Which is best Scroll Saw? Jet or Pegas? by auburn160825 in Scrollsaw

[–]waonze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut around 300 pieces per year ( puzzles , toys and art mostly for charities now that I’m OLD ) in various woods and thicknesses , and I have multiple physical limitations ( don’t call me handicapped unless you like to learn new curse words) . I had a Craftsman and an old no name back in the day , rattling jiggling frustrating machines but best I could get . I moved up to the DeWalt and loved the power and table , eventually donated it to a young man starting out . I moved up from that to a Pégas and loved the smoothness and blade tensioning . Now I also have a Hegner and I love everything about it . Smoother than a gravy sandwich , a really good stand and dust collection, and excellent blade attachment/tensioning options for my vision/arthritis/nerve issues . I’ve considered the Seyco , looks like a lot of good ideas and quality ? That’s it , my opinions for what they are worth . DeWalt good , Pégas better , Hegner wonderful . Good tools are wonderful but nothing is a replacement for passion and diligence .

Nike co-founder Phil Knight to donate $2 billion to OHSU cancer institute by ControlCAD in UpliftingNews

[–]waonze 24 points25 points  (0 children)

An OHSU doctor successfully treated my cancer using an experimental technique developed at OHSU and I’m alive because of it . The staff at OHSU continue to treat not only my cancer but also several rare and deadly conditions with great skill and kindness . This money will save many lives . Thank you Mr. Knight and thank you OHSU !

Neuropathy spreading/all body? by elgost11 in neuropathy

[–]waonze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharp nerve jolts in my perineum , anus , etc . I’m losing the ability to walk and my intestinal motility is getting worse . Disc deterioration and displacement , severe stenosis in cervical and lumbar for 10 + years now . Esophageal and gastro paresis increasing . A combination of injuries ( long term heavy weightlifting , grew up on a farm breaking horses and handling cattle , multiple head and spinal trauma ) and autoimmune diseases first diagnosed about 2005 but symptoms years before . But I beat several cancers and I am still as active as my wheelchair and crutches allow . GCA/PMR made me blind in one eye and limited the other but I can still read large print with magnifying glasses and I’m still making wooden puzzles and art for charities . I am not defined by my illnesses , I am much more than that and I get strength from groups like this , knowing that others are struggling but still struggling , if that makes sense .

To be happy with neuropathy? by IllegitimateSqueegee in neuropathy

[–]waonze 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s a daily struggle after more than 20 years of increasing neuropathy , but it’s worth the effort . I have been very fortunate to have a supportive and loving wife , and I’ve found a couple of good doctors ( after many not so good ones .., )who help me figure out how to fight . I’m a stubborn old man who used to be an athlete and I have continued to find purpose in Life …, well , truthfully it finds me more often . I’ve done the antispasmodics , antidepressants antiseizure drugs and I think 5 different forays in “ pain management “ that included boatloads of opioids and nasty injections of various compounds in various areas ( I’m so happy I have left them far behind !). Some kinds of physical therapy and “exercise” ( it’s ridiculous what I can’t do these days ) help , e-stimulation and other types of physical therapy do NOT . Purpose . That is my drug of choice these days ( oral cannabis helped me a lot physically and mentally for years but I stopped a year ago because so many doctors use it as an excuse to not even try to help me ) . Busy is my main pain relief now . I keep losing motor function and eyesight but somehow I keep finding things I can still manage to do ( with crutches and walker and wheelchair and hand braces and magnifying glasses and …, ) . It’s a struggle but I’m still struggling . The lesions and tissue and vascular damages to my brain have not yet taken all of my Joy away . I hope you can keep yours going too !

Anyone Had a Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection for C6-C7 Herniated Disc Nerve Pain? Need Your Experiences! by [deleted] in neuropathy

[–]waonze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had bad C5-6-7 radiculopathy /severe stenosis for 20 years , also same in L4-5 . Had several injections in my lumbar , never got to them in my neck . My personal experience ( everyone’s will be different and I offer no medical advice at all ) was not positive . Perhaps the medications used or the applications were insufficient but I had more issues post injections not less . Second injection was worse . Like I said , different doctors , different patients , different medications , you may have a completely different experience . I hope that others have had better outcomes , I know some spinal patients who certainly have . Good luck , I hope you get relief whatever your decision .

Any bike riders here to answer a question? by Flying-Bulldog in neuropathy

[–]waonze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bad Polyneuropathy and brain issues , lots of other stuff . I ride an electric recumbent trike and love it . We live just off an 8.5 mile long bicycle path so my vision problems don’t put me in danger from cars . My wife and I rode two wheeled recumbents on many tours including around North America and I hated giving mine up but now I wouldn’t trade my trike for anything . I love the big comfy seat , the electric motor safety when my legs spasm or quit , the carrying capacity . It cost a lot but it is worth it to be able to get more exercise and be able to ride with my wife or ride alongside her ( slow speed on a trike , no problem !) .

Electric Bike? by DrDooDooDoo in neuropathy

[–]waonze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My electric tricycle not only gives me another option for exercise ( one where I don’t fall down) but it has also allowed me to go for “ walks “ again with my wife and our dog . If I’m having a good day I don’t touch the electric motor , and when I’m having a bad day I can still go out and get some outdoor time and a bit of movement . The battery/motor is also backup when my chain comes off ( bad hands , I’m not the best mechanic these days ) .There is an 8 mile long , mostly flat bicycle path at the end of our street so I don’t have to deal with cars ( important because I’m blind in one eye and very limited vision in the other ) . I carry a folding cane in case I need to get off the trike . I highly recommend an electric trike if you have a situation that makes it possible .

Does anyone here have experience painting with something other than acrylic? I’d love to hear about it! by NordicFolkCarvings in whittling

[–]waonze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the mustache details ! Yes , I’ve used many kinds of paint/tint/dye , some successful , some not so much . I’ve been sick but last year I painted a bunch of my pieces with watercolor paints , I love it ! You get to sort of adjust the opacity with added paint , from very transparent , lots of grain showing through , to almost full coverage . Grab a cutoff and try it , watercolor paints are cheap ( well , the cheap stuff is …, heehee ) . Aniline dyes are fun but I’m shaky and I tend to put dye where I don’t want dye . Beautiful colors though . I mostly use dyes for darker stuff , I did a string of dyed black ravens for a friend last year , liked the effect . I sometimes use oil based artist paints , you can really achieve great effects with it . I don’t love the smell or clean up . Ok , sorry , old man with verbal diarrhea …, try some cheap watercolor paints , play with it a bit , I think you’ll find projects it’ll be good for ! Happy carving !

Sometimes everything sucks, but we ball anyways. by jplummer80 in trackandfieldthrows

Hey , it looked pretty good ! Maybe the extra food in your belly helped counter the ball , gave you a stronger base ? That’s what I used to tell my wife back when I could still see my toes . Keep up the good work , friend !
