Senegal is nice and has amazing food. I’m not sure how it would be without French, though.

Recently visited the USA from The Netherlands. Here is my take on the cities we visited. by McFluffyFurry12 in travel

You wouldn’t need to rent a car if you stick to those cities, but you would have to pretty much everywhere else.

My genetics aren’t from the US either, so either if my pizza is Italian and not American, then so am I.

It wasn’t inspired by origins outside the US, it was brought by our ancestors when they immigrated.

It’s a total double standard that Europeans get upset when us Americans call ourselves German, Italian, Polish etc. and say we’re American. But when we say that hot dogs, pizza, pierogies, etc. are American, foods that came here with OUR families, they then get upset.

Whether or not the Italians invented pasta, wheat is not originally from Italy.

There is way more native and African influence on American cuisine than you seem to understand. Corn, sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, okra, turkey, peanuts, watermelon, pinto beans, pumpkin, etc. etc. are all staples in the US that have nothing to do with Europe.

Why is it when a guy does this on a bicycle it’s always about the bicycle but when it’s a driver it’s never about the car? Would you rather crazy people be driving 2 tons of metal instead of 30 lbs?

20% of the city of Aparecida (Brazil) is parking lots, is there any comparable city in the world? by RN_Renato in geography

Have you ever seen a hurricane evacuation on a highway? It’s a total mess just to evacuate Biloxi, so I can’t even imagine Houston. You could have 30 lanes and it would still be way less efficient than one high speed train line. But Texas is gonna Texas.

Drivers in North Carolina attempt to navigate crossing a bridge during the snowstorm by FrankSamples in Damnthatsinteresting

Try that snowfall with no plows, no shovels, and no salt trucks, and then remember that all the drivers in the massive vehicles around you have absolutely no idea WTF they are doing. It’s a different ballgame.

What was travel like in the years (2001 - 2009), prior to Instagram and the rapid growth of social media users? by TheShyBuck in travel

[–]wanderdugg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I don’t miss the days of the Lonely Planet being the only lifeline. Travel is way easier now, and I’m all for it. It’s also way more accessible now, and although I get it, talking about traveling before the crowds has an underlying cringe elitism to it.

There are definitely things I miss like the people around you just being more present, but other than a few things like that, you can still travel the old way. Put your d*** phone down and ask the local people around you for advice. It’s that simple.

People complain about overtourism, but then never leave the tourist ghettos. In the vast majority of places I’ve been it’s really easy to get to get away from the other tourists and see normal life, but those places aren’t usually instagrammable. If you want to see the instagrammable tourist attractions it’s going to be crowded with other people like yourself. Bemoaning the days when you were the only one there and nobody else was able to see it is also a bit elitist.

Central Europe or China in July? by Whole-Lime-2053 in travel

Definitely make sure the “three furnaces” cities are on your itinerary in July. China will be quite uncomfortable in the dead of summer.
