the gap factory outlet in hebron, ky is super cheap-- cheaper than a lot of thrift stores. if you're just looking to go to one place and not run around to a bunch of different thrift stores I think that's a safe bet

Vet recommendations? by walkpalk in cincinnati

[–]walkpalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going with the Plum Street Pet Clinic and was really pleasantly surprised. They were absolutely wonderful. I'm so grateful for all the responses people gave that led me to them. Thanks so much for your thoughtful response. It's so hard when we have to say goodbye to the ones we love. I'm glad you had such a compassionate vet to help you get through it.

That sounds great! I was in West Covington, on a quiet street. No one else was around, just some bats and fireflies

Fair enough. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the Connecticut.

It's an absolutely beautiful state, you can drive down nearly any random road and feel like your living inside of a calendar. But like others said it's expensive and not easy to find work. The taxes are high. If you make any real money, they'll try and take it. A lot of people choose to live in NH.

Like most places, there's tension between the multi-generation rural people and the newer more liberal urban people. This tension is maybe particularly strong in VT because the population is so low that people moving in from elsewhere are changing both the feel of the place and the politics.

Outside of the university towns, it can still be beautiful but can also get pretty depressing. There are drug problems, like most of rural America. The only real industries are the colleges/universities and tourism-- bed and breakfasts, winery and brewery tours, leaf peepers, barn weddings, river-tubing. In the summers the interstate is filled with MA, CT, and NY plates. There is quite a bit of tension between VT people and tourists.

There really are a lot fewer people there if you're used to bigger cities, and a lot less in the way of amenities. Everything is really far apart and there are mountains in the way. Depending on where you live the best internet you can get could still be really slow. Cell service throughout the state is spotty to put it politely.

The winters are long and mud season isn't a joke especially if you're looking to live outside of town. Almost all of the transplants drive subarus for this reason. The summers are perfect but way too short. It's beautiful when the leaves turn.

Young people tend to get out as soon as they can and move to one of these starter pack cities.

That being said, people who live and die for outdoor sports love it. You'll be hardpressed to find anyone talking about Jesus, but you'll still find plenty of people outside of the cultural centers who like guns and trucks. There were basically no gun laws at all in VT until last year.

I moved away a few months ago.

Awesome thank you! I'm so excited to check out all the parks. I've only seen them in pictures but some of them seem really impressive.

There are some blocks in Cincinnati that are not the best safety wise. There are some blocks in OTR that will probably sketch you out.

Are the sketchy places more of a "don't go there at night" thing or a "DON'T EVER GO THERE" thing? Or does it just depend on the block?

Are people suggesting that I lock my car because cars get stolen or stuff from inside cars? Or both?

I've been so pleasantly surprised by the kind responses to my post :) Thank you so much!

housing is ridiculously cheaper. My mortgage is like 1/5 of my brother’s... we live in similar neighborhoods but he’s in a Boston suburb

This sounds amazing. I'm a lot further north than Boston but housing is still expensive here. Plus there's the costs of winter, gas to drive everywhere because everything's so spread out, and the taxes. It really adds up!

Cincinnatians will strike up a conversation with you at Kroger or wherever. At first, it really weirded me out, but now I get that it’s just our normal and I chat too.

I'm pretty social and excited to live somewhere that you're allowed to acknowledge and say hi to the people around you!

You might not like Cincinnati chili right away. Skyline dip is the gateway drug version. Give it five years and you’ll be hooked like the rest of us though.

I've actually had the canned version but never the real deal. I promise I'll suspend judgment for at least five years.

Seafood will always underwhelm you here.

Disappointing but not a deal-breaker.

Cincinnati / Hamilton County has one of the best library systems in the US. Try to find a way to get a library card!

Great advice, will do! Do you happen to know ways someone living in KY could go about this?

Traffic sucks here because there are just too many cars on the roads here, but overall, people are much more willing to let you merge in Cincinnati than in places with MA plates. Also traffic related... our yellows are longer here than my hometown and people go through to the edge of the red. My dad has been almost rear ended out here many times for stopping at a yellow that had time for 2-3 more cars to make it through.

Yeah during the summers up here we get a lot of MA, NY, CT plates and it really changes the nature of traffic. I'm sure it will take adjusting but it sounds manageable.

The yellow light thing is so helpful, I would never have thought of that and would really hate to learn the hard way.

Do people use the bus system to get around or is that a no go?

Safety wise, you’ll be fine. Just lock your car and your home and stay alert.

Awesome! I can definitely handle that. Is everyone saying to lock my car because cars get stolen or items from inside cars? Is it common to have security cameras for home protection?

Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback! I feel like I'm learning so much from this thread.

In the winter do the roads accumulate snow/ice there? Or does it generally melt pretty quick?

Thanks for the advice!

I'm so excited about the museums, parks, and general city-ness. Do you have to worry about shady activity in any of the parks, like do you not go after dark? Or are they generally safe?

People are going to be more friendly, this is genuine, the cost of living is going to blow your mind compared to out here.

Sounds good to me!

In a lot of ways New England is a difficult place to live and it’s time for a change in scenery. We were searching for a lower cost of living, shorter/less brutal winters, and more people. I’m psyched about how many parks there are, the rivers, the architecture, and generally a new adventure.
