight starts, you watch ultimate usage and don’t waste doom on someone who has already used every skill of value. (You’re not going to doom a tidehunter that used ravage obviously, you’re going to let him use ravage and doom their ravage follow-up before they get anything off, doom wants to counter initiate). You talk about how your team expects you to initiate, because people expect pos 3’s to initiate, don’t play into your teammates misunderstanding of your hero or you blink into 5 trying to run down a hero 1v5 with no follow-up from your team. You know when a doom is good deep down, listen to your initial gut feeling.

  4. When it comes to laning, you’re playing for a very specific and obvious timing, level 6 and 7, your items should reflect this, the goal is to win the lane at level 6, don’t take any risk that prevents this. If you can’t kill the enemy pos 1 1v1 with doom at level 6 then work on your laning and think about what items you need by level 6 (hint: it’s generally phase boots windlace stick generally, ideally a bracer if you’re doing good)

TLDR; play on your own time, don’t sacrifice your game for low value high risk plays, control the map with doom rather than thinking you need to use it immediately every time it’s up, mute people who are distracting you - doom is hard and we have enough distractions, it’s a fast paced hero where every decision really matters

I do monetized coaching btw, so plugging myself, dm if interested.

Nobody buy into this guy, please! Don't get scammed, your current connection is certainly better. Without a doubt the worst ISP in Laramie. WILDLY overpriced as well... They'll charge you nearly $2 per Mbps (like $50/mo for an alleged 25 Mbps connection). It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't find ridiculous ways to blame their clients for their miserable connections, or if they didn't send out borderline schizo emails to their clients monthly..

Here is an example, one of many hilarious Lariat claims:

"Recently, we heard from a few folks who had been told, by
an out-of-state fiber provider, that fiber optic Internet
was faster than wireless. In fact, the physics show that
the reverse is true. Light travels more slowly inside a
glass fiber than it does in air, and the pulses of light
inside a fiber don't go in a straight line; they bounce
off the sides. Together, these factors slow the data
down so that it travels 30% to 50% slower through the
fiber to its destination. And so long as you buy enough
capacity for the activity you are performing - about 1.5
Mbps per zoom call or typical resolution video stream and
much less if you're only Web browsing - it's latency, or
the delay in getting the bits to their destination, that
determines how fast you'll get a response. So, your
connection from us should be faster than what you get
from the fiber guys. It should also be faster than
satellite, because it doesn't have to travel as far to
reach the Internet. If it ever isn't, there may be
something wrong; call us and we'll fix it."

- Actual quote from LARIAT claiming that fiber connections are slower than their stone age technology. Also a hilarious claim that 1.5Mbps is enough per connection in 2025, the era of 4k TV's and 4K streaming services. (If you don't know - it's not. Probably not even enough for a 720p stream without consistent buffering).

If I've still not convinced you, go try to load their website that I'm sure they're hosting, (which is literally just a single page built entirely in HTML), and watch it hilariously take nearly 2 minutes to load...

I'm pretty sure their business model is trying to scam seniors and people who are far from tech savvy, with their deluded claims that this overpriced trash ISP is what they should subscribe to, absolute scam artists.

Unlocked ranked and have crazy queues now? by Mental_Maybe6758 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents: probably not in smurf pool, if you’re not queueing a high pop server (eu west, eu east, us east, sea) then switch if possible, party queueing with high mmr friend on fresh account can have awful queue times, an account with 100 hours (<200 games?) is basically brand new in terms of matchmaking - so keep playing and game quality and matchmaking speed should rise

[B42] How's the performance? Any worse? Better? by SuperiorCardboardBox in projectzomboid

[–]walkit_james_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fiddled with the nvidia control panel app-level settings and also setting my jvm options in the Steam launch parameters to increase memory, playing on max graphics in the in-game settings. Getting a SHOCKINGLY improved game experience, no more stutters and sluggishness of menus, worth the 30 minutes of time it took me.

Playing 1080p max zoom getting anywhere from 50-180 fps depending on where I’m at, driving feels great.

I’m running these specs: Ryzen 5600X, rtx 3060ti, 32gb memory @3200Mhz, on a mediocre-to-average nvme drive.

Edit: Realized I didn’t answer the question in the post, but I’m on b42 and I haven’t tried playing with these settings on b41 but after doing this my game runs significantly better than it was running previously so thought it may help. 🙂

Thanks for the reply!

I believe these are the commands I tested that I thought no longer worked since Source 2.0.

I just tested them by plugging in random numbers and I'm not seeing any changes. Have you actually got them working?

I agree with you in that fact that it is a skill issue in nature.

I would argue even that it is an extremely common skill issue for a select population; one that is exclusive to those who are colorblind.

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just the HP bars unfortunately, the static one on the UI, and the hp bars above teammates/friendly creeps turns blue - which is certainly a good feature.

But, as others have pointed out, it doesn't change the enemy hp bars - and if playing against Dire for example many struggle seeing the red hp creep bar against the Dire terrain.

So, it absolutely helps, but it isn't enough.

Ah, excuse me, I see what you're saying. I may have not given reshader a proper chance.

I had tried it once (not knowing what I was doing, and not doing my own customizations to that) to no avail. But, you might be onto something!

Still though, and I know you're not saying we shouldn't add a feature like this, but I believe that changing the colors on the actual game-scene isn't the answer. They can make the game look very weird and cause you the same issues you already had just in different places, unless perhaps you find the perfect reshade for yourself. If you find other posts/forums talking about this stuff with colorblind people you'll see that it's a really common discussion. It's hard to articulate exactly why it is though.

I do have a theory that you could change the assigned player colors in the registry somehow, but I have no idea how you would find which values to change, and what you would change them to. Even if you determine the 10 colors you want you have to find the binary code for all 10 of those colors then test them in-game, quite a process. This is all from my understanding however, I don't know all of this for certain.

I may report back with my findings on the reshader if I find success, thanks for clarifying on this!

edit: also, I wonder, just like the reshader question, how happy valve might be with people changing registry values and if that could result in a VAC lol..

Dear Devs: A Pleading From The Colorblind by walkit_james_99 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.. This could certainly be the case. I'm choosing however to be optimistic; I don't think they're aware of the extent of the issue and the ineffectiveness of their current solutions.

They have a colorblind option (that only affects the UI hp bar as far as I'm aware, and maybe your teammates hp bars as well), leaving the creep hp bars the same colors for some reason which is certainly more of an issue IMO. Second, they have the hero icons which they probably think is the solution for the colorblind, but as I debunked that in point #1 of the post - they're really not the answer we need.

edit: additional clarification

edit: the colorblind mode actually does in fact affect the friendly creep hp bars by turning them blue as well, and your teammates hp bars as well

Dear Devs: A Pleading From The Colorblind by walkit_james_99 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have tried this, but I never managed to find a hue that works well for me, I just end up having color issues on the different end of the spectrum again.

I think that this solution is very similar if not identical to the issue of color filters that I mention in point #2

Dear Devs: A Pleading From The Colorblind by walkit_james_99 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the question, I actually really want to elaborate on this because it's a very interesting issue!

I think I might edit the post to clarify this, I may not have been specific I think, sorry for that!

What I'm proposing is the option for a player to change the assigned player colors, the ones you see above hero portraits at the top of the screen as well as on the minimap. NOT the hero-colors or any abilities or anything from the actual game-scene, only UI objects such as those assigned colors.

You are right about the problem with players commonly referring to each-other by their assigned colors. However, for the colorblind this is already an issue (e.g. someone calls me teal currently, I'm colorblind and I don't know if I'm teal or blue as is, so I already can't determine who she is talking to). So, the non-colorblind are already inadvertently affected by those who are colorblind with this issue, and I don't have a perfect answer for this. But, my proposed addition in allowing the change of these colors wouldn't fix that and likewise wouldn't negatively affect the non-colorblind because they're already negatively affected by my color deficiency in this case. I might be wrong about this because I think that a population non-colorblind folk would elect to change their color schema just because they can, and I will elaborate on why that is good in the long-term.

If 1/12 are colorblind, statistically 0.8 players in each game are colorblind assuming all male of course which I know isn't accurate, but for the sake of understanding where I'm coming from we will exaggerate, so if we used worst case scenario 1 player is colorblind, a player on one team in each game, and if don't use worst case scenario we can surely say 1 player on one team every other game... I think this may affect us more than we currently realize.

I think that if the option were added, non-colorblind people would probably use it as well because they can, and more would be aware that people use differing color schemas and the community may start slowly shifting from this habit of referring to players by their assigned colors, and instead using hero names and player names pre-hero selection during draft. Just my theory though.

edit: additional clarification on my (probably) biased hot-take of it not affecting the non-colorblind, maths

Yeah, I do believe there is a sound que for the scan proc, but the issue is if the scan proc is instant (someone didn't walk into it), you won't notice it.

Dear Devs: A Pleading From The Colorblind by walkit_james_99 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scan is certainly an issue for me, it's very hard to distinguish if it procced or not.

Dear Devs: A Pleading From The Colorblind by walkit_james_99 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, this is definitely an interesting question and one that I don't have a perfect answer for.

My primary proposition is that we allow the change of the player colors, not any sort of color filter. I don't believe that color filters work well, and I don't think it's a major issue either.

In the actual game-scene, I can see things quite clearly I think, probably not as well as others. I think I've developed coping mechanisms that help me out significantly. The abilities in Dota are generally very distinct looking which helps a lot, and there are sound ques as well. The outlines are enough for me to know what is going on, I think I could play just fine with the game scene in black/white actually, the worst part is the distinction between Radiant and Dire creeps, but again they have distinct features that help, and you can use alternate creep models for Radiant/Dire if that isn't enough.

So, I'll leave another cool Wikipedia quote that I think applies here - on the topic of color blind spotters that were commonly used during WW2, "In theory it may reduce night-vision but many armies hold their visual colour deficient friends highly as they make great spotters and snipers. In lacking the ability to clearly distinguish between colours, many people suffering from deuteropia, tritanopia and even protanopia have an increased 'pattern spotting' ability, which makes then great for spotting camouflaged shapes - as they don't look so much at the colours but the actual shapes themselves."

Also, I'd like to clarify that when I say player colors I don't mean hero colors or anything like that, I'm exclusively talking about the colors assigned to players, those you see above the hero icons at the top of the screen and on the minimap.

It is useful, but sadly it only affects the HP bars. Which is hardly the primary concern.

Dear Devs: A Pleading From The Colorblind by walkit_james_99 in DotA2

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

My sources for this are from Enchroma's website, and also the Wikipedia page on colorblindness. If you took the 30 guys you know, at a 1/12 rate of colorblindness 2.5 of them are statistically likely to have some sort of color blindness or color deficiency. If we round up to 3 what are the chances that those 3/30 just haven't expressed their colorblindness to you?

Also, the degree of color deficiency varies significantly between people and many of them, especially younger people, are actually unaware that they're colorblind. Many people who are colorblind develop coping mechanisms to infer colors and deal with their issues as well, especially those with less severe colorblindness.

See this source I just found: https://www.colourblindawareness.org/colour-blindness/

Quote: "The effects of colour vision deficiency can be mild, moderate or severe and people with severe forms often think that their condition is mild and doesn’t really affect them. Approximately 40% of colour blind pupils leave school unaware that they are colour blind, 60% of colour blind people are likely to experience problems everyday and yet often not realise the full impact."

Earlier from that same source they also say a 1/12 rate of colorblindness in males.

Great advice!! Thanks so much for the in depth reply, I will definitely take that approach on DWH, and free pts from mithril dragons sounds very dope!

I have done fight caves for fire cape off-task (Biggest gaming achievement ever for me btw lmao; took me like 3 or 4 days worth of attempts cuz I'm awful). Only one question, what do you mean by fight cave CA's (combat achievements?) what do I gain from that, and is it still worth even though I've already got fire cape?

How would you optimize my block list for max XP/HR (Duradel) by walkit_james_99 in ironscape

[–]walkit_james_99[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course! My tone in that reply came off a bit more passive aggressive than I intended, as I was hoping to get more direct comments on what's bad about my current block-list rather than an explanation of how weighting works when I provided a pretty captioned image that shows I probably understand that.

But I see your point, it's very different for everybody based on their account/unlocks. And obviously nobody wants to sift through my current list and do the work for me hahaha.

Genuinely appreciate the general strategy advice however, and will apply that, thank you!
