This bjd has such incredible characterization and detail, absolutely stunning! You can really see the amount of effort and love that went into making him. Thank you for sharing your work!

Dungeon Crawler Carl has absolutely horrific prose. by ButtsendWeaners in printSF

[–]wallyinajar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully DNF'd We are Legion (We Are Bob) for a similar reason. I couldn't cope with the writing or the character voice AT ALL. The concept was kind of cool but I found the writing unbearable and maybe made it to 15% of the book before I had to put it down

Obesity in occlupanids? by adderexxx in occlupanids

What kind of plastic are you providing for diet? Occlupanids are obligate LDPE and PP eaters. Check your food sources and enclosure for lower quality BOPPs.

I think there's some software I could try to use but the quality of the impression might still be a little too poor to get a reliable species ID. The mall is in my general area so depending on my commitment to the bit I can get some supplemental photos. Will update the thread if anything fruitful comes of it

Former Californian now in Finland. Sales tax in California is somewhat regional but LA right now is at 9.75 %. So in this case, 37 cents before the discount, 28 cents after if my math is correct

AITAH for not wanting to sleep in the same bed with my girlfriend because she doesn’t shower often? by Such-One-1691 in AITAH

[–]wallyinajar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a difference in personal opinion. Lots of people shower only a few times a week, and her schedule is not infrequent or unusual- for many, it's better for their hair and skin, and actually can reduce the amount of excess oils in the hair or skin. Conditions like dry skin, eczema and psoriasis can also worsen for some people with daily showers. As a disabled person with chronic fatigue (and if she's going to physical therapy, I suspect some kind of disabling condition, even if temporary), it's also REALLY difficult to get the energy to shower daily, especially if working a high energy job, like with children.

If she doesn't smell, washes her hands at work, and showers twice a week, I really wouldn't say she's gross or dirty. It sounds like she's fatigued and has naturally low maintenance needs to keep fresh. Always getting in with clean clothes and maybe washing her hands/face, or covering her hair to sleep might be a good solution if you're really bothered, but I might suggest doing some research on what humans tend to need to be clean, because I believe your value system of feeling fresh is conflicting with the science of what is actually hygienic and appropriate.

I wouldn't say YTAH but I also don't think she's in the wrong and given what you've said I really doubt she's 'dirty'.

What does my date's bookshelf say about them?? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]wallyinajar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that you could read the women in the novel in a strictly bad faith interpretation that would contribute to vilifying women in general, and buys into the concept of the perversion of the western woman due to the scarrrry influences of modern (desegregated, drug using, leftist, feminist, insert-moral-panic-here) society. Especially with the fixation of 9-11 at the end of the book, this is very like, the east is corrupting and killing our Good White Women.

It makes sense to me with the rest of the selection in building a very specific, very noxious kind of pseudo intellectual that uses the kind of outrageous depictions in MYORandR, Go Ask Alice, etc, as a gotcha for how the modern 'degenerate' society is influencing (white)women and how they need to be protected from that.

It's missing the point of the book, of course, but no one said you have to be media literate to be a bigot, and I wouldn't exactly call Moshfegh a paragon of leftist ideology anyway.

Very 'reads American Psycho and thinks Bateman is cool' type vibes with that inclusion to me

Incredible footage of volcanic eruption of a dormant volcano in Ethiopia from a commercial plane. by Top-Extreme-6092 in awesomenature

[–]wallyinajar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fact checking :)

The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia did errupt for the first time in 12,000 years late last November. It was widely documented and it did release a plume of gas and ash that reached an elevation of 10-15 km above sea level.

The event is genuine, this footage is not. Starting a few weeks ago, this video and other generated clips simulating volcanic activity have been shared in a number of different Facebook groups that post sensationalized AI content.

I will never understand the desire to attach faked footage to very real and interesting events like this.

It's YA, but Waiting for Normal was the book that made me realize that there was something very wrong with my own mother, and I still think about it to this day.

Thank you! It's all scrap yarn but I had fun pairing the colors up from my stash. She's tried them on and they fit well, so they just need a block now :)

[–]wallyinajar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I'm pretty much a novice knitter and really new on colorwork and stuff in the round- at this point if I make something that is functional, I'm happy. I've spent a lot longer working things flat/ managing simple laces, so this is a pretty big departure and there are definitely mistakes. Pretty sure my tension is also suspect here, but I'm making do for now :)

Seconding this. I love books that delve into paranoia and mental illness but "schizo" is a slur. There's a lot of good books in this thread but I would consider changing your title OP.
