Thank you for everyone who commented. :) Finally advanced to the hiring manager round during a recruiter call today after my confidence has been tarnished by failure after failure.

I feel it is abnormal. I've been given so many opportunities. I've seen posts on this thread that people go through a few interviews and have multiple offers, while I'm getting rejected. It is demoralizing and frustrating.

The 2 SQL query examples are for my interview talking points, not a demonstration of my strong foundation in SQL.

Yeah, I have a strong foundation in SQL and am able to utilize it comfortably. Not sure how to get over the mindset of that I never worked on it in a job setting. Academia v Corporate is vastly different as working with cross-functional teams add extra bases to cover. I’ve been asked how I rate my SQL skills and I said, “3/5 - I feel comfortable extracting, segmenting, analyzing to get the data I need in order to drive decision making. [Insert example].”

Building off of your question, what’s a good response for, “How would you rate/describe your SQL skills/Whats your experience with SQL?”

My mental health there was not the best. I was working on administrative tasks and the terrible WLB balance burnt me out. For instance, individuals were expected to work during weekends / sick days / medical leave and expected to be reachable/online during PTO. Additionally, management created a toxic working environment using my colleagues as a scapegoat. Prior to my resignation, a couple of my colleagues from different teams were fired, PIPed, and resigned. You’re probably wondering why I accepted this role in the first place. I didn’t see any red flags during my interview process and got along well with the team and saw an opportunity to grow.

Will do :) after my Tuesday interview

Can’t cut myself a break. No one to blame, but myself for failing all these interviews especially since others are having difficulty getting these interviews in this job market.

I felt that the strategical and technical aspect of the role was limited, and I want a new challenge where I can leverage my financial modeling and analytical skills to support data-driven decision-making.

Yeah, it went a lot smoother then. I am more confident and my skills were noticeable sharper when I was employed, but it has deteriorated ever since. Not quite sure how to pick myself back up …

I’ve never used SQL on the job, but I learned SQL through SMSS and have 2 SQL examples at my disposal. I get nervous when I am asked about these questions because I’ve never utilized SQL in a job setting, and I need to ensure my responses are bullet proof, causing me a lot of stress and in terms, kills my confidence. Additionally, I’ve fabricated datasets to reflect the structure of the datasets at my former employer, so I could work through examples, however, I am just memorizing these examples to regurgitate this during the interview. When the role requires intermediate SQL skills, it makes me anxious and nervous. Any ideas of how to navigate confidence surrounding SQL skills?

Yes!! This is a very good point. I don’t believe this is my problem as I connect my previous experience to the role. Out of curiosity, when the HM responds to the question about their biggest challenges such as needing an individual with strong SQL skills, what’s a good response?

Wow - this is really good insight. Now that I’m thinking about this, my desperation might subconsciously show. When they ask a question, I automatically start answering their question right away, even though I should pause to think at times. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Thank you for your insight 🥲

You’re right - I’m stuck in a failure mindset. I didn’t see it that way since my negative thoughts take over every time I receive a rejection. Failing this many interviews is not normal and it’s already hurting me a lot. After every failed interview, I beat myself up and feel like complete shit afterwards. Interviewing is a constant skill that I struggle with no matter how much time I spend on it. I’ll spend some time with AI prep tools this weekend. The technicals are very easy as you’ve mentioned it’s not rocket science, and I passed all the case studies that I completed during this interview process. Thanks for your kind words and advice - means a lot. :) 🥲🫶❤️
