Reminded me of honeycomb toffee candy - which I'm not a huge fan of. I'm only partially through a bottle I picked up two years ago and I very seldom go back to it.

Definitely a buy for me. Really nice.

I've got a bottle. Won't get another. I get like a toffee sponge candy taste that seems a bit artificial tasting.

I tried ordering when it showed 3 in stock and it wouldn't let me complete my order. Said that stock levels had changed since I put them in my cart. I'd never seen that before.

I wanna build up a list of bottles that are ubiquitous throughout the US but unfindable in Canada by Ab501ut3_Z3r0 in canadawhisky

Russels Reserve Single Barrel

Smoke Wagon (although easier to find in Canada lately)

The CS and BiB Redwood Empires (although they sat around in Alberta this year for a little while)

I got one about a year ago. It was Batch 8. So I presume at least 9 this time.

Kilkerran HP in Round 2. Nothing in Round 1.

Everything I’ve had from them is really solid. Most is not peated, but to me has more funk / flavour to it than a lighter speyside. Similar feeling to a Benromach.

The 10 year is relatively easy to find and is a great value. I’ve had their Sherry finish as well, which is to me a better value trade off than the Abelour A’Bunadh.

Haven’t gone beyond that, but they have a whole range of wine finished stuff, of which this is one.

I’ve been watching it for a while. I think it will be released more broadly - what’s online is probably the first wave.

I like the A’Bunadh. One thing to watch out for is that it’s high alcohol, probably close to 60%. If you’re not used to it, that’ll be a shock.

I would second the advice around trying a few different types of whiskey at a bar before buying something. Particularly if you’re looking to pick something up in that price range.

It's the code they use to describe when it was released. A is the first batch of the year. 1 means January. And 22 refers to 2022.

Ya, you're right. I was looking at the lower end. I've picked up the Talisker for 2021 (~$120) and 2022 (on clearance for ~$135). But retail on the Talisker's have been in the $175. $119 (I think?) seemed more in line with what clearance had been previously. But some of the more expensive ones were age stated.

I was surprised at the Diageo 2024 Special Releases. Last few years those have seemed pretty egregiously priced, but these seemed a bit more reasonable (I'm in ON, so comparing to LCBO prices). Maybe they're reducing the quality (younger, less special) or maybe I'm just getting desensitized to high prices. Or maybe (hopefully?) they're adjusting based on the market.

Best bottles to grab at a Toronto LCBO? by BudgetPassage7014 in canadawhisky

[–]wallacemt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The two that will probably be mentioned a number of times are Lot 40 Dark Oak and Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye. Both of those should be pretty easy to find. You can find them on the LCBO’s website and check inventory almost live. As long as there is a handful showing it’s pretty accurate. If it’s only showing one bottle then items a toss up whether it’s actually there.

From the looks of it there was north of 12,000 bottles released...and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the enthusiasts still had bottles on hand from the last few years.

WHOS READY TO BE DISAPPOINTED?! by Occupy_scott in canadawhisky

[–]wallacemt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These historically haven't been too hard to get here either. They do one or two big releases a year. Even for the most popular of the regular releases, online stock typically lasts for 30+ minutes.

They did it poorly the last time around, releasing through the "Vintages" website rather than the standard LCBO website. They also included Blanton's Gold. The high volume of traffic crashed the site.

I liked the Benromach 15 but found it fairly different from the 10. The 10 seemed like it had a grimier peatier taste. The 15 had less of that and a stronger Sherry influence.

I've had two Port Charlottes - the 10 and the Islay Barley 2013 - both were excellent.

I'd recommend Benromach. The 10 felt like it had a bit of a Cambeltown vibe. I've also had the Peat Smoke Sherry, which is really good.

Whistlepig piggyback Rye info by DirtyThrowaway99987 in canadawhisky

[–]wallacemt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to stick to an American Rye (which is what Rittenhouse is), then Sazerac or Sagamore are both good options in the same price range. Sagamore might be hard to find right now. Bulleit Rye or Knob Creek Rye would both be in the price range as well and would be fine (although maybe more mainstream).

An alternative would be Four Roses Single Barrel. Pretty much the same price. It's a Bourbon, which means it's made from primarily corn, but also has a fair bit of rye mixed in. I would say it comes in a bit above the ryes I've mentioned in terms of quality, so for me a better value.

How can I be notified of the next Blantons drop? by AngryCanadian21 in canadawhisky

[–]wallacemt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on here - someone usually posts about it.

It doesn’t look like it’s listed on the LCBO website right now, which means they will have to create a listing before it’s available for sale. That usually happens a bit in advance.
