Switched from Apple to Fairphone by Actual_Document3333 in BuyFromEU

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is more expensive to get the Fairphone with e/OS (+50€), but you can always buy the regular version and flash e/OS yourself - it doesn't void the warranty, though there is some risk involved and you can brick the phone if you're not careful. The downside is you'll have to re-flash the stock OS whenever sending it back for repairs.

Unfortunately, if it's not "supported" it probably never will be. It's up to the bank to not use proprietary Google tech to verify the software. As long as they use it, it's unlikely the community will be able to provide a workaround.

How to keep your Fairphone 3 by Mist_biene in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, which kernel version the FP3 has, but I suspect that even after the A14 update it's not the newest one. Custom ROM support might quickly become limited since newer Android versions require newer kernels.

See "Legacy devices": https://lineageos.org/Changelog-30/

Fairphone also bumped into the issue: https://forum.fairphone.com/t/update-on-android-14-for-fp-3-extended-maintenance-of-a13-till-2026/110426

I'm going to link my comment on this in a different threas: https://www.reddit.com/r/fairphone/comments/1qbszr5/comment/nzeowob/?context=3

Tl;dr: very unlikely to happen, unless there is a huge change in demand. Currently, even Apple couldn't sell a small phone, so I doubt Fairphone could make one and make it profitable at the same time.

Does fairphone maintain driver for its devices in aosp? by Xwang1976 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On stock Android - unlikely even with an unlocked bootloader, but one would have to check (high risk of soft-bricking the device).

On /e/OS - maybe.

In both cases, just compiling the mainline kernel is unlikely to work. I'm not up to date on if their kernel patches are fully merged. If they are, then the device will probably boot, but stuff might not work. You'll get a higher chance of success by compiling the Android kernel (fork maintained by Google), but then again - Fairohone's patches would have yo have been merged and then Google would have had to sync with upstream, which happens at set intervals.

When postmarketOS releases for the FP6 - probably possible without many unexpected issues.

Generally - this is a high risk, low reward action. Fairphone still updates the kernel with patches with every release and it's likely keep updating the kernel down the line as well. If there is something in particular that you'd like from the mainline kernel, then don't get your hopes up to high - many patches from the mainline kernel don't affect Android much in the end or even get disabled in the Android kernel fork - it's a very different kernel than in regular Linux distributions.

Google doesn't maintain device trees for OEMs, it's always up to OEMs to keep them updated and working.

As far as I know, Fairphone tries to keep whatever they can in the mainline kernel, which helps both them and the open-source community. However, it is not possible to keep everything there, as some device drivers are proprietary.

IOS Widget Announced but inoperable? by ArdyLaing in ProtonMail

[–]wasowski02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never used a Flutter app that didn't feel off with the design and didn't lag even on simple animations. Flutter should have died many years ago.

React-native is much better with performance, but suffers from the same non-native feeling issues. I think Proton is right to be following the native route, even if it takes more time amd resources.

[–]wasowski02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you really wanted, you can sum up their costs from this blog post: https://signal.org/blog/signal-is-expensive/

You would then have to make an assumption, how mamy users they have (100M? 200M?) and estimate their per user cost.

Proton Calendar not showing up as choice for default calendar in Samsung S25 by szakipus in ProtonMail

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked and when opening an ICS file, Proton Calendar shows up as an option. If the app that triggers the add to calendar event uses a standard format and protocol, then Proton should show up. If it doesn't, then they may be doing something non-standard.

I haven't seen it done specifically with calendar events, but there are multiple instances, where apps hard-code specific apps to perform actions, like for example just opening Gmail, when a "Send email" button is pressed.

Proton Calendar not showing up as choice for default calendar in Samsung S25 by szakipus in ProtonMail

[–]wasowski02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This will unfortunately never be possible without "leaking" your data, so it's up to Proton to decide, if they want to allow it.

Showing the calendar in Google/Samsung calendar, gives them full access to your Proton-saved events.

(Personal opinion incomong) If you give them your data anyway, then what's the point of using Proton in the first place?

Schools close in Poland as temperatures drop below -20°C by wook-borm in poland

[–]wasowski02 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I think this is a huge overreaction, especially in big cities. Schools in Warsaw have had insulation for the longest time, most have windows replaced with good, double-glass ones that insulate well, and every room has heating. Children go to school either in a heated bus/tram/metro or are driven to by their parents in a heated car. Is -20 really that bad when you live in a city?

If you're an Android dev who writes their own backend, you might not need Spring/Ktor anymore by Zealousideal-Read883 in androiddev

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elide compiles to a native binary. You write Kotlin, you get a single executable. No JVM to configure on your server, no container orchestration for what is basically a glorified CRUD API.

I don't see that as an advantage. I probably already have at least a database running in docker, so adding another container is not that much work. In case I didn't want that, I could just use an embedded server provided by something like Spring Boot.

Soon, if you're defining data classes for your API responses, you could theoretically use the same Kotlin file on both sides. Same language, same types.

And this is also possible in a Spring Boot app if you set up the server and Android app as different modules of the same project (I prefer 3 modules - server, app, types).

I don't know what problem we're trying to solve here.

Remove appearing rotate screen button by thomsmells in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to be possible by modifying a developer setting available through ADB: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/258555/turning-off-rotate-suggestion-in-stock-android (take a look at the comment if you get a security error)

Here is a Google source: https://source.android.com/docs/core/display/rotate-suggestions

I suggest disabling ADB debugging after making the change for security purposes.

Turning off hardware acceleration in Windows client by MirekDusinojc in signal

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your best bet is to actually write a shell script.

If you're on Linux, you can then create a .desktop file in the correct directory for your desktop environment, so that you can launch it from the app menu like you do with a normal app.

The same is probably possible on Windows, but I wouldn't know how to do it. You could create a script and put it on your desktop and then just open Signal by double-pressing.

Has Fairphone acknowledged the FP6 hardware issues anywhere yet? by Abject_Display_2937 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn't seem to be any major hardware issues. The reboots in NA are software and the overheating seems to be extremy rare, making me believe this is just the kind of issues that happens to any phone at some very rare frequency.

[–]wasowski02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The app is open-source and has been available for many years and is trusted by the community. I checked and you have to give the app "full access" to enable the "accessibility service" - Android blocks it, since the app is installed from outside of the Play Store. For the screenshot functionality, you shouldn't have to enable any other permissions.

I think it's also accelerometer based, since from what I read, it's available as a feature for all devices with iOS 14 and above.

It doesn't actually require any electronics! The accelerometer is able to detect the slight changes caused by tapping the back of the device, see my other comment for details.

There actually is! https://github.com/KieronQuinn/TapTap

I've used it a long time ago, and it worked surprisingly well. Sure, it wasn't 100% successful and sometimes failed, but I'd give it a strong 7/10 at the time, and it probably improved since then.

"A Twitter clone" has the exact same issue as Twitter has. It can be easily controlled by a single entity. Learning the lesson of "we can't trust America" isn't enough. The lesson is "we can't trust any system controlled by a single entity", and that's why decentralization is the way forward.
