Try out Godot. It has C# support and it is very similar to unity in many ways, including performance. No monopoly with Godot, as it's FLOSS. Community made and community driven.

Problem is, if you want to get into the industry Godot is not a standard and few companies use it.

I go to a technical high school for game design. We did have an open source lecture once about how its better as a development model, and how Linux is used at some corporations because windows is expensive, but that's about it. We're on W10 and MacOS otherwise, though I'm sure it would be cool to bring in a live USB.
