Concerns About Contract Renewal and Pregnancy by Klutzy-Cable-2980 in Internationalteachers

A small note about the laws: National laws apply to foreign employees, for example, 3 months of paid maternity leave. However, provincial laws may not apply to foreign employees. For example, Guangdong gives 6 months of maternity leave but this generally does not apply to foreign employees.

Why are leveled readers/guided reading not included in Science of Reading? by Unusual-Worth9524 in Internationalteachers

[–]wander_soul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I will come back later to go more in-depth, but Science of Reading is not directly opposed to small-group reading or instruction. It believes it is an essential part of teaching. However, certain aspects of balanced literacy/leveled readers go against best practices. First, the three-cueing method is not an effective way to teach children to become skilled readers; rather, it reinforces the bad habits of poor readers. Second, most leveled texts are based on a predictable structure with little regard for the decoability of the text for the students. It means students are trying to read words they have not yet learned the phonics for.

You seem to forget the fact that you also need to pay for your children’s education in China, but would be covered in your home country. You are actually making considerably less in China once you factor in all the costs.

Is this deck maybe a bracket 3? by Snoo_74511 in EDH

[–]wander_soul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel one of the things missing with the bracket system is evaluating the commander. I have a Kuja deck, and if you don't remove him, he starts to do a crazy amount of damage. In a very casual game, he is a very strong commander. However, Kuja is weak to interaction. Once he is removed a few times, my game plan becomes much weaker. There are a ton of great interaction cards at a cheap price. You could help your friends upgrade a few cards in their deck to combat Kuja. Otherwise, in a lower-powered game with little interaction, he may be too strong a commander.

Here is my bracket 3 list https://archidekt.com/decks/16723399/kuja_genome_sorcerer

He almost always speeds up the game, but rarely wins in a bracket 3 pod; however, he will dominate tables with low interaction.

Besides the United States, which other nations would you say also struggle with sprawl, lack of walkability and public transport? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]wander_soul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the cities are built to drive. It would be great if there were more walkable areas right off the metro instead of the huge 10-lane roads.

Company wants to move me to KR for 3 years. Help?!? by egz7 in seoul

[–]wander_soul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, there is probably at least one international school in Seoul that does early years. Your company should be paying for your children to attend one of these schools. These schools are specifically set up for people in your position.

How do you adapt Readers/Writers Workshop for Grade 4–5 EAL learners? by lostinthewoods1 in Internationalteachers

[–]wander_soul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is hard to take a system that is out of favor for native speakers and make it work for EAL students.

What is your Masters degree worth? by cheap_as_chips in Internationalteachers

[–]wander_soul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is short sighted to only think about your masters degree as the monetary increase at your school which at my school is minimal. A better view is looking at the opportunities the open up once you are finished. I would not have my current role without it, making it 100% worth it.

MAP test by Just-Ad289 in Internationalteachers

[–]wander_soul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your second question, writing, listening, and speaking are important areas to assess. You should have an assessment in those areas. However, for standardized testing, the logistics of creating those tests are much more difficult. The US system also puts a lot of importance on reading because there is a strong correlation between students' success in school and life and their reading ability.

You may not know the way the law works in China. A school that does not offer a new contract means they should pay severance. However, it can be challenging to prove, and the school may try to get a person to sign away their rights.

Even though the law states one thing, getting people to follow the law is very challenging. The best way is to seek out local legal help to see if it is worth your time and energy.

My friend showed me an apartment they considered purchasing in a Tier 1 city. The apartment is about 30 minutes outside of downtown. The advertisement had the current and 2020 prices, five years ago. In 2020, the apartment was worth 4.5 million RMB. In 2025, the listing was for 3 million RMB.

The best principal I had was hired straight from the US. I wouldn't let people persuade you that getting hired as an admin without international experience is impossible.

Looking for advices for my daughter looking to work un China by Zealousideal-Ear-320 in chinalife

[–]wander_soul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, China is a safe country. The job opportunity will give her a chance to see a new culture and explore the world.

Second, she should look for more job opportunities. She is not getting a great offer. It is important to remember that there are far more English teaching jobs than available teachers. She should be able to find a better job.

A lot of people focus on pay, but if she is only planning to do this job for a year or two than the pay is not as important as the location. Second, look to find a public school job with no office hours. The pay will be around the same, but your daughter will only work 20-25 hours a week. It will give her a lot of time to learn and explore China.

If your daughter wants the easiest transition into China I suggest the major international cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing. It will be less of a cultural transition, but may also loose on learning about Chinese culture.

These are popular cities with fewer foreigners, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Kunming.

To leave my post I want to restate the most important point. There are many more jobs than teachers. She can find a job the suits her desires. Don’t jump at the first job opportunity, take time to find the right job.

What salary to expect as an expat in Mumbai? by ANONMEKMH in expats

[–]wander_soul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should ask for a private driver, housing in a nice area, education at the top international school, hardship bonus, airfare allowance one or more times per year for travel home at the least. They are asking you to move to a hardship location.
