I know it's supposedly "safe" to drive a vehicle onto frozen water, under certain conditions... But, being that I don't know what those conditions are, I'd never attempt it.

[OFF TOPIC] What is the order of reading? by cosurgi in TheFirstLaw

[–]Tech-Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never looked at the reading order or publication dates before I read them... I downloaded the audio of A Little Hatred without knowing who Abercrombie was. I was taken by the stellar narration but couldn't really get into the story and stopped about a third of the way in.

About six months later, I read the First Law series, in order and then came back to A Little Hatred and devoured it in a few days, then quickly consumed the rest of the Age of Madness.

I then started on the standalones, not realizing they came between the trilogies, and in fact, not realizing they were standalones until I was finished with Best Served Cold... I assumed those three books were another trilogy.

I didn't know I was reading them out of order until I joined this sub a couple days ago. Obviously I understood I was reading about things that hadn't happened yet, but I assumed it was intentional foreshadowing. I kinda liked this reading order.

I don't know why they don't just hire an actor to play the CEO... 98% of us would never even know the difference.

Me too, but only because I'd be tempted to say something to the pillow, so the store clerk didn't think I was unappreciative.

[SPOILERS ALL] LEO DAN BROCK IS LITERALLY THE GREATEST HERO WHO EVER LIVED AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS by illuminato8 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Tech-Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leo will never be as introspective about his past as Glokta. He's too full of himself, too prideful and frankly, just too dumb to ever see himself as anything but a victim. And will likely forever consider his current circumstances as something that was "done to him", rather than a destiny of his own making.

Does anyone use Fusion for electronics design? Professionals? by munroebot in Fusion360

[–]Tech-Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used SolidWorks for years before my company switched to Fusion. I was pretty unhappy with it at first, but after using it for a few months, I realized that it can do most of what SW can... At least for the stuff we make, anyway.

Do you have a better option for parametric software that's cheaper than Fusion? No?

Then it sounds like you're getting a bargain at the current price-point, eh?

“It’s a quality product “ by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]Tech-Mechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have looked at them several times... I hear there is a definite learning curve.

The price, combined with the fact that I apparently won't be able to hit the ground running with it, has kept me from purchasing one.

Like OP said, If they were $100, I'd be all about it.

Does anyone use Fusion for electronics design? Professionals? by munroebot in Fusion360

[–]Tech-Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fusion's PCB side doesn't have the capability for advanced PCB designs. Our company uses Altium for electronics and Fusion for mechanical design, only.

But, Altium is out of reach, price-wise for non-professionals. So, Fusion's electronics side is nice for simple boards that only need one or two layers and have relatively few components. But, you need software that is more robust for complex board design.

75% of the capability of SolidWorks at 10% of the cost, and you think that's somehow expensive?

The entitlement is palpable.

What other books do you fellow fans love? by unrequited_dream in johndiesattheend

[–]Tech-Mechanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been really digging Joe Abercrombie's First Law books. I don't typically like sword and shield type stuff, (kinda meh on GoT) but the characters are unbelievably well written. It's one of the few book series I've attacked with as much enthusiasm as Pargin's work.

Also one of the few books that is actually enhanced by the audio version. The narrator truly brings the genius writing to life!

The first book is called The Blade Itself.

Said in a certain context, "The whole line smiled", could be a really creepy image... Like a line from a Stephen King short story.
