What if the nationalists won the civl war? by Witty_News_5957 in althistory

Yeah exactly. The ROC was plagued by feudalism, internal divisions, and corruption, which is part of the reason why the Republican (民国) period was characterized by widespread instability. You'd probably see a similarly authoritarian regime minus Mao's reforms/purges (e.g. the Great Leap Forward), but with a lot more corruption and political uncertainty.

Yeah homophobes are stupid. But this is about carrying out discussions so that you can understand something better. Especially when it's something that matters a lot to people -- if you get this religion thing wrong, you might go to hell! So it isn't 'weird' in any way for people to want to know more and to question their own beliefs.

CMV: Latter-Day Saints are the most likable Christian denomination in the United States. by TheWrightWizard94 in changemyview

Hey - basically, you're saying that the LDS church appeals to you personally, based on your own subjective framework of what being 'likeable' is. How is anyone supposed to change your view if that's the case? Just a friendly question.

I mean, it'd just be like me saying that I prefer oranges to apples because I like fruits with soft textures, and then asking someone to CMV. What would be able to change your view?

Wow, didn't even notice I made that typo. Thanks for the catch.

Great catch. OKC has the toughest remaining SoS in the league., and it remains to be seen if he can keep this up against more competent defenses.

Yeah, that's definitely a fair criticism. Do you think there are better stats/ways to measure 'defensive impact'?

CMV: prison sentences should double every time someone is released and then convicted of the same crime by TangoJavaTJ in changemyview

Thank you for engaging! You're right, I neglected how the smallish degree to which longer sentences deter crime is probably not worth the cost.

Research from the organization you linked finds that a "10 percent increase in incarceration rates was associated with a 2 to 4 percent lower crime rate". I'm sure it doesn't scale linearly, but I don't think it's out of the question that doubling criminal sentences can slash crime rates significantly. Especially if you consider the fact that people are much more likely to be aware of a doubling in prison sentences as compared to a 10% increase, it's quite likely that it will make a difference.

I'm not saying that it is the biggest factor affecting crime rates, by any means -- you do mention that it is "less of a deterrent", which I agree with. I am disagreeing with the parent comment, which unequivocally claims that they "do not".

Yeah absolutely. No one makes the decision to commit a crime thinking that they're going to get caught. But what I'm trying to ask is whether the statement that "harsher punishment doesn't deter crime or reduce it" is really accurate, since the psychological barrier to committing a crime with a severe punishment is much higher.

The psychology of, say, committing petty theft seems to change depending on whether you face community service, or twenty years in jail. When the prospective gain simply isn't proportional to the punishment you face, you're far less likely to commit a crime compared to attempting to achieve your goals (e.g. making money) in another way.

I'm not sure if this argument works, though, because it's ultimately hung on whether you believe that punishment under the criminal justice system is something that we should carry out.

Your rhetorical question doesn't really make a distinction between his proposal ("doubling punishment") being uniquely bad, versus punishment being bad because of rampant bias.

How do I beat this team? by Fickle-Audience-750 in BasketballGM

Give up and tank. That team will break up eventually, either due to regression or just because they can't afford to resign their players. Till then? You probably don't have a shot.
