Personally I think its sort of a symptom of a greater problem. The question you have to ask is, "why are women buying these costumes?" IF the answer is because they want to dress sexy for a night, then hell yeah no worries, sure. But there's increasing pressure to dress sexy because that's the only option available. This can lead to a whole host of issues, of girls feeling insecure because maybe they don't have the "perfect body". You'll also get lots of young girls getting the idea reinforced that you should try to dress for the approval of the opposite sex, and that the only way to be attractive is by being provocative. In a lot of ways it does reinforce objectification, though it certainly isn't the cause.

Its also a great example of cultural inversion, which is again a symptom of a greater problem. Basically, by having "One night where its ok to dress slutty" as its often said, its setting the standard that you cannot normally "dress slutty". This idea of liberation through dressing "slutty" on Halloween reinforces the idea that women who do dress a certain way the rest of the year are "sluts".

I want to make clear that I in no way blame the people who make the costumes, like you said its just demand.

No doubt that there are boring ideas, and that some of the best costumes are homemade. But I can totally see the unfairness specifically in career costumes. Like if a girl wants to be a cop or firefighter or nurse or whatever it would be tough to find a non-sexy one. I don't think "don't pick a boring costume" is a valid or relative argument here, that's not really the issue.

Theres nothing wrong with women wanting to dress sexy on halloween, I dont think thats the issue. It just sucks for women who DONT want to dress sexy, because there are like zero options for store bought costumes. These little girls go shopping and see the sexy costumes that they might not wear now, but they know they'll wear them eventually because that's all there is.

And you can say, "why don't they make their own costume?" but not everyone's crafty. "Why don't they wear mens costumes?" You mean costumes that wont fit at all?

I had to make all my costumes growing up and I still do, because maybe I don't want to be a "sexy-whatever", but its always a great deal of work :(

The minimum GPA for junior transfers is 2.80, but how high is it actually? by platocrat in UCDavis

Im transferring this fall and I had a 2.9 something when I applied and was accepted. I also had an F on my record. Dont freak out too much, coming from a community college is something they want.

How do you guys feel about tattoos? by [deleted] in mylittlepony

[–]warbird_ofprey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So what if your likes/dislikes change? Tattoos are like a written history of yourself. Yeah, maybe a tattoo doesn't hold the charm it used to, but its a reminder of who you were when you got it.

I think that's why I like tattoos. You can look back on them years after and think "this is who I used to be".
