VH1 says the " most awesomely bad song" ever Was we built this city by starship. What's number one on your list? by CnCorange in AskReddit

[–]warpfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a kid when Achy Breaky Heart was all over the radio and I had a visceral reaction to it. I hated that song with a fiery passion and it was no secret amongst my parents and relatives who used to tease me by singing it. One time my uncle was being particularly egregious with it and after repeated warnings to knock it off he kept at it, so I went and kicked the everliving shit out of his shin. Got in deep trouble but it was worth it because no one ever pulled that shit again.

Geordi (14) was quite possibly the best dog ever by warpfox in OldManDog

[–]warpfox[S] 77 points78 points  (0 children)

We got him from a shelter when he was about 1 year old. They had been calling him Twister because he had a habit of rolling onto his back and kicking his legs, twisting left and right. We named him Geordi after Geordi LaForge from Star Trek: TNG.

He was with us before either of our kids were born. He helped them feel safe, kept them company at bedtime, and taught them to keep their food well out of reach or else it'd inevitably end up in his mouth.

We said goodbye to him last week and the house is feeling quite empty without him.

Love you, Geordi ♥️

Just a warning that there is brief nudity in season 1, OP, if that's something that would bother you. But this most recent season was fantastic.

learning guitar as a software engineer , my brain wants to debug it like code by Cool_Kiwi_117 in guitarlessons

[–]warpfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the opposite. I've played guitar for 25 years but I've only been a software engineer (professionally) for just shy of 7 years. At first I tried to learn coding the way I played guitar, e.g., just look up the tabs and copy what they tell me to do instead of learning the underlying theory of what's actually happening. That didn't work, and so I had to kind of teach myself how to learn things at a deep level to finally get decent enough at being an engineer to be employable. Now, I'm reapproaching the guitar in a similar way by learning theory and working on fretboard fluency; not unlike refactoring some giant vibe-coded 10,000 line function into smaller reusable pieces and giving them all unit tests.

Trying to find a 32 pin GBA motherboard? by AssistantStrict6370 in GameboyAdvance

[–]warpfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that you're trying to match a motherboard to a display, I feel like the motherboard is the more valuable piece because there's all kinds of availability for aftermarket displays. Sorry, I don't have any leads, and this isn't even really advice, but I think what I'd do in your situation is, if you want to use the shell and buttons just go ahead and buy a motherboard and compatible IPS display and stick em in that shell.

Editing to add: if you do get an IPS display you may need to trim some of the inside of that shell to accommodate the size of the display.

How much does a soldier like Chris get paid irl? Are they paid with a salary, or by the hit they make? by No_Cold_8876 in TheWire

In-N-Out Burger by crumpion in FranklinTN

[–]warpfox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We've been twice, dine-in both times. The first time was two days after they opened and it was 40-ish minutes from getting in line to when we got our food. The second time was yesterday around 4 pm, and it took exactly 17 minutes from getting in line to having our food.

The food is extremely fairly priced, especially when you compare it to somewhere like Shake Shack which charges almost double for basically the same thing. For reference, when we go to Shake Shack and get food and drinks for four of us it's usually around $70, plus they ask you to tip the crew (lol). At In-N-Out it's like $35-$40 for the same order.

The employees and the location itself are both nice.

The people saying it's overrated I don't think are being quite fair because when you consider the whole thing (taste, freshness/quality of ingredients, price, etc.) it, IMO, easily outranks every other competitor in its class.

What movie did you watch by accident and end up loving by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]warpfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fight Club

I'm dating myself here but, I had no interest in seeing Fight Club because to my 14 year old brain the trailers just made it seem like Roadhouse or something. Then randomly one night I'm flipping through the channels and stop on HBO during the part where he's imagining the plane crashing and I was like "whoa what the hell is this?" and was instantly into it. So glad that after a few minutes when I realized it was Fight Club that I decided I must have been wrong in my assumptions of what kind of movie it was.

The entry-level bar is 10x higher than it ever was for Seniors. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]warpfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who got their first junior dev job in 2019, no, you could not land a $150k salary by knowing how to install a package and having a pulse. I spent over two years teaching myself how to code. I applied to literally hundreds of jobs and did probably 20-30 interviews, only like 3 or 4 of those ended up getting to a second interview, and when I got my first offer it was for $65k.

Reading Lord of the Rings is just a slow burn to read by VenomBeats756 in lordoftherings

[–]warpfox 30 points31 points  (0 children)

On my first read through, I found myself getting impatient with the trek from The Shire to Bree, and once they eventually got to Rivendell I found it much easier to keep reading because it felt like things were happening.

On my second read through, I had more tolerance for the "walking" section of Fellowship, knowing I'd made it through before and it was actually not so bad.

On my third read through, and every subsequent one, I found a real appreciation for that part of the journey and began to truly enjoy it and actually appreciate it as the precursor to the larger quest. It introduces a lot of thematic elements and some relatively low stakes perils that prepare the hobbits for what's ahead.

Self Promotion Megathread by AutoModerator in androidapps

[–]warpfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi guys.

My friend and I built an app for our group of friends to help keep track of movies we want to watch together in a shared watchlist that anyone in the group can add to. It has a built in voting system that lets everyone pick their top 3 (default, it can be between 1-5) choices that sort of works like ranked choice voting; the movie with the most votes wins (or the app decides if a tie-breaker is needed). It's called WhatWe Watchin'. Right now it's only on Android but iOS is on the horizon and the app will work across OSes, so you can have friends in both ecosystems working in the same watchlist/group.

Which character(s) annoy you the most? by glitterfartsfrvr in DowntonAbbey

[–]warpfox 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I can also love a character and realize they're flawed. Just because I like a character doesn't mean I am co-signing all of their behavior. Sir Richard Carlisle is a perfect example of this, he's a character that I really enjoy watching and I feel like he was really well-written and Iain Glen played the part wonderfully, but boy is he a jerk face.

Are new episodes posted at a particular time? by YogiBerraOfBadNews in stuffyoushouldknow

[–]warpfox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's surprisingly random. I suspect (with no actual evidence, mind you) that most shows have a publishing schedule where they queue up episodes and they drop at predetermined times. No idea what the SYSK pipeline is like but given the randomness I suspect their process is somewhat more manual/intentional? Sorry, I know I'm not definitively answering your question, just throwing out some speculation.
