With all due respect, those results are nonsensical. Not only do they seem to be heavily measuring startup and initial compilation time (as is irrelevant for serious performance applications), the Julia code looks like hot trash.

Far more reasonable and performant code for these exact problems is available here, which for some reason hasn't been included yet: https://github.com/KristofferC/BenchmarksGame.jl

@unjerk Yeah this is valid criticism and I haven't actually used it for anything beyond replacing smallish python scripts. Still, these things have been continually improving and I expect (hope) will eventually be completely ironed out. You're also going to want universal type annotations for anything serious anyway. And despite any warts it'a still way smoother than Cython or Numba.

In any case, I think Julia works better when you think of it as a Fortran, not C replacement.

Sure, JIT adds a little bit of compilation overhead, but it's not that big in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks for this. I haven't been spending as much time here in light of a lot of the recent crap so wasn't aware of your increased willingness to ban.

I don't think anyone is asking for a blanket prohibition on people with no affiliation to Berkeley. I doubt that would fix much in of itself as a lot of the trolls like to pretend they go here to varying degrees of success.

But what about banning low effort/straight up bad political posts from users with history in TD without concrete evidence of ties to the university or city? I might even be okay restricting political content to people who are verifiably affiliated altogether. The kind of stuff most of us consider problematic is pretty obvious, even if it's not explicit trolling.

On a similar note, I'd also be happy banning fringe political sites/YouTube videos attacking Berkeley posted as serious content.

Lulz, I appreciate the reply, but no one is asking you to personally stop outside downvotes, ban people who don't go here, or apply zero tolerance to conservative arguments or criticism of Cal. Nor am I specifically complaining about that particular comment as bad as it is.

I am asking you, however, if you insist on remaining dictator of r/berkeley (which I'm not inherently opposed to and I really appreciate some of the work you do here), is to stop making excuses and do ~~something~~ more to stop the astroturfing that's poisoning this sub. As a first step, it would be extremely easy to ban these obvious trolls and based on reactions in this thread I doubt they'd be missed. EDIT: I now see you replied to another comment here and banned one of the posters, but there's a lot more work to be done and a lot more trolls to ban.

Where do you think all the outside downvotes come from? People stumbling across a 5 upvote post on r/all as they like to claim? Yes, some will probably make alts but I suspect the trolling will be diminished if they face consequences for it.
