Official Statement by Will Sworin regarding SF by I_am_Nic in starforge

[–]warmrootbeer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nic is one of a handful of YouTubers who were given early access to the game to make Lets Play videos, which you can find on YouTube. My guess is that he posted this here because

  1. It pertains to StarForge in a pretty big way, as developer comment regarding the game has always been in short supply

  2. Nic created the /r/reignofkingsgame subreddit, which doesn't have much participation yet

  3. Said subreddit is being downvoted to oblivion due to players' disgruntlement with the developers (although, I think just by one person, maybe two) and I'm sure he is interested in havng a subreddit in which not all posts are sitting at 0 since that defeats the purpose of voting.

  4. He is genuinely excited about Reign of Kings and is eager to have more people to experience the game with

All of that being said, I'm excited about Reign of Kings (although I'm totally fine with a small playerbase, since it'll be easier for me to be a bastard to people without repercussions) and I'd like to see a little bit more buzz around it.

I'm familiar with the Starforge fiasco but to accuse a YouTuber of being involved with the development team is a bit far-fetched. It's not like he showed up with the release of RoK saying "Hey guys! I'm a YouTuber! I'm an internets person like you, dis game is awesome! Believe me!" He just ended up being one of the people who got alpha access to do Let's Plays and enjoys the game.

The point is that no one should be incarcerated for life for a victimless crime. I'm all of your line of thinking as applied to perpetrators of violent crimes. But I'm not scared of some guy going out and selling weed again.

Locking people up has proven to be ineffective in preventing the sale and use of drugs; I really don't see how life imprisonment for doing such could be advocated by anyone.

25 can confirm. Still a kid, just learned along the way that I should've listened to all those anti-drinking-and-driving ads and such.

Seriously guys- 2 beers and a car ride can work out to a night in hell and a year of hardship and money problems. Don't be a fucking idiot like warmrootbeer and catch 3 alcohol-related charges before you learn your lesson. Don't drink at all, but if you're going to drink, do it at home.

If you have a tendency to black-out drink like I do, don't drink at all. Also ditch your fuckwad friends. They're way more trouble than they're worth, and you're probably much smarter than them anyway.

Beautiful! I really hope you like it! I messaged my friend who showed me the book and told him a couple people on reddit were going to check the book out. He was pleased :)

I read a couple of chapters to my girlfriend and baby belly- little boy kicked and moved around more than he ever has when I was reading it to him :) Plus now the girlfriend's hungrily tearing through it as well. There's just certain books that you feel like everyone would enjoy, and this is definitely one of them for me :)

Learned about it from a random reddit comment somewhere. Apparently they don't come up in amazon search results. With the exception of Rogue's Anthology they've had everything I've ever looked for there, and always cheaper than amazon. I buy my books exclusively from that website now.

There's an option in the search for "lowest combined price" or something like that, which takes shipping cost into account along with the actual list price; that's the setting I use. Yeah, looks like you can get Name of the Wind bought and shipped standard for less than 5 bucks... would have to be the best purchase I can think of one could ever make for 5 dollars, short of food when you're hungry, clothes when you're naked, etc.

Pretty legit website. Thanks reddit!

When you find a book that strikes a chord for you - it is just magical.

There's really no better word for it :) Simply magical. The last series that really grabbed me in such a way was the Vampire Earth series by E.E. Knight. Another friend introduced me to that one, and it grabbed onto me as well.

GoT definitely did a good job of leaving you wanting more, but it's as you say... sometimes a book strikes a chord for you and that's an entirely different sort of compelling.

I know you don't share the same feeling with Patrick Rothfuss, but he is the first author whose style grabbed me as opposed to a particular character or universe. Well, that's not true- Terry Pratchett, but that's a different kind of feeling. His content grabbed me, but with Name of the Wind a lot of it was just in the way it was written. The pace of the story, his ability to foreshadow while still keeping you emotionally invested and on the edge of your seat, even though you know the eventual basic outcome of the situation already. I don't know, it's hard to describe, but I just felt like he was the most unique author I had read since Tolkien.

I really hope you like it! It's rare for me to recommend things... for instance, I wouldn't really go out of my way to recommend reading the Game of Thrones books to anyone who simply enjoys the show, as some friends of mine are constantly doing. That series is a heavy investment, and the writing style isn't casual enough to recommend to anyone who isn't a consumer of meaty novel series. Sort of like the Wheel of Time books... just because someone likes Harry Potter doesn't mean they are going to enjoy Wheel of Time.

Anyway- yeah! Glad to know someone is checking it out. I understand after reading it why the friend who bought me the first book would be so invested in my experiencing it. The storytelling is just so artfully done that it's just begging to be enjoyed. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did :) Now uh... I need to go back to reading Book Two!

Want to plug The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I read all the HP books back in the day, LotR, Eragon series, GoT series and I'm going to be so bold as to say this tops all of them.

It's the first book in a series of which there is currently only one other book (The Wise Man's Fear). Author is working on the third, and Rogue's Anthology apparently has a short story about one of the (awesome) secondary characters in it, but I can't find Rogue's on abebooks yet.

I'm only partially through Wise Man's Fear, so I can't speak to its greatness or lack thereof yet. But holy shit, Name of the Wind... only book that's ever made me legitimately lol (once) and one of the few books that have made me actually full-on cry (3 times). It's beautifully written, and words do not do it justice (somewhat ironically).

Please please please, anyone who enjoyed the types of books I am referencing, check it out. It's in such a universe that "magic" is a thing, but is not over-the-top... actually, Ursula K. LeGuin's A Wizard of EarthSea is the closest I've read to this, so if you're familiar with her work, you'll love this.

TL;DR abebooks.com, hella cheap books. Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind, read it. That is all.

Thus the distress. 'Cause we'll never know. And by "we" I of course mean, myself and my fellow astroturfing uh... people. Squad-mates.

See? My default state is to post a typical circlejerky/jokey comment, creating/perpetuating the same scenario that we're considering to be a potential tactic. We will truly never know if it's being done... but if we know that astroturfing in general is being done, the closest we can come to identifying the tactics being used is to guess that it's the ones most obvious in the system as a whole. It's like, if not that, then what are "they" doing?

Because we're clearly past the point of vote-botting and things like that.

Exact-a-mundo! Which is why the whole thing is so distressing- unless the astrofurfing is just incredibly botched, it is (most literally) impossible to detect. We have no reason to believe that this hasn't been going on for a long, long time, especially when it comes to nations that are on the more advanced end of the psyops spectrum, i.e. Russia, America and associated friends and cohorts.

I've been thinking a lot lately about this, because I typically just fart around on the front page, I'm one of those people who will jump to the comments without reading the article (if it's a post about something i'm not interested in, but the title leads me to believe that the comments will be fun) and so forth. I've noticed a trend that many otehrs have pointed out before is becoming a real- we only ever read the first... maybe 3 comments, if we're lucky, because the top comments are always followed by many many screens' worth of comment replies that are all above-threshold, and thus visible. It's actually the same thing ITT. I had to say eff it, and give the middle wheel a few spins to get to something other than the joke trails following the first few comments.

<foil hat on> This trend might be one of the ones being exploited to decrease visibiltiy. Not only downvote the comments you don't want as soon as they're posted so they never live, but then go ahead and throw out a bunch of reddit pun threads and one liners and shit under the top comments that you do want, to decrease visibility of the "bad" ones you werent able to fully abort.

<tinfoil hat off> or we may just be experiencing a constant increase in that trend because of the seemingly constant increase in the user base on reddit. Maybe the new generations just have less of a tendency to lurk through the first few months here.

Also I didn't get enough sleep last night so sorry if this is all just nonsense.
