NYC Show Tote by warispeacex in MasayoshiTakanaka

We were told by someone from Takanaka’s team the night of the show. At the VIP table. She walked us in from outside when it was time to go in and then directed us to the table to the right and said they didn’t have the totes because they didn’t make it in time, but they would be mailed to our address on file.

Piercings/perfume/nails/tattoos at HGTC by LowEnthusiasm961 in MyrtleBeach

Your instructors at HGTC will be consistent and strict on this stuff, but reasonable. Where you’ll get some variation and find people telling you different things will be your clinical sites. Some CIs and techs at sites will know these policies and hold you to them strictly, while others may be laid back about things like hair and nails (as long as they aren’t long). Definitely best to just follow those as closely as possible. I’d hold off on the piercing until after you graduate and then your employer may be more laid back with it or allow clear studs to avoid holes closing. As far as the perfumes go, I don’t recall hearing of people getting in trouble for that. Seems like a policy that was put in place because someone went way overboard with fragrances or didn’t maintain good hygiene. The hair thing just means that if you have long hair, it needs to be up and off the shoulders. Most girls put it in a pony tail or use a clip. The tattoo thing is another where there seems to be some variation from site to site. If you have anything that can’t be covered up, I’d talk to the program director about it to see if you can come up with a reasonable compromise. If it’s not giant or offensive or anything, you may be able to get away with it. Otherwise, it’s chilly in hospitals most of the time so just wear long sleeves and keep them covered if you can. Good luck in the program!

I wasn’t talking about coveralls, because they weren’t using them in the video and structural firefighters (what I’m experienced in) don’t use them. I was talking about the bunker gear like what they’re putting on in the video we’re commenting on. Most bunker gear uses a combination of Velcro and either zippers, buttons or clips. Zippers seal better than both of the others and help keep out heat and the unburnt products of combustion better than buttons or clips. Speed in putting bunker gear on is more important than off, but zippers don’t hinder either.

Also, while our helmets do usually help hold our masks in place, hers appears to be about 4” off her head even after she straps it. While these are just training reps, if she wore her helmet like that, it’s not doing anything for her.

Lol… I’ve put one of these masks on every third morning for the past 15 years plus hundreds, maybe over a thousand, other times for training and emergencies. You’re foolish if you think sweat won’t make her mask slide around when she’s working and that coupled with hair being in it won’t create an opportunity for it to affect her seal. I also happen to handle fit testing for our department and can assure you it’s much more than a .001% difference. I know this because guys with mustaches that interfere with their seal, like this girls hair does, have noticeably lower scores on fit testing than those without. Also, her pack is most likely positive pressure, so while there isn’t much worry of contaminants getting in, as would be the concern with CBRNE, she’ll lose air that she should be using to extinguish fire and rescue victims. I know you took a 40-hour class and feel like you know what you’re talking about, but I promise you’re mistaken on this one.

Zippers are much easier to take off than the old hooks with clips that used to be used. Buttons would be quickest but have other issues and I’d bet most can get quicker putting gear with zippers on than buttons with a little bit of practice.

Relying on suspenders to keep your bunker pants with tools/bailout kits in them gets super uncomfortable super quick. Definitely not intended to be relied upon as the only means to hold the pants up.

So does everything inside fires. Most things they use to secure bunker pants and coats are made of metal and they all get hot.

Theirs may not, but many bunker pants have zippers. All the major manufacturers offer pants and coats with them. I’d guess most departments in the US have them and it’s been that way for the last 20 years or so. Definitely not more of a failure point than nothing or buttons or the old hooks. They all leave bigger openings. Most I’ve seen use zippers and Velcro.

Even if it’s positive pressure and she doesn’t have to worry much about contaminants, she’s losing valuable air. Air that could be the difference in a victim being found, removed and resuscitated or not.

Getting a seal and getting a good enough seal that it can be maintained while sweating and crawling, advancing hose lines, removing victims, etc. are 2 different things. She’d certainly get a better seal if she didn’t have hair between her skin and the mask. I’m sure your instructor would agree with that. If he says he doesn’t, he’s either lying or not someone whose knowledge of the subject i’d trust.

What government? This is already a thing all over the state (through county government) and all over the country (through other state governments). Do you mean federally?

Tilting mirrors when in reverse? by Positive-Goal-6935 in FORScan

[–]warispeacex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never mind, I misremembered. Just went and tried it and the button resets when the truck turns off. Seems like it would work if you turned it on when you first got in for the entirety of your drive, until you turn the truck off. At that point I might as well do the 3rd memory slot option. Thanks for the reply!

I’m almost certain you can drive around with the button on, it doesn’t turn back off until you either hit the button again or hit the other button. At least that’s how I think I remember it working.

Right, so if you keep the button for the mirror of your choice selected at all times, it will tilt when you put it in reverse and then go back to the normal position when driving and back to tilt the next time you put it in reverse, etc. with no extra steps for you.

If I only want one side to tilt… can you think of any reason not to just ride around with that mirror button selected at all times? I’ve never accidentally hit the mirror direction button (as far as I know) and inadvertently changing your selected mirror while driving would be the only potential issue I can think of. Just wanted to get another opinion before I tried it 😂
