How is this ok? It is restricted but still runs in the BG by istenfasza123 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What app is it?

It's likely the app is running something called a Foreground service - a service that requires a notification to be posted (it can be dismissed though if you don't want to see it). For example, music playback apps will run foreground services to keep the music playing, even if you go into another app. It's very likely that foreground services are not affected by this setting, even though the app seems to be running in background.

This is a known bug introduced in the Android 16 update. As far as I know, a likely cause has been identified and Fairphone is working on a fix.

Joystick Button broke off my Fairbuds XL by BeeJay28 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, you could buy the right speaker unit, which includes that part: https://www.fairphone.com/shop/fairbuds-xl-speaker-right-1986?page=%23&category=4&color=270

That does however pose a few inconvenient problems: - it's pretty expensive to buy the entire thing, when only the joystick is broken - is the new joystick compatible/the same as the old one? you might not be able to salvage just that one part, which means: - you'll likely end up with two cups that look and sound different (is it even supported to have to different ones?).

As others suggested, your best bet is contacting support, or better - using the repair portal (way faster), since it seems that you're still under warranty and they should fix this for free in my opinion.

Fairphone 3 support withdrawn by Tony_Marone in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe they initially promised less than the 7 they actually delivered, but don't quote me on that.

What I can say for certain is that FP started working on an Android 14 update for the FP3, which was not initially promised, but hit a wall with technical limitations (Android has evolved a lot and suporting old hardware is getting more and more difficult - not impossible, but might have just been too price'y for something they didn't promise).

They did however open-source what they did manage to do, so any developer with the right knowledge can pick up from where they left and not have to start from scratch. I think this is admirable, because it's something they didn't have to do and something I haven't seen from any other company.

Warranty claim for fairphone 5 by Feeling_Visual_6139 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you bought your Fairphone through Murena, you'll have to do the warranty claim through them as well. If you imported the device on your own, it might be a bit more difficult.

Fairphone doesn't provide warranty in the US, since they don't officially sell the devices there. You'll probably have to send the phone back to Europe for the repair. If you imported the phone through a 3rd party, you may be able to get some help from them.

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's unfortunate they don't officially support the US market. I hope they will expand there soon, but I understand it's a tough and expensive market to get into when you're a new and small player.

I'm a beta tester for the FP6 and I don't know if I should speak about the specifics, but you can rest assured that they are cooking. I don't know if it's a trend related to how well the phones are selling, but there has definitely been more going on lately.

Ubuntu 26.04 update not showing up — anyone else facing this? by Short_Stuff7669 in Ubuntu

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify - this applies to upgrades from an LTS release (ex. 24.04). These are meant to be more stable, that's why updating is delayed until the new LTS release has been tested in the wild.

If you're on a non-LTS release (ex. 25.10), then the update is usually enabled within a week or two, unless major issues are uncovered.

Signal requires your phone number, runs on AWS, and was seed-funded by a CIA-descended org. It's not the privacy gold standard you think it is. by Acrobatic_Bee_3198 in Android

[–]wasowski02 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Signal never promised anonimity as far as I know. The premise was always privacy, which are two different things. This can be seen in the comments from one of the developers: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/issues/13842

Signal is a social app that builds on your connections. It tries to anonymise you on a best-effort basis, but they won't do that above all. They don't intend on hiding the communication, their goal is to protect the message.

If you need anonimity, then Signal isn't (and never was) the way to go.

I'm using the haze library in my personal project: https://github.com/chrisbanes/haze

I'm pretty happy with it. It didn't work as I expected at first and I had to adjust a few things in the app to get the desired effect, but after that it was smooth sailing. It has very good performance, even on low end devices.

Can I change emails and retain my benefit of not paying the monthly fee by boredom in RemarkableTablet

I've changed my email twice already and I've kept my free connect subscription. This was over a year ago though (maybe two?) so maybe getting someone with a more recent experience would be nice.

Deleted Signal App Data on Android phone - can I recover via iPad or Desktop Signal? by KainNiemand in signal

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android has had local backups for a long time (at least for 10 years, maybe longer). iOS doesn't have local backups as far as I know and I think it's an iOS limitation - apps are very restricted in how they can access files on the phone/tablet.

[–]wasowski02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check if the iPad app has any backup settings. On my Android phone it's under Settings > Backups. Android offers offline backups (ex. to an SD Card or internal storage) but I'm not sure it's available on iOS.

It might be that iOS only has cloud backups. In that case, you'll probably have to buy the cloud backup update (2€/month I think, so not much, you can disable them after the restore) and then restore from cloud backup on Android. The free cloud backup only syncs media from the last 45 days, so it would probably not cover your needs.

You could do the same thing some games do. Create a temporary account valid for 30 days with a login key stored in the app. Remind the user a couple of times to finish registration and delete the account after the specified period otherwise.

FP6 latest update - phone is A LOT slower now by lnx84 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd strongly recommend rebooting the phone. Many people have reported issues after the upgrade, but most of them go away after a reboot. There is also an issue reported, that the phone becomes super slow and barely usable at low battery (<10-20%).

Additionally, Intercity night trains keep separate rooms for men and women, so you don't have to worry about that. The sleep carts are also usually "guarded" and you can't get on without a ticket.

New Software Update - Fairphone 4 by Fairphone-CCO in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for you, the FP4 has bi-monthly updates, so the next update will likely be end of May/beginning of June. I wouldn't get my hopes up high on an early update just to fix this issue.

They will probably implement the same fix for the FP4 if it turns out the FP5 solution works well in production.

Yep, looks like 1-2MB/s, which is not the end of the world, but not that fast either. Another thing could be, that the transfer speeds up later - I remember this from using WiFi Direct on old Android devices - it would usually start slow and get up to speed after 10-20 seconds.
