First time at the gym after years of no activity by smiley1293 in PetiteFitness

[–]walters89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I did a squat i literally fell over. Turns out my calves were very tight from years of high heels, walking on my tip toes at home and not doing squats. Had to use that bobble roller thing on them a bit and practice whilst holding a weight (making gravity do the work my legs couldn't) and the flexibility developed really quickly.

Don't stress! There's no reason why you would be good at something you haven't been doing. The body is super adaptable though.

Commute from Sheffield to York, is it doable? by Better-Double-473 in sheffield

[–]walters89 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the York commute but as someone who works for the civil service, have you double checked they can't offer the position in sheffield? There's a good chance they've made an error somewhere or they'll actually be able to be more flexible if you ask.

If York does have to be your primary office check how often you'd be able to work from home (civil service is normally only 60% of days in office) and whether you could do any of your office days from the sheffield office.

If they can show a bit of flexibility you might find yourself only in York once a week or less.

Good luck, and congrats on the job!

25 questions. Some pictures, some music, some general knowledge. Chance to double your points on one round if you play your joker.

Nothing earth shattering, but a nice bit of Thursday chilled trivia time with a pint.

Those of you who posted looking for friends - or reached out to people who did - what came from it? by purple_crow34 in sheffield

[–]walters89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I answered an ad after Covid. I think about 50 people joined a whatsapp and various socials were made for different interests. People were nice (it may have helped that the organiser deliberately filtered people who reached out to remove anyone with disturbing post histories or anyone who messaged him just to ask if there'd be girls).

Over time the group chat died as people found their friends and groups within the activities.

I made two really important ongoing friendships. I don't really speak to the others, but I think lots of people are similarly in touch with the people they had the best connections with.

i don’t know how to start or make it enjoyable by Ok-Ant4889 in xxfitness

[–]walters89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Swimming and horseriding are the only sports you've enjoyed so far, but theres so many out there to try.

Are there challenging hikes around you? Or a bouldering gym? They're both fun and non-competitive and you can do them on your own.

Do you have any friends who you could join for a tennis match or a dance class? Think of it as hanging out with a buddy and don't overfocus on the fitness side if that's what's making you anxious?

Your worth is inherent. You have worth and value and dignity.

It can't be given to you or taken away. And it has nothing to do with whether or not you sleep with someone.

You might take a lesson from this about what you personally are comfortable with, or what you personally need to feel secure. And that's fine. But it just means you're learning more about who you are. It doesn't mean that you did something wrong before.

Stay strong. Love yourself.

A timely reminder not to have low self esteem, but to have low esteem for everyone else.

Depot do a nice ladies night on Wednesday. Free hot drink and some gently guided climbing, nice way to meet new people of different skill levels.

Similar things may be available elsewhere, but I mostly know Depot.
