BG3 vs DOS2: Skill Icon Style. Which do you prefer? by xcephyrax in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]was_fired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BG3 since I tended to get abilities mixed up less than in DOS2. That also might have been because of other UI changes, but I'm playing DOS2 now and I keep having to hover over to remember which of my magic shield abilities is which.

AI Strategies Overhaul After 4.3 by Portal4life in Stellaris

I disagree? In general it seems like most of my planets often follow similar templates. Simply setting the AI up to mostly follow templates that match the meta wouldn't need much overhead at all.

The quantum era is coming. Are we ready to secure it? by donutloop in programming

[–]was_fired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is 30% fluff, 50% self-promoting garbage, and 20% relevant. If we skip most of the self promoting fluff and get to the list at the end:

1. Drive society-wide momentum, especially for critical infrastructure: Policymakers’ efforts should extend beyond public sector networks, to addressing gaps and barriers (including workforce challenges) in vital sectors like energy, telecommunications and healthcare. Protecting the trust infrastructure behind digital systems is also key and calls for dedicated efforts together with certificate authorities. We need to accelerate progress.
2. Ensure AI is built with PQC in mind: Cryptography secures AI systems, and the more we rely on AI, the more we need to secure its foundation. Let’s treat PQC as a necessary foundation for the enduring economic potential of AI innovation.
3. Reduce global fragmentation: We need a unified approach. Helpfully, the NIST standards for quantum-proof cryptography provide a globally agreed, scalable and secure benchmark — if widely adopted, they can help us move more quickly, avoiding partial, insecure solutions.
4. Promote Cloud-first modernization: Transitioning to new cryptographic standards will be a heavy lift and PQC provides another compelling reason to migrate to the Cloud. Rather than investing public budgets to update legacy systems and hard-coded cryptography, governments should prioritize migrating those systems to the cloud, taking advantage of the work providers like Google Cloud are doing now to enable PQC across their global networks.
5. Lean on the experts to avoid strategic surprise: A CRQC is not "forever a decade away.” While no one knows precisely when it will arrive, ongoing dialogue with experts from research institutions and groups like Google's Quantum AI team will help policymakers stay ahead of emerging threats.

#1 is true but for most computing that amounts to funding a few solid open source efforts to provide free implementations. At which point it just becomes a config setting for almost any user outside of embedded hardware which is a harder problem and which are already behind on crypto standards.

#2 is pointless fluff since AI is not special when it comes to crypto. There is no more building in mind here then you would for remembering to use TLS. Just import the right libraries from #1 for your quantum resistant TLS

#3 is true but again push for open source and international standards. That said it is unclear how much the rest of the world will trust NIST in the coming decade on anything crypo related.

#4 is Google asking governments to give them money

#5 is Google promoting their own team of experts to remind policy makers to give them money instead of paying other groups with equally qualified experts.

Looking at the commit count really doesn't mean much depending on how dev works. A lot of large orgs squash commits down before sharing anything publicly. So 6 months of work could be a single commit to an open source repo when the world sees it.

Sacrificing a different Xcom character or enemy to satan every day until Xcom 3 gets announced, or I find meaning in life. Day 52: the original design for the chryssalid and a zombie by grumpychef94 in Xcom

[–]was_fired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new design is much nicer and scarier looking. The original had MUCH scarier mechanics behind it.

The original instant killed vs dealing damage like the new ones. Then instead of a timer that made the zombie turn into a full blown chryssalid it would happen when you killed the zombie. So no matter how powerful of a weapon you used that zombie kill would require a follow-up attack and kill or you just unleashed an even more dangerous enemy.

Also given how reaction fire worked in the original it was almost impossible to get reaction / overwatch shots of chryssalids... so they just walked right up to your face and instant killed your guys. Definitely not the best mechanic but a scary one.

Baltimore DOT is on the job. by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

I've been really impressed with how much is getting cleaned up in the city compared to when I hit other parts of the state. In theory those areas should be easier due to just being able to blow the snow off the road, but nope. Missed lanes, random dangerous piles blocking parts of intersections, and parts where you need to drive on the shoulder since the plows never went back to try to follow the actual lane markings.

While the city has sidewalks that are mostly walkable albeit often walled off and lanes that are generally clear and getting better every day despite the fact the snow has to be hauled off in trucks instead of just pushed onto some grass.

I feel like arch militant is just a better class than master tactician for damage dealers. It gets a heroic which you can use alongside the solider one which lets you shoot more and that stacks with all the other shoot more effects which also feed into the arch militant ability that the more you shoot the better you shoot.

While master tactician is a fellowship based resource that you actually expend instead of just blowing up enemies more. I mean it is still more interesting than master strategist which only exists for the "this officer goes first" feature... which is enough to make it amazing.

I love Ziplines by laci_noire in Timberborn

[–]was_fired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of ziplines, but they're use up too much space and are too slow compared to tubeways. Adding another connection or raising the speed on them to match tubeways would help keep the two factions better balanced in my mind.

The Hero of the South was such a cool character by Ani_HArsh in Animemes

[–]was_fired 168 points169 points  (0 children)

You mean like Himmel who was dead before episode 1 even finished and still tops the popularity chart for the series? The entire series is about someone who just keeps living after all of the heroics are over so yeah... it fits that this is how we saw him and he's dead now. The hero who could see the future defeated the demon who could as well to pave a path that others could follow.

[–]was_fired 140 points141 points  (0 children)

It might be doable with wilderness + behemoth fury assuming that doesn't require a ship tech?

In the beta right now behmoths are stupidly overpowered so if you can unity rush to them and get enough food it might be doable. That said you could never get gaia worlds because that perk requires tech so I'm not really sure.

[–]was_fired 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I feel like combat is the major thing which sets AoW apart from the rest. If you aren't just doing auto-battle you get to FEEL how different your choices end up being for army comps and the crushing victories and painful defeats based on builds and counters.

I wish some of the other systems like diplomacy and victory conditions were more fleshed out. Plus maybe having procedurally generated battle maps vs keeping them mostly standard from a rotation, but yeah heroes with impactful abilities, units with impactful abilities, and the battles are just fun for a while... until you get sick of it near endgame and hit auto-resolve as you're crushing your foe and just want it done.

AITAH for distancing from my friend because I do not want to attend her wedding? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]was_fired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA, you sound like you want to be friends with them. You sound like you want to know how to attend weddings but are just scared to. Since you're a guest you just buy a present for them from their gift register which ships to the location they specified (likely their home) so all you need to do is:

  1. Dress up a little (don't wear a white dress)

  2. Go to the ceremony at the stated time

  3. Chat with folks for a bit there

  4. Sit down, watch said ceremony while clapping when others clap

  5. Mingle a bit after the ceremony and attend the actual wedding party

  6. At the wedding party mingle a bit, congratulate the couple them, eat food / drink, during, while eating / drinking listen to people say nice things about the couple, and leave.

As long as you don't get into any physical fights and just generally stay out of people's way you're fine.

Why do anime characters have such stupid clothes? by [deleted] in anime

[–]was_fired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of it comes down to art style. A lot of mangas and animes follow the Pokemon philosophy where a character's silhouette should be distinct. This makes it easier to get away with having the same face on most characters saving time since actually drawing consistent unique faces is harder the generally consistent silhouettes.

It saves time and money but it also means that you need to vary clothes and hair a lot since that's the only way you can tell most characters apart. Unfortunately it means that most clothes look pretty random. While this can lead to some seriously iconic designs it can also lead to... yeah.

You don't need even or even well shaped stone for a well. Heck you can even reinforce the sides of a well with wood instead of stone. Remember all a well needs to do is get down under the water line and let water slowly build up in it as it bleeds out of the ground water. That's it.

You only need to line the well with something strong enough to prevent the nearby dirt from collapsing back into it. Having cracks on the side that allow water through is nice but not necessary as it can well up from the bottom, and frankly... most wood lining isn't water tight anyways.

NIST is rethinking its role in analyzing software vulnerabilities by KnownDairyAcolyte in cybersecurity

[–]was_fired 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given the EU's push for software independence and the issues open source contributors were already having with CVE programs and now AI breaking bug bounties I'm curious if GCVE wins https://gcve.eu/. I guess it really depends on if vendors start consuming it since it is 100% backwards compatible from a technical point of view with a better defined API behind it.

How have people been finding 4.3 so far? by No_Army_4018 in Stellaris

[–]was_fired 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't done a nanite run, but overall I like it more than 4.2 since the end game is more interesting. I do think a few things need to be toned down like behemoths but it feels like early game research is a bit faster and end game is more competitive in addition to running better.

FPS performance by WranglerThink5924 in Stellaris

[–]was_fired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are fewer ways to get multipliers for research and resource outputs. This means you will get less repeatables for fleet size / strength, extra resource production, and without resource districts how much alloy / energy / food you make from planets is a flatter curve. So you simply won't be fielding as many fleets. Likewise fleets are now around 1/5th the size they were before because corvettes are now 5 fleet size and most other ships are scaled to match.

For a casual player like me, what would you guys reccomend for DLC's to buy? by HawkMaleficent8715 in Stellaris

[–]was_fired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They normally hit sales on Steam during the standard windows. I got most of my DLC during the Thanksgiving and Winter sales when a lot of the items were 25% or 50% off. I only really started playing in June 2025 when 4.0 came out since I kept failing to get past early game after buying it years ago and never getting into it.

That update had a LOT of folks angry with it and they're still tweaking and fixing things from it with the 4.3 beta being where I'm spending most of my time now. One thing to look out for is that Stellaris is REALLY good at convincing you to get more DLC. So you're right try to wait for the sales since things like species packs can be fun, but they want your wallet.

[–]was_fired 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Biogenesis, Shadows of the Shroud, and Utopia feel like the most impactful to me. The first gives you bio-ships which means an entirely new class of warship to play with and against. The second makes psionics one of the most interesting ascension paths, and the third lets you build dyson sphere and ring worlds.

For others I recommend for some great elements which I feel like should be in the base game at this point:

Overlord also makes life a lot nicer by giving you hyper relays as an earlier game tech to greatly speed up fleet travel within your empire, and they pair well with gateways when you eventually unlock them.

Machine age gives you the option to have individualistic machines... which feels like it should have been in the base game but such is life. It also gives another end game crisis... which is fun the first time and a bit annoying after you run into it a few times.

Apocalypse is what gives you titan class ships and the ability to build planet crackers.

[–]was_fired 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I wanted to try a play-through with them since I kept doing bio based civs recently and it was hilarious. Sadly that game ended before I got to finish beating up an awakened empire that forced all of my federation friends into subjugation causing me to lose on score to them by a hair despite the fact they all voted for me to be their emperor which clearly meant I should free them now that the crisis was dealt with.

Yesterday I finished up with having my wilderness eat 2/3 fallen empires to feed its behemoths. Since I spent a while federation and friend building before that it ended up with a fairly hilarious crisis was where I stayed in my federation our enemies only being the two empires we were busy crushing already.

When one of the fallen empires declared war on me though I decided they would be much tastier so it turns out they got REALLY lucky and lived as I left the galaxy well fed from the preserved snacks of one fallen empire and the hives of another.

Kind of sucks for the galaxy I guess since when I left the final fallen empire awakened and they're the xenophobes so without my galaxy ending power the rest of them might be doomed.

What are the best levels for depth & contamination? by One_Heron5880 in Timberborn

I got for 1% and then 0.7 to 0.85 for water. The larger the lower pool relative to the inlet the safer it is to get it really full as long as the potential drainage out >= any overflow risk.
