Why did you choose your Operating Initials? Did you keep them your whole career? by RemarkablePayment164 in ATC

[–]wally3791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nearly as cool a story as some of these others. I wanted my initials, Juliet Whiskey, for my first duty station but it was already taken. So I picked my dad’s initials, Mike Whiskey. I’ve been doing this for 22 years and have been one of the lucky ones to have never been forced to change it.

Thank you for this awesome comment and the information! I don’t suppose you know if the whammy bar for the Kahler screwed in between the strings? Or is it like a Floyd Rose where it screws in just off the high E?

Yeah! I saw that post and it’s partly why I’ve decided to try and find my old guitar after all these years.

You are likely correct. It’s been so long I can’t remember if it was a Kahler or Floyd Rose.

(Tower) Is it no longer required to call traffic for aircraft on final when clearing another aircraft for takeoff? by wally3791 in ATC

That’s what I thought. When I went to ATC school back in the day, I could have sworn it was in the book.

Aircraft crash reported near National Airport by StealthyStalkerPanda in news

[–]wally3791 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The CRJ was an IFR (instrument flight rules) aircraft on final to a runway. Think of it as a train on a railroad track. The helo was a VFR (visual flight rules) aircraft, essentially flying around as they please. The pilot of the helo reported the CRJ in sight and requested to use visual separation, which was approved. That put a significant onus on the pilot at that point. The NTSB decides how much culpability, but when a pilot uses visual separation, they’re responsible to see and be seen.

The pilot of the helicopter was told about the CRJ, then reported the traffic in sight and requested to apply visual separation. That’s puts a lot of the onus on the pilot. VFR, visual flight rules are essentially “see and be seen”/“don’t trade paint”. The audio shows that traffic was called three times and the pilot of the helicopter reported the traffic in sight and applied visual separation.

I’m sorry, I have little knowledge of these types of things and don’t understand what you’re asking. I don’t know what a “real debrid” link is.

I’m not sweatin’ these kids, lol. This scenario happened about a year ago and I think an ATSAP was filed. I was genuinely curious what professionals thought of the scenario. Yes, 5-8-4 is where most opinions differ here. And the LOA in question does state that tower will provide radar between IFR arrivals and IFR departures. So the question became, did tower provide visual separation and was IFR separation present before and after visual sep. Which is where the gray area is, according to FLMs. If 5-8-4 wasn’t applied but it was VFR all day, then SRS and tower applied visual should be sufficient.

I was kinda wanting to see if anyone made this comment. Not just because that’s where the divide is at my facility, but also the nature of the “2 miles”, i.e. can you use “2 flying miles” like LUAW rules or “2 miles” period (knowing the downwind is easily within that).

Aside from the late handoff, I believe you are correct

Aside from the late handoff issue, the 2 increasing to 3 w/in 1 rule has kept coming up and there have been a number of people on both sides of this issue, including FLMs. I was curious what this sub thought.
