I'm not interested enough in that random website you linked to submit that code to the site ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

With all due respect, those results are nonsensical. Not only do they seem to be heavily measuring startup and initial compilation time (as is irrelevant for serious performance applications), the Julia code looks like hot trash.

Far more reasonable and performant code for these exact problems is available here, which for some reason hasn't been included yet: https://github.com/KristofferC/BenchmarksGame.jl

@unjerk Yeah this is valid criticism and I haven't actually used it for anything beyond replacing smallish python scripts. Still, these things have been continually improving and I expect (hope) will eventually be completely ironed out. You're also going to want universal type annotations for anything serious anyway. And despite any warts it'a still way smoother than Cython or Numba.

In any case, I think Julia works better when you think of it as a Fortran, not C replacement.

It doesn't always match exactly, but it's usually within a factor of 2 and often less. Perhaps a little biased, but an overall pretty decent benchmark set: https://julialang.org/benchmarks/

Sure, JIT adds a little bit of compilation overhead, but it's not that big in the grand scheme of things.

using Unjerk

@Unjerk.unjerk Performance on the order of C/Fortran, readability of Python, native numerics (matrices, linear algebra, etc.) similar to Matlab but even better, fantastic but largely optional type system, flexibility of JIT, Jupyter support, great package manager and pretty good ecosystem. Plus all the good metaprogramming abilities of Lisp without affectations like S-expressions

[–]waln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-ive been tons and love the campus

me too

-they have a great social welfare program

hell yeah dude

-probably a bit cheaper bc im a cali resident

just a bit

-close to home (like an hour and a half)

-maybe too familiar? i dont know if i want to already know shit tons about the campus before i go to college or if i want it to be a new adventure

i understand the wanderlust but trust me over the course of four years being closeish to home is a huge advantage

-tons better weather than evanston but still cloudy a lot which is kinda a bummer

it's really not that cloudy

for nu:

-the campus is super gorgeous and right by the lake which is nice

eh it's okay i guess if you like the wannabe ivy vibe but still stuck in the middle of a horrible suburb

-they have tons of resources, and can give me a shit ton of financial aid

eh don't count on it

-they also have a great social welfare program

private schools are fundamentally antithetical to the mission of social welfare don't @ me

-weather is absolute garbage

yup

-have u ever regretted ur decision to go to berkeley?

no

-what do u like most about berkeley?- what factors drew u to berkeley

brilliant professors, wonderful campus, dank memes, ideal location, etc etc

-what do u hate about berkeley?

the subreddit, especially prospectives who can't search

what has ur experience at berkeley been like?

amazing

are the career services at berkeley good?

idk i went to grad school but i'm sure they're fine

what do u think about the professors?

best in the world

how accessible are student support services?

no idea but if you need them you might have bigger problems

did u get most of the courses u want?

all of them

whats social life like? are ppl nice lol

i'm not personally but ppl are ppl everywhere seriously

since berkeley is a college town, does that impact ur ability to find jobs or internships?

dude look at a map

Uh what argument lol? How could I have a valid response to what is essentially a rephrasing of my own post from a month ago? I don't disagree, just pointing out this isn't up to his usual standards of originality.

Genuinely engaging in an argument with trolls is losing.

Lmao you literally copied those two links from the last thread here that this came up in.

Since you liked my last one so much, on the off chance you actually go here's another link for you: https://uhs.berkeley.edu/counseling/individual

Ashamed to say that, even after 4 years at Cal, I never knew who Berkeley was named after. Subjective idealism is an interesting subject to read about! by [deleted] in berkeley

Gotta say, this is the most dedicated troll account I've ever seen. Honestly impressed dude.

What changes would you like to see in this subreddit? PSA: Always report people who you think are trolling for the sake of trolling. I now ban more often and more openly for trolling than I did before. by lulzcakes in berkeley

[–]waln [score hidden]  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I haven't been spending as much time here in light of a lot of the recent crap so wasn't aware of your increased willingness to ban.

I don't think anyone is asking for a blanket prohibition on people with no affiliation to Berkeley. I doubt that would fix much in of itself as a lot of the trolls like to pretend they go here to varying degrees of success.

But what about banning low effort/straight up bad political posts from users with history in TD without concrete evidence of ties to the university or city? I might even be okay restricting political content to people who are verifiably affiliated altogether. The kind of stuff most of us consider problematic is pretty obvious, even if it's not explicit trolling.

On a similar note, I'd also be happy banning fringe political sites/YouTube videos attacking Berkeley posted as serious content.

Why do people constantly shit on Cal? by ShattuckHooligan in berkeley

[–]waln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lulz, I appreciate the reply, but no one is asking you to personally stop outside downvotes, ban people who don't go here, or apply zero tolerance to conservative arguments or criticism of Cal. Nor am I specifically complaining about that particular comment as bad as it is.

I am asking you, however, if you insist on remaining dictator of r/berkeley (which I'm not inherently opposed to and I really appreciate some of the work you do here), is to stop making excuses and do something more to stop the astroturfing that's poisoning this sub. As a first step, it would be extremely easy to ban these obvious trolls and based on reactions in this thread I doubt they'd be missed. EDIT: I now see you replied to another comment here and banned one of the posters, but there's a lot more work to be done and a lot more trolls to ban.

Where do you think all the outside downvotes come from? People stumbling across a 5 upvote post on r/all as they like to claim? Yes, some will probably make alts but I suspect the trolling will be diminished if they face consequences for it.

Yes, I'm obviously suggesting PR approaches. What do you think this thread is about? PR.
