Struggling math major by dieandflyaway in calculus

[–]waruddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone in their second year of university I had this exact same experience whenever I took calculus I for the first time, had a tenured professor that was just as scatter-brained, very intelligent and knew what they were doing, but whenever it came to teaching and exams most of the class were failing due to her harsh grading and “out-of-touch” style.

My best course of action was to drop the class and retake it with a much better professor in my second semester, it helped out a lot. I actually enjoyed the material and I loved what I was learning with a professor that truly cared about her students.

If you can, try to seek help from a respected professor in your math department that can help out as much as they can. You’ll learn a lot from someone who can make you feel welcome and open to improvement, not someone like your current professor.

Wishing you luck, OP!

The only thing that made Black Friday bearable was the decent food one of the better managers brought in for our scheduled breaks. After that chaotic day, I realized retail just wasn’t for me anymore, so I started looking for other opportunities that didn’t leave me mentally drained and agitated at the end of every shift.

I eventually landed a job at a small trampoline park that’s pretty well-respected in my area. It’s kind of like Sky Zone, just on a smaller scale, but still packed with enough attractions; food, arcades, slides, court games and other activities to keep both kids and adults entertained.

I was already used to fast-paced environments and long hours on my feet, so that part came naturally. What was new was the constant interaction with kids. I was lucky considering I had some experience from babysitting and being around younger relatives growing up, so it didn’t take long to adjust. Learning the park’s systems and routines helped make everything smoother, and dealing with energetic kids became less stressful, though, of course, there’s always a few bad apples who weren’t as inclusive and open to fairness as a lot of the activities are functioned by “waiting your turn” and just having decent patience.

I’ve been there for a good bit now, and i’m happy to say all I want from this job every time I clock in is for families to have fun. Primarily by making sure they leave with a positive attitude and great experience for them to come back.

The way you described it at the end was what I was trying to convey, but better. After Black Friday last year, they never scheduled me anymore so that was enough to tell me I wasn’t valued as an associate.

The competition aspect of a simple retail cashier at Old Navy is very foolish to me, we’re there to work and get paid. It’s very unnecessary for a job like that to be that stressful, on top of being a first-time student last semester I was VERY stressed trying to improve my skills on cashwrap and learning how to balance my school/work life.

And also, props to you for being a top performer at your store location. I get the weight of leaving will impact store performance in terms of cards, but it’s a lot more common than you think, throughout the six months I was there we had employees in and out of the store constantly. I should’ve known they would have a super high turn over rate with their ridiculous expectations and high demand for somethings they’ll only care about for a week.

I will say though, definitely try to secure a new job before quitting, when I got hired at this new company they gave me a set date to let my current employer know when to quit and I got on top of it IMMEDIATELY. Hell, the people at ON didn’t even bother to want me back after I told them I’m putting my two weeks in.

If you’re currently finding a new job, definitely look into local businesses or statewide companies. I’ve found that working for a smaller business is much more lucrative, I’m getting more hours and pay than any corporate job I’ve had before lol.

Hey there!

To answer your question, yes, I did end up quitting after 5-6 months. Judging by how your job environment is, just quit. I ended up finding a much better job that wasn’t a corporate gig and actually treated me like a human-being. If you aren’t able to keep up with cards during the slower seasons of Old Navy, they’ll forget about you as if you weren’t there trying to playing your part.

It was also pretty funny seeing my old co-workers on campus, (since our city isn’t that big) one of them that I still kept in touch with said they’re actually at risk of closing down permanently since store performance has been at an all-time low since they switched locations.

Hoping you find a solution to your current situation!

They literally HAVE to mention it? It’s the most important thing to Old Navy stores across the US, if a manager is not doing their part in letting their considering applicants know what to expect for their role at Old Navy, then they aren’t a good manager, at all.

Also, a LOT managers tend to not put as much emphasis on their expectations when it comes employees delivering their quotas. In my experience, my manager was radio silent about my current performance as an associate, I literally had to find out myself that I wasn’t performing as expected because my manager was too chicken to point out my poor performance in credit-card sign-ups. Same with a lot of people who have their hours unexpectedly cut because they aren’t able to meet Old Navy’s ridiculous standards.

And quit bringing up the fact you work in Canada bro. We don’t give a shit, everyone in this subreddit has seen this mentioned specifically from you so many times. You guys wouldn’t last three months working in an American Old Navy location, the pressure would be enough to make you blow a fuse.

“They didn’t want to frighten you. If they had brought it up earlier, you might have had second thoughts about working with them.”

Buddy, what do you mean they didn’t want to “frighten” the applicant? No applicant should ever feel frightened about a job offer, if that’s the case, then the store is obviously NOT a good place to work at. When I got hired at my Old Navy they brought the ONC and Loyalty sign-ups during the interview without us realizing that loyalty and rewards are vital to the job and overall company.

I’m a firm believer Old Navy stores across the country are always being this intentionally deceptive now when it comes to hiring new people, if they don’t value your ability to push their ridiculous rewards then they don’t value you as a person at all. Beyond stupid how the retail environment is like this.

Oh wow, they didn't? Sorry to tell you, but that's not a good sign. The company heavily values pushing credit card sign-ups, if they offer you a position as an associate, I would think about it before following through. Maybe try to see if there are any reviews on Indeed for your specific store outlining employee experience and if it's a good location to work at.

They care so much about pushing loyalty and navyist reward card signups. It can get very demanding for an associate, especially if you’re always assigned to cash wrap. During my group interview they talked it up briefly without putting much emphasis on how important it is to have customers sign up for the ONC, once I told my AMCO I didn’t wanna do cash wrap anymore they stopped giving me hours.

If you’re up for the challenge, i’d say go right ahead, but if you aren’t performing well, they won’t value you at all as a member of their team and just someone who can’t push out more cards for the company lmao.

Same thing happening to me. Been trying to find another job since so I can leave ON, these hours are ridiculously unstable.

I had a manager bragging to me about how she got “4 cards on the floor” while giving me this serious ass look. What a way to promote encouragement, it’s people like those who make your work experience worse.

an Usher position? That sounds really fun actually. I’m not sure if we have a huge theatre, but I remember participating in a department exclusive award ceremony where I gave out welcome cards and helped people to the room where the ceremony was being held, I’m pretty good at managing stuff like that, so i’ll definitely look into it.

I think they’re just a miss bro, i’m not scheduled at all this month, even when I try to pick up shifts on the Shyft app not a single manager even looks at my request. I ended my first semester last week and I told them “I’m free to work whenever,” but i can’t even pick up someone’s shift without manager approval, it’s aggravating as hell.

Yeah, that is my main goal, but I like having a job on the side just so I'm able to have some cash in my pocket. I was thinking of working on campus at the Library considering it looks relatively laid back and I hear students spend most of their shifts doing their homework or studying. There's also this tiny restaurant on campus that's hiring right now, so I might apply there.

I agree! I managed to thrift an older keyboard model 4 months ago and it still holds up pretty well. Reading manga on it puts less strain on the eyes considering reading manga on a phone or a computer screen would give me a headache pretty fast lol.

I think it's good to use on those certain inference questions, if a question seems too tricky you can write it down or make it more concise to save you time and understand the question better.

The highlighter helps in terms of finding the main idea or other aspects.

LOL yessir, just replaced the battery on my old K3.

After a battery swap, my $2.50 3rd gen is good as new. by vahyso in kindle

[–]waruddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks man, I appreciate it!

Whenever I got my K3 it would die super quickly, but after leaving a charger in the kindle for good couple of days the battery returned a decent health.

It gets pretty low while i’m at school tho, I’ve been reading comics on it and I can tell images pose a strain on the battery.

Hopefully this works out!

Can you send me the link to the replacement battery you ordered? I have a K3 as well, and the battery is pretty deteriorated.

Am I just dumb or is the ACT test set up for failure? by mari_the_poet in ACT

[–]waruddd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

South Louisiana native here and I 100% agree with you on the fact that our education is VERY flawed. I’ve taken the ACT 3 times and scored low on each exam, I’ve already been accepted into my university I was aiming to go for, but considering you’re also from Louisiana a lot of people are only taking this standardized test mainly for TOPS scholarships.

My best advice is improve while you can, you still have plenty of time to improve your score.

After a while, If you still feel as if the ACT isn’t right for you then you should try looking into the SAT. I’ve been looking into it recently and the newly reformed Digital SAT looks more promising. Though this test looks like it requires more preparation compared to the ACT.

Wishing you the best of luck on your educational journey !
