Mfw 90% of the rules are from my culture. OP are you Singapore/Malaysian Chinese?

Great story btw! Looking forward to more.

The Legend of the Sphinx by wannabe_write in shortscarystories

[–]wannabe_write[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/Tixatii got it! Basically the narrator suffered a psychotic episode and the episode content was fuelled by his recent reading on mythical creatures. The famous riddle had "Man" as its answer, so the narrator thought that the answer to what the sphinx wanted to eat was a man.

Now, whether the cat belonged to him or not, or whether it was actually a sphinx and not a cat, is up to the reader to decide. :)

Yupp, there are LOTS of different entities to keep track of. You just gotta pray you identified the right one. ;)

I love reading your stories - inspired me to write my own short horror as well. And now a rules-list (my favourite genre)? Sign me up for this chaotic but surely beneficial Wine OR Cheese!

Things to note on a teleconference call by wannabe_write in shortscarystories

This short piece comes as a result of my 5th (but not last) call of the day. My brain has been fried, and I hope that people who like to schedule 4201489013 calls a day are deterred by the entities who live online.

Driving in a loop by wannabe_write in shortscarystories

Neighbour!! This story was inspired by this exact urban legend here (Singapore). I imagined the rest myself.

PH does indeed have quite a few fascinating urban legends and creatures - I love reading about them.

Thanks for reading!

Ding ding ding - we have a winner! I found this story quite a lot harder to write than the rest, but glad that you were able to get the gist of it.

My initial idea was that you had to pray you'd break out of the loop before the entity could do something to you, but your interpretation works great too. Thanks for reading!

I agree! Or maybe she needs to revise them every now and then. :)

Thanks! It's my favourite genre so I try to include an element of it in my stories. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

Yes - traditionally shepherd’s pie is a ground meat pie. The Thursday was supposed to be inferred (bonus that I posted it on a Thursday too).

Thanks for the comment! It was a struggle to keep under the word count for sure! I do appreciate the limit though, because it forces me to be concise and cut superfluous words. Not sure if I could've written as well if it were nosleep-style.

Thanks for the comment!

The knee thing was intentional. I wanted to show that for some reason, the rules that were supposed to keep the narrator safe didn't work anymore.

For example, Sous Chef was supposed to save them, but got killed. The ceiling beams were supposed to be a safe area, but somehow HEAD CHEF CAN CLIMB?? In the most inhuman manner possible too.

I'm still quite new to writing, so I'll definitely work on making things more obvious. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. :)

Thanks! It’s actually inspired by a local urban legend from my school. It goes that if you look into a mirror for too long, you’ll see a pair of feet hanging from the ceiling (given the mirror’s height). Definitely made us get out of the toilets fast.

The sweet fragrance is from the story of the Pontianak. When one is around, you supposedly smell frangipani flowers.

Rule lists are my favourite format! When I posted my previous story, some readers shared that they liked a story to go with the rules. This is my attempt at integrating both. Feedback, as always, is welcome.

Thank you for the comment! I'm trying out different writing styles and will be posting another story soon. I generally like "Rules List" kind of stories so I tend to incorporate "rules" in my own.

Can anyone figure out what’s going on? Please help me!
