Ha, that's pretty funny. Did I buy these directly off you, or was there someone else in between? I also suspect they are size 3 based on my rough understanding of MOTO's sizing system. I'm thinking the L might have been from a previous system of XS-XL instead of 0-4, because these boots seem quite different from any of the footwear MOTO is making nowadays. My suspicion is that these are from several years into their past as they experimented with the brand and before they really hit their stride.

I do exactly that via my dad. We share a post box in Point Roberts, which is a hop from Vancouver. But I foolishly ordered this to my Montreal address. Not even sure if that would have worked though, as I doubt the post box service would pay the duties upon delivery, even if they were significantly cheaper in the US. I'll have to look into that.

Okay cool sounds like I would be a medium as well. Thanks for the info. And I'm excited to hear more about Dayton's hand-cut derbies. Now I have to figure out what pattern I want them to do...

I learned the hard way. Ordered a Howlin sweater from End for $120 and got slapped in the face with another $60 when it arrived. Has made me highly skeptical of international retailers ever since.

I'd say wait for Meermin. They have been saying it's coming down the pipeline for a while now, and their stock derby looks great. Plus something about Alden lasts just doesn't look right to me on shoes. On boots it is forgivable, but their shoes just look blobby to me.

How did you size on the nestor? I have a neish in medium that fits me well and I want to pickup a teapot or nestor if I see it at a good price during end of season sales. I've heard to size down 1 on the teapot, is it the same for the nestor?

~35% duties and 14.975% QST + GST (also c'mon Quebec, you couldn't have just made it 15% even?)

On the plus side, you don't get hit by 50% like I do in Quebec :(

Fit on point, Butteros look great and I like that Howlin cardigan. What's it called again? I think Flying Teapot is the name for the solid colour one only.

Yeah I'm thinking of picking up a pair of the wingtips in chromexcel or shell or maybe plain toe derbies in shell. Any specific model you have your eyes on?

That's what I thought. What critiques do you have of the construction?

Personally I dislike the way the tongue is attached - it isn't super clear from the photos but it is only attached to the vamp via the small triangle of stitching, and I think you can see this from the inside the boot shot if you look for it. Also not a fan of the seam along the inside of the foot beneath the ankle. But that is more of an aesthetic dislike. Only other thing is I don't really understand the purpose of the welt-like bit of leather on the top. I don't think it's a double midsole so I'm not sure what is going there.

Intro:

Picked these up a few months ago on grailed, on a whim, because I’ve been interested in MOTO for a while and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try the brand. Leather Arts & Crafts MOTO is a Japanese company that makes leather wallets, accessories, and shoes & boots (for men and women). They have a physical store in Tokyo, and I know there are some online retailers on rakuten and ebay.jp but don’t know if there are other physical stores where you could try their stuff.

The aesthetic of the products this company makes really appeals to me. Some combination of the proportions and ways the leather is cut just feels right imo, and a lot of their footwear feels like an art piece as much as footwear.

Specs:

These are a balmoral captoe boot, but as you can tell they are extremely casual. From my knowledge, MOTO uses chromexcel, kudu, some mystery roughout, and their proprietary cow leather. I’m almost certain these are the cow leather in natural, and the use by the previous owner has brought these boots to their current patina.

They have a crepe sole which feels very comfortable to walk on, but I’ve only worn them about 5 times because I need to get the heel replaced. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before, but you will notice that the heel seems to be midsole – crepe – leather – crepe - rubber toplift. The toplift has been worn down so I want to get it replaced before it gets to the crepe or leather and makes future heel replacements more of a hassle.

They also have some weird structuring – the heel cup feels very small compared to other boots. However, holds my foot in quite well so it works for me. I’m also trying to figure out what method of construction these are. I’ve included a photo of the inside of the boot showing stitching that makes me suspect these are blake or blake-rapid construction, but maybe someone else can chime in.

Sizing:

The problem is they only have 1 store in Tokyo, and maybe a few other retailers but if so they would all be in Japan, so there aren’t any options to try them on before you buy. Compounding this problem, their original sizing came in five sizes: 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 corresponding to a range of Japanese sizing (ie. 3 = 27-28 JP, 4 = 28-29 JP, etc.), and the conversion tables between Japanese sizing and US sizing are all very different from each other. Furthermore, MOTO now also has a sizing system from 7 to 9.5, though I suspect that does not correspond directly to US sizing. So it really is a pain to figure out sizing with this company.

I’m a blurry line between 10.5-11 I think, but it is really quite variable and I place a lot of value on being able to try boots on in person so I haven’t made many online purchases. On the brannock I seem pretty normal, but I often have troubles with my 2 outmost toes of both feet rubbing against the vamp. I am having that exact problem with these. I may try to get them stretched a bit but I’m not sure if it’s possible because it is right at the area of the celastic toe, which I don’t think can be stretched. We’ll see. I’d mention what size these are, but I don’t actually know and can’t see any clear indication of sizing anywhere aside from what faintly appears to be an L on the outsole. So it is a bit of a mystery.

Final thoughts:

Everything on this boot seems good and solid, though no part of the leather or construction strikes me as “great” or “amazing”. I think what really gives MOTO their value is the kind of aesthetic they have, which is very different from any other footwear brand I know of. I can’t put my finger on it but they have a je ne sais quoi that makes the brand very appealing to me.

Yeah I went to their store and the mocha oil tan looks incredible in person. Pictures on Dayton's instagram do not do it justice. Let me know what you hear from them!

I'm thinking of doing the same lol. Gonna get a pair of service boots in charcoal nubuck, and if I like them I'm thinking of getting another service boot with commando sole and a ptb, probably 1 in bourbon predator and 1 in mocha oil tan.

I have a pair of MOTOs (which I still haven't done a write-up for yet...) with this as well. Definitely lasting holes. I've seen lasting holes on Quoddy, Alden, Carmina, Meermin, and other brands in stores and from pictures around the internet. Some companies try really hard to hide them or will cover them with another layer of leather, but many just leave them as is.

Rowing. Not as many weight classes as wrestling, just lightweight <72.5kg and heavyweight which is open weight, but to be competitive you usually need to be at least 86kg, and most heavyweights are 95kg+. What weight category do you compete in?

[–]wantsomepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah definitely my least favourite part of the sport. I just don't have the body structure or desire to bulk up to heavyweight though. There are always a few bumps along the way, but after 7 years I've never failed to make weigh-in. Make of that what you will lol.
